O TRADUTOR Fernando Antônio Lucas Camargo ingressou no Movimento Escoteiro em 1983. Conquistou o Nível Avançado como Escotista (Ramo Pioneiro) em 1991, como Dirigente de Formação em 2007 e como Dirigente Institucional em 2012. Atua na Equipe Regional de Formação de Minas Gerais desde 1991, com direção e participação em cursos, elaboração e revisão de manuais de treinamento de recursos adultos. É graduado em Pedagogia (Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais), pós- graduado em Gestão de Recursos Humanos e Mestre em Educação. Credenciado no Exército Brasileiro como proficiente nos idiomas inglês e italiano. Habilitado pelo Exército Brasileiro como gestor de Comunicações militares, montanhista (11º Batalhão de Infantaria de Montanha) e Assessoria ao Comando e Estado-Maior (U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy). PREFÁCIO À EDIÇÃO BRASILEIRA Em uma tarde de janeiro, recebi, com grande alegria e honra, o inesperado convite para prefaciar a obra O Chefe: A Vida de Robert Baden- Powell, traduzida pelo grande amigo Fernando Antônio Lucas Camargo. Trata-se da primeira tradução para o português (Brasil), pelo que tenho conhecimento, da obra The Chief: the life story of Robert Baden- Powell, de Eileen Kirkpatrick Wade. Para todos os membros do Movimento Escoteiro, e também para seus admiradores, conhecer a vida de B-P, como carinhosamente é tratado pelos Escoteiros, tem um caráter especial. Durante muitos anos, em especial no Escotismo brasileiro, houve grande carência de literatura sobre a vida de B-P, sendo a sua autobiografia, Lições da Escola da Vida, publicada em uma versão resumida, apenas em 1991. Desta forma, ter acesso à presente obra, originalmente escrita por uma pessoa que conviveu com o Fundador do Escotismo, lança luz sobre aspectos até então pouco conhecidos sobre a vida de Baden-Powell. Não serão poucos os leitores que irão se surpreender com as suas aventuras e peripécias. Como tenho também por área de interesse a história do Movimento, a disponibilidade desse texto em língua pátria, por alguém que conhece história, a vida militar e o Escotismo, cria oportunidade para mais leitores compreenderem a personalidade e os feitos do Fundador. Fernando Camargo é pesquisador meticuloso e um exímio escritor, que, longe de apresentar uma tradução direta do livro publicado por Eileen Wade, lançou mão de extensa pesquisa, buscando compreender os fatos narrados por Wade também na visão de outros escritores. São inúmeras notas, que permitem ao leitor conhecer não apenas aspectos da vida de B-P, mas explorar os locais e entender as situações pelas quais passou. Historiador por vocação, Fernando Camargo nos presenteia com a tradução de O Chefe: A Vida de Robert Baden-Powell, que é um verdadeiro convite a todos os amantes do Escotismo, para conhecer um pouco mais sobre a vida do Fundador, que se confunde com a própria história do Movimento Escoteiro. Orlando Paixão Salgueiro Chefe IM – Região de Minas Gerais O CHEFE: A VIDA DE ROBERT BADEN-POWELL INTRODUÇÃO À VERSÃO BRASILEIRA Em minha vida Escoteira, li algumas obras de Baden-Powell e outras sobre ele. Obviamente, a primeira fonte para conhecer o Fundador do Movimento Escoteiro é sua autobiografia, Lições da escola da vida, cuja primeira edição brasileira (1991) foi, por motivos de custos editoriais, simplificada; quando li o texto original, percebi quantas passagens saborosas haviam sido cortadas. Já no século XXI, finalmente publicou-se uma edição integral em português brasileiro. Nesse ínterim, pude ler a biografia escrita por Tim Jeal, que, complementando a autobiografia, ajudou a desmitificar o Fundador. A obra do Chefe Boulanger, O Chapelão, trouxe outras perspectivas desse personagem que levou a vida como um “homem-garoto”. Ficou a curiosidade de conhecer o que outros, como William Hillcourt, Winston Churchill (Grandes homens do meu tempo) e Eileen Wade, disseram sobre “Lord Bathing-Towel”. Do mesmo modo que aconteceu com The left handshake e com The Scouts’ book of heroes, conheci esta obra ao garimpar na página The Dump, da Associação Escoteira do Canadá (www.thedump.scoutscan.com). Li-a, e constatei ser um ótimo complemento para Lições da escola da vida, ainda mais que a Sra. Wade obteve muito do que registrou nas próprias anotações pessoais de B-P. Baden-Powell não foi nem santo, nem super-herói. Foi um homem inteligente, perspicaz e versátil, espirituoso, e que soube lidar de forma criativa com as várias situações que se lhe depararam. Nasceu e viveu no apogeu do Império Britânico, educado na moral vitoriana. É importante ter isto em mente quando lemos que ele tinha servos na Índia, ou que os nativos tinham menor prioridade para as rações em Mafeking, ou ao ler suas considerações sobre sexo no Escotismo para rapazes ou no Caminho para o sucesso. É preciso considerar, ainda, que ele era militar; por conseguinte, apesar de ter aproveitado as oportunidades que teve para se divertir ou desenhar/pintar paisagens, sua vida não era um passeio. Seu trabalho era comandar homens – pela força legal e pelo exemplo – para manter a ordem no Império, mesmo que isso significasse matar outros ou arriscar-se a ser morto (na profissão militar, a morte é uma hipótese de trabalho). E, não obstante, B-P, graças à sua curiosidade e disposição para aprender, desenvolveu uma notável abertura de pensamento em questões como relações entre os povos e religiosidade. A Sra. Eileen Wade relatou que assumiu seu primeiro emprego em 1914, como taquígrafa e datilógrafa na sede da Associação Escoteira, acompanhando, assim, os primeiros anos do Movimento Escoteiro; dentro de um ano, estava casada com o Major A. G. Wade, então Secretário de Organização do Movimento e posteriormente Secretário de Gestão Conjunta. Veio a ser a secretária confidencial do Fundador e, com a morte deste, continuou a sê-lo para Lady Olave. Viu a família de