His early race cars included an R type MG, a Riley and a pre war Alfa Romeo said to have been owned by Nuvolari. With this, he finished 5th in the Belgium Chimay Grand Prix; not bad for a car stuck in top gear!

These were to be the years of Fangio, Moss, Hawthorn when racing accidents so often meant death. During his varied career he also won the 1959 Le Mans with Carroll Shelby in the Aston Martin. He later suffered a serious high speed crash in Australia at Warwick Farm, requiring him to being flown to the UK for treatment. Later that year, he was back in action, but whilst driving a 3.8 Jaguar at Oulton Park, ended up in the lake. The rego number his Jaguar was BUY 1.

Although he competed in some major events until 1965, he returned to running his car dealership. He was tempted back to Formula One to manage the Cooper team in 1966 -1967. In later life, he lived in a Monte Carlo apartment, overlooking the Monaco GP start line.

The Club had seen a great expansion since its establishment in 1985, but subse- quently lost its profitable swap meet plus the generous patron, the late Howard Heard. Whilst the Club had a specific base, the old RSL, this required maintenance and management. Without the efforts of the team at that time, including the hall supervision and cleaning by Leith Illman, it is possible the club would have faltered. With Don’s wife Pam keen on craft, the Club became a major player in catering at various craft shows, in order to boost the club’s funds. Don had a rare and pretty 1929 Standard 9 two door coupe and a Ford Cortina. His other interest to which he contributed his time was in woodwork, being an active member of the Copper Coast Woodworking group. He would be seen regularly on the group’s stands around the YP. If the Traction Avant was looking old fashioned by 1955, then the DS19 soon saw Citroen with one of the most unique vehicles of the 20th century. The technology and the styling are still outstanding today. I remember driving a nearly new Safari and it’s novel floor brake button. Only a year ago, a lot of the supposed mystery of the car was clearly explained by NARC’s Brian Woodcock, when we visited his home. I can fully understand why he loves them. The revolutionary 2CV is another story best told by others and whilst I can see their appeal, I’d never want to pay big dollars for what was one of the cheapest cars on the market in its day. MAPS WILL BE PROVIDING FORMS FOR COMPLETION AS STATUTORY DECLARATIONS FOR CHRS. THESE MUST BE WITNESED BY SUTIABLE PERSONS. THE CLUB HAS TWO JP’S WHO ARE WILLING TO TAKE ON THIS ROLE WHEN REQUIRED. FOR FURTHE INFORAMTION AS REGARDS THE SCHEME, PLEASE SPEAK TO ONE OF THE CLUBS AUTHORISED PERSONS. PRESIDENT’S REPORT FOR THE 2012 AGM Farewell to the 2011-2012 MAPS year and we look forward to the forthcoming 2012-2013 program. To all of our longer term members, I hope the last eight years of my time as President has been as enjoyable for you, as it has been for me. To all our many members, both of long standing and relatively new, I hope you will continue to enjoy your time with the Club. My term as MAPS President has been sometimes been time consuming, sometimes a tad stressful, but on the whole, it has been a pleasure and a privilege to be part of our Club’s executive. The last twelve months has seen some changes within MAPS and the forthcoming year should see some decisions made that will benefit members and others in the community, whilst promoting our Club and ensuring our long term security. In the last year, I have continued to enjoy the excellent company of fellow members at a wide variety of events. To the Committee, I would like to express my thanks for their efforts. I would also like to thank the members for their support and encouragement throughout my term as President. Bring on the 2012-2013 MAPS year and along with me, enjoy safe and happy classic motoring. Dick Penhall SECRETARY’S REPORT FOR THE 2012 AGM Events wise we have held the regular eleven general meetings, with average of about 40 attending Other events- totaling 18 · Aug; Handover Lunch at the Yorke Valley (61), Bute Day- (36) · September; Old Car Day at Bethany. Cruising Classics Morning Tea at Kulpara and Lunch at Snowtown. 16 MAPS & 39 Guests · Oct; Edithburgh Gala Day (35), Pt. Augusta Campout weekend(40) · Nov; Christmas Lunch at Wallaroo (74) · Dec; Ardrossan Street Party (19) · Jan; Pt. Vincent New Year Gala Day. (11) Australia Day at Roseworthy (25) · Feb; Wauraltee Tea & Pt. Vic Picnic (65). Largs North QM2 BBQ with the CRCSA (13) · March; Around the Houses at Moonta (32), Maitland Show (30 with 20 vehicles). Coobowie Campout weekend (58) · April; Saltwater Classic( 2 Days- 30) · May; Wheels & Wings (42 + 38 guests from GVVCC) · June; Pt. Clinton 150th (20) & Pine Point BYO Lunch (16) Several of these has seen our relationships with other clubs flourish- e.g.; PADARC (Pt. Pirie), A7SA, Pt. Augusta VRC, NARC, CRCSA, Gawler VVCCC. In addition to these, a good cross section of members have entered a wide range of events such the Burra to Morgan event, B2B, All Chrysler Day, All British Day, The Two Bridges and Murray Bridge rallies, plus many more. Membership; A steady growth has continued through 2011-2012, as owners of eligible vehicles not only want to get on the conditional rego scheme, but also hear of our activities. Whilst our average age is relatively high, we do have younger people of working age now joining the club. We need to ensure that we have a program for those of younger ages and with families, as these are the people who have pressure from their wives and kids to do something else on Sundays. Lots of car clubs have lots of older members and face the same issue. At the same time, a good number of our more senior members have been loyal contributors and can still show us a thing or two. (Shirley & Don- the cheque’s in the post!) With about fifty people at a meeting or event, it’s hard to get around so as to talk to those who might be new or simply shy. For the newcomer, the old adage, “You only get one chance to make a first impression’’ rings true. I know one member who has taken the role of looking after new members as a task- thank you. The Year’s Highlights? It would be unfair to name specific events as so many have been first class and all have involved a good amount of input. To list any particular one would not be fair to people who made major contributions to others. Elsewhere, “the home coming” of the AJS to the family of an original owner is something I’ll remember a big positive for the Club. The Future? Whilst this report should deal with the matters arising in the last year, I hope that you will forgive me if I stray into areas besides the last twelve months, as I step down after a fair time in the role of Secretary. Since joining the Committee back in 2002, I am pleased to see the club go from strength to strength. Some of the numbers growth will be down to the need for those wishing to gain the Historic Rego, being obliged to be a member of a recognized club. However, I am sure that a greater number of new members have joined us because of the raised club profile and the events we now hold. I’d like to think that MAPS has well and truly shaken off any misconceived image of a club that does not venture far! I think one of our first campouts attracted three couples, the Osborne’s, Sewell’s and the Heinrich’s. A subsequent trip there saw over 40 members taking part and we now have two well supported campouts each year. As regards events other clubs, whilst we’ve not resumed the cricket matches with PADARC, we have certainly mixed with a wide range of clubs. We’ve hosted the Federation Peninsula Parade visitors and also two Cruising Classics days. It is my sincere hope that we will continue with such events and involvements.

