Coming off the celebration of its 25th Anniversary in 2009-10, the Colonial Athletic Association has built a reputation as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences both athletically and academically.

The CAA encompasses five of the nation’s nine largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Atlanta. The conference has produced 16 national team champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 12 national players of the year, 12 national coaches of the year and 12 Honda Award winners. Just as impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include The conference also excels in many other sports. Commissioner Thomas E. Yeager has guided the CAA since its inception. The conference traces its roots back to 1983 when three of its current members- George Mason University, James Madison University, and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new association. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, 1985.

Charter members George Mason, James Madison, UNC Wilmington and William and Mary were joined by Old Dominion University in 1991 and by Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. The conference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson University in 2001. Georgia State University and Northeastern University became members of the conference on July 1, 2005. 2010-11 Roster

the LPGA player government and served as a player representative to the LPGA Board of Directors as well as the President of the LPGA Tournament Division in 1985.

When she finished her LPGA career, Mant decided to devote her time and energy to a full- time teaching career. She has developed a strong following of students, many of whom have gone on to play collegiate golf at such universities as Stanford, the University of Southern California, Oregon, Arizona State, Tennessee, San Jose State, and Ohio State. Mant is a Class A member of both the LPGA Tour, the Teaching and CP Division, and currently serves on the United States Girls’ Junior Committee. Mant continues to teach at Eagle’s Landing Country Club, home of the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate. In 2002, Mant was named one of Golf For Women’s “Top 50 Teachers.”

One of Mant’s largest areas of focus is the short game, believing strong short play allows the Panthers to consistently compete at the top level. Mant regularly works with State’s golfers on firming old technique and introducing new short shots. She also devotes time to the mental aspects of the game and course management, a subject she feels most amateur golfers do not completely understand and often ignore in practice time.

Mant is also a member of the Golf Coaches Hall of Fame, an induction that came in 1989. In 1999, Mant co-authored “Golf Coaches Guide to Success,” a book designed to help high school golf coaches prepare members of their golf teams for the college golf experience.

Mant was born in Seattle, Wash., and grew up in Eugene, Ore. She is married to Rick Mant and has a daughter, Ashley (24), who recently married Georgia State alum Charlie Cash. Mant received her Bachelor of Science degree in marketing from Arizona State in 1972.

After over three months of rest and preparation in the offseason, Georgia State returned to the links the second weekend in February as the team com- peted in the Hurricane Invitational in Miami, Fla. Georgia State’s hopes of repeating looked promising as the squad led the 17-team field throughout the first two rounds. Unfortunately, the champion- ship title was just out of grasp as the team fell to second-place in the third round, missing out on the top spot by just one shot. ver the past 15 seasons, the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate has become the annual highlight of the Georgia OState women’s golf team’s schedule.

The John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate was first played in 1993 at Northwood Country Club, the home ofthe Panthers until 1999. The tournament was founded by Georgia State golf coach Kevin Propst and assistant Kirk McQueen with extensive help and support from Northwood County Club club pro John Kirk. When John Kirk passed away after a battle with cancer, his name was added to the Panther Intercollegiate to honor his assistance and commitment to the Georgia State women’s golf program.

After one year at Chateau Elan Golf Club in 2000, the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate moved to Eagle’s Landing Country Club in Stockbridge, Ga. The first iteration to be held at Eagle’s Landing, in 2001, saw the Panthers win the team title and Georgia State golfer Anna Moulin take home medalist honors. Both occasions marked firsts at Georgia State’s home tournament.

Entering 2011’s edition, Georgia State has posted three consecutive team victories at the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate and taken home back-to-back first place honors in indi- vidual competition. Senior Cathrine Madsen picked up medalist honors in last season’s tournament while Sandra Maier picked up her first career victory in 2009’s Panther Inter- collegiate, outlasting teammate Anna Scott by one stroke.

The 2010 John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate will take place at Eagle’s Landing Country Club March 21nd and 22nd. The 54-hole tour- nament is played on the par-72, 6,100-yard course.
