ROINN COSANTA. BUREAU OF MILITARY HISTORY, 1913-21. STATEMENT BY WITNESS. DOCUMENT NO. W.S. 1,234 Witness Jack Hennessy, Knockaneady Cottage, Ballineen, Co. Cork. Identity. Adjutant Ballineen Company Irish Vol's. Co. Cork; Section Leader Brigade Column. Subject. Irish Volunteers, Ballineen, Co. Cork, 1917-1921. Conditions, if any, Stipulated by Witness. Nil File No. S.2532 Form BSM2 STATEMENT BY JOHN HENNESSY, Ballineen, Co. Cork. I joined the Irish Volunteers at Kilmurry under Company Captain Patrick O'Leary in 1917. I remained with that company until 1918 when I moved to Ballineen, where I joined the local company under Company Captain Timothy Francis. Warren. Shortly after joining the company I was appointed Company Adjutant. During 1918 and the early days of 1919 the company was. being trained and in 1918 we had preparations made. to resist conscription. I attended meetings of the Battalion Council (Dunmanway Battalion) along with the Company Captain. The Battalion Council discussed the organisation and training in each company area. In May, 1919, the Ballineen Company destroyed Kenniegh R.I.C. barracks. which had been vacated by the garrison.. Orders were issued by the brigade through each battalion that the local R.I.C. garrison was to be boycotted by all persons in the area. This order applied to traders, who were requested to stop supplying the R.I.C. All the traders obeyed the order, with the exception of one firm, Alfred Cotters, Ballineen, who continued to supply the R.I.C. with bread. The whole family were anti-Irish and the R.I.C.

Liam Dromey Supervisors: Kieran Ruane John Justin Murphy Brian O’Rourke __________________________________________________________________________________ Abstract A Bridge Rehabilitation Strategy based on the Analysis of a Dataset of Bridge Inspections in Co. Cork. Ageing highway structures present a challenge throughout the developed world. The introduction of bridge management systems (BMS) allows bridge owners to assess the condition of their bridge stock and formulate bridge rehabilitation strategies under the constraints of limited budgets and resources. This research presents a decision-support system for bridge owners in the selection of the best strategy for bridge rehabilitation on a highway network. The basis of the research is an available dataset of 1,367 bridge inspection records for County Cork that has been prepared to the Eirspan BMS inspection standard and which includes bridge structure condition ratings and rehabilitation costs.

  • The Kilmichael Ambush - a Review of Background, Controversies and Effects
The Kilmichael Ambush - A Review of Background, Controversies and Effects (Seamus Fox – September 2005) On the cold wintry evening of Sunday 28th November 1920, two Crossley tenders, each with nine cadets of the Auxiliary Division of the RIC on board, were travelling from their base in Macroom towards Dunmanway when they were ambushed about 1.5 miles south of the village of Kilmichael, Co Cork by the Flying Column of the 3rd (West) Cork Brigade of the IRA, led by Column Commander Tom Barry. While a number of details remain unclear and many others are disputed, what is clear and undisputed is that by the end of the ambush, nineteen men lay dead. Sixteen of the dead were Auxiliaries and three were IRA men. (For the casualties and details of the personnel – both Auxiliary and IRA involved, see Appendix. Also given in the Appendix is the disposition of the ambushers – the disposition assumes importance when the controversies that arose from the Kilmichael ambush are discussed below.) This essay will look at (1) The background to the ambush (2) The controversies that arose from the ambush and (3) The effects of the ambush. 1.0 Background The Auxiliaries1 arrived in the town of Macroom in early September 1920 (Twohig 1994, pg 126). According to Hart, they arrived in a "district whose police chief declared it to be 'practically in a state of war'. … Almost all the outlying police barracks had been evacuated and burned down … The [British] army had stepped in in May [1920] to try to restore order and found itself embroiled in a vicious little war in the Muskerry hill country west of the town with the Ballyvourney I.R.A.

PhD Irish Studies 2013 - 2 - Acknowledgements My thanks to the University of Liverpool and, in particular, the Institute of Irish Studies for their support for this thesis and the funding which made this research possible. In particular, I would like to extend my thanks to my Primary Supervisor, Professor Marianne Elliott, for her immeasurable support, encouragement and guidance and to Dr Karyn Morrissey, Department of Geography, in her role as Second Supervisor. Her guidance and suggestions with regards to the overall framework and structure of the thesis have been invaluable. Particular thanks also to Dr Patrick Nugent who was my original supervisor. He has remained a friend and mentor and I am eternally grateful to him for the continuing enthusiasm he has shown towards my research. I am grateful to the British Association for Irish Studies who awarded a research scholarship to assist with research expenses. In addition, I would like to thank my Programme Leader at Liverpool John Moores University, Alistair Beere, who provided both research and financial support to ensure the timely completion of my thesis. My special thanks to Rev. Dr Tom Deenihan, Diocesan Secretary, for providing an invaluable letter of introduction in support of my research and to the many staff in parishes across the diocese for their help. I am also indebted to the people of Cork for their help, hospitality and time, all of which was given so freely and willingly. Particular thanks to Joe Creedon of Inchigeelagh and local archaeologist Tony Miller.