Who can tell if the club’s growth will continue at the rate of the last decade? As regards the meeting venue, we should be OK for some years yet. We do have options in the event of very large meetings. Personally, I am somewhat hesitant to go along with ideas of a Club house, as the costs and upkeep could be a millstone around our neck. I want to be out in our old car at weekends, not on a working bee. If we cannot get people to stand up for club positions, I suspect we’d get even fewer for the caretaker’s jobs. I think we always need to ask ourselves as to what we can do better, both in the way of events and how we deal with members. My suggestions include · A “New Member Pack” · Look at breaking down roles, so as to get more people involved in running things · Attracting and retaining younger members with families · Ensuring that as we grow as club that we ensure we make members, both new and of longstanding feel welcome. · Consider having a club rep for the Federation meetings · Marketing our club memorabilia more readily · Collating more of the history of the club, as regards photographs etc., before they deteriorate. Thanks I would like to acknowledge the role of others in the club during my time as secretary. Working with Dick Penhall has provided plenty of laughs and his apparent relaxed attitude hides a wise approach to the many of problems that the club has faced. Having been the footy club president for many years has stood him in good stead. I also think the manner in which both Dick and Trevor Clerke have dealt with the CHRS admin of the club is something we all need to appreciate, especially as those jobs are going to get that much harder from now on. My thanks to the members who have expressed their support over the years for the work I have tried to put into the Club. However, I am mindful of the phrase that, “You can’t please all the people all of the time!” Finally, my thanks to my wife Mary for her support and words of wisdom over the years. For her, living with someone like me who always seems to have so many balls in the air at one time gets pretty stressful and the last year has not been easy for a number of reasons. Still, as the old song “ My Way” goes, “ Regrets, I’ve had a few, but too few to mention” Mike O

EDITOR’S REPORT FOR MAPS 2012 AGM

Whilst our costs for producing the newsletter during 2011-2012 have risen, I hope that this expense will be considered worthwhile, both as regards keeping in touch with current members, but acting as a tool to promote our club throughout the motoring scene. With the professional printing by Copyking, we have better quality hard copies and the folded format looks much more professional. Emailed versions provide a cheap way of circulating our newsletter to a wide audience and with our subs at a low figure, plus no premium for printed or posted copies, I think we offer a good deal. Copy wise, I am grateful to those who find the time to file reports or items, but in the absence of those, I hope the articles I produce are of interest. However, I have yet to publish the photograph of the 1971 TVR stand at London’s Earls Court Motor Show! My continued thanks to Jim Sewell as our labeler and post man for a great number of editions. TREASURERS REPORT MAPS CLUB SA INC 2012

We have had a good year, however we show a small loss because of increases in the printing and postage of the MAPS review, lunches and outings the committee gifted to the members . The club has purchased an amplifier, the updating of our Honour Boards plus engraving, and all the increases in general expenses. The raffle money covered hall hire costs and the tea & coffee donations purchased our supplies for our meetings and our outings. Any questions I now move that the 2011-2012 report be approved. Lyn Clerke I wish to let you all know that I will not be standing for re election at the next AGM July 2013
