Good Enough DEBUT RECORD FROM DAN VAPID FORMERLY OF SCREECHING WEASEL, RIVERDALES, THE METHADONES AND MORE! Wasting little time after the notorious SXSW incident, Dan Vapid re-teamed with former Methadones drummer and guitarist Mike Soucy and Mike Byrne, respectively, as well as ex- Screeching Weasel/Riverdales bassist Simon Lamb to form Dan Vapid and The Cheats. The 15 pop-punk tracks on the self-titled album turn out to be a pleasant amalgamation of all the aforemen- tioned bands. Tracks like "Just Like Cleopatra," "Beware of the Fog" and "It Lives By Night" would be right at home on a Riverdales record, while "Feeling Manic," "Die Trying," "What Do You Wanna Do Tonight?" and "In a Heartbeat" sound like they could have been cuts from a Methadones album. The delightfully gonzo "Devo on Speed" is a great, synth-infused tribute to new wave, but one of the band's best songs is also one of the most surprising: "Girl Group," a wonderful doo-wop throwback that sounds as if it could have been a jukebox hit from the mid-1950s. Vapid's affinity for writing solid, catchy tunes is FOR FANS OF: at the forefront of this record. Even though there are a lot of Screeching Weasel, Riverdales comparisons to previous bands, there is a unique sound Masked Intruder, Teenage Bottlerocket, Ramones, Pop-punk, Power-pop here that has a little something that those other bands didn't have. That sort of response from pop-punk fans is kinda a “no duh” to me, I knew this album kicked ass from the first time I heard the tape. It is gratifying to hear nice words none- theless. It’s quite a tremendous album when you get right down to it: awe- some songwriting, huge RAMONESy guitar riffs, and delightful deep har- monies akin to a very fine barbershop quartet.

Rather than spend this entire page offering up a wave of excuses and explanations—some lame, some valid—I’ll just refer anyone who cares to the Mutant Pop website: http://www.mutantpop.com, then click INTERVIEWS and select interview no. 10. That’s as complete a recita- tion of my discouragements and failings as anything.... I’m very sorry for any inconvenience that the “18 months of sloth” has caused. American Punk: The Relations between Punk Rock, Hardcore, and American Culture Gerfried Ambrosch ABSTRACT Punk culture has its roots on both sides of the Atlantic. Despite continuous cross-fertiliza- tion, the British and the American punk traditions exhibit distinct features. There are notable aesthetic and lyrical differences, for instance. The causes for these dissimilarities stem from the different cultural, social, and economic preconditions that gave rise to punk in these places in the mid-1970s. In the U. K., punk was mainly a movement of frustrated working-class youths who occupied London’s high-rise blocks and whose families’ livelihoods were threatened by a declin- ing economy and rising unemployment. Conversely, in America, punk emerged as a middle-class phenomenon and a reaction to feelings of social and cultural alienation in the context of suburban life. Even city slickers such as the Ramones, New York’s counterpart to London’s Sex Pistols and the United States’ first ‘official’ well-known punk rock group, made reference to the mythology of suburbia (not just as a place but as a state of mind, and an ideal, as well), advancing a subver- sive critique of American culture as a whole. Engaging critically with mainstream U.S. culture, American punk’s constitutive other, punk developed an alternative sense of Americanness. Since the mid-1970s, punk has produced a plethora of bands and sub-scenes all around the world. This phenomenon began almost simultaneously on both sides of the Atlantic—in London and in New York, to be precise—and has since spread to the most remote corners of the world.