Baden- Powell crescer e continuar, e viu sua “família expandida”, o Movimento Escoteiro, estruturar-se e fortalecer-se – de início, apoiado na carismática figura de B-P, e logo conquistando a institucionalização que o levaria a sobreviver, não apenas ao Fundador, mas também às duas grandes provas que foram as Guerras Mundiais. A Sra. Wade escreveu a biografia de B-P com o título The Piper of Pax1, publicada em 1924. Em 1957, publicou 27 years with Baden- Powell; escreveu, também, a biografia de Lady Olave. A edição revisada que ora se traduz, de 1975, agregou observações da Sra. Wade nos anos posteriores ao passamento de B-P. Verter uma obra de um idioma para outro não é o que se poderia chamar “brincadeira de criança”. Há expressões idiomáticas, jogos de palavras e trocadilhos que por vezes podem ser perdidos, ou ficar sem graça fora do seu contexto original. Além disso, há expressões típicas do final do século XIX e primeira metade do XX, que podem ser dificilmente 1 Jogo de palavras. Pipe pode ser gaita ou cachimbo. Um tocador de gaita-de-foles é um bagpiper. Um Peace pipe é o “cachimbo da paz”. O flautista de Hamelin, em inglês, é um piper, tocador de gaita. Assim, B-P seria um flautista de Hamelin da paz (pax, em latim), novamente num jogo de palavras com Pax Hill, sua última residência na Inglaterra. traduzíveis; pode haver, ainda, expressões que expressem uma visão de mundo que hoje poderia ser considerada “incorreta”, mas que à época era considerada “normal”. O trabalho de tradução, ou versão para outro idioma, necessita mais que substituir uma palavra por outra: é preciso entender toda a mensagem, o “espírito” de uma frase, ou até de um parágrafo inteiro, para, então, expor essa ideia no nosso vernáculo. Fez- se a adaptação na medida do possível e, quando preciso, adicionaram-se notas explicativas – especialmente para contextualizar alguns dos episódios vividos pelos personagens, ou para esclarecer alguma situação caracteristicamente militar ou peculiar ao período. Como muitas vezes acontece a quem alcança notoriedade, B-P e o Movimento que criou são alvos tanto de enaltecimento quanto de ataques. B-P mesmo dizia, quanto à espiritualidade, que, pelas manifestações dos observadores, acreditava ter alcançado a justa medida, pois uns diziam que o Escotismo tinha religião de menos, e outros, que tinha religião demais..

In these contexts, Guiding embraced not only twentieth century youth citizenship training schemes, but also the colonial project of making First Nations and Inuit people good citizens. But ironically, while the Guide programme endeavoured to produce moral, disciplined and patriotic girls who would be prepared to undertake home and civic responsibilities as dutiful mothers and wives, it also encouraged girls to study and imitate 'wild' Indians. This thesis will explore the ways in which Girl Guides prepared girls for citizenship, arguing that the Indian, who signified to Guides authentic adventure, primitive skills and civic duty, was a model for their training. 'Playing Indian' enabled Guides to access these 'authentic' Indian virtues. It also enabled them to deny their roles as proponents of colonialism.     Summary of Sexual Abuse Claims in Chapter 11 Cases of Boy Scouts of America There are approximately 101,135sexual abuse claims filed. Of those claims, the Tort Claimants’ Committee estimates that there are approximately 83,807 unique claims if the amended and superseded and multiple claims filed on account of the same survivor are removed. The summary of sexual abuse claims below uses the set of 83,807 of claim for purposes of claims summary below.1 The Tort Claimants’ Committee has broken down the sexual abuse claims in various categories for the purpose of disclosing where and when the sexual abuse claims arose and the identity of certain of the parties that are implicated in the alleged sexual abuse. Attached hereto as Exhibit 1 is a chart that shows the sexual abuse claims broken down by the year in which they first arose. Please note that there approximately 10,500 claims did not provide a date for when the sexual abuse occurred. As a result, those claims have not been assigned a year in which the abuse first arose. Attached hereto as Exhibit 2 is a chart that shows the claims broken down by the state or jurisdiction in which they arose. Please note there are approximately 7,186 claims that did not provide a location of abuse. Those claims are reflected by YY or ZZ in the codes used to identify the applicable state or jurisdiction. It is interesting when one considers “club” publications and their timing, etc. Like most people I am a member of several clubs including, amongst others, The Great Eastern Railway Society. This is an historical society which studies the railway which built the network throughout East Anglia here in the UK. I was instrumental in founding the Society back in 1973 and it has always been one of my interests. The Society publish two magazines, both on a quarterly basis - on alternate quarters throughout the year. The people there don’t seem to get so hung up on the dates of publication because I have just received the January, 2010 issue of their Journal. I mentioned the forthcoming World Jamboree in the last issue and our attempts to share a base / stand with the International Badgers Club. We have now finally heard from one of the organisers, who has been given responsibility for an Historic Exhibition at the event, saying that we are welcome to assist but we must become members of our National Contingent for IST and apply through that. Needless to say the UK has long since selected their Contingents so we have had to reluctantly decline the invitation - but have offered assistance if there is anything particular which is needed. I will end this editorial with thanks for the small supply of new articles and a request for more.
