Dear Customer, Welcome to our special double-catalogue edition for the Autumn! Along with this usual monthly listing (prices valid until 28 November with the exception of the Warner boxset offer), you will also find a 16pp catalogue devoted to DVDs and Blu-rays, which will remain valid until we close for Christmas. There are in fact around 2,500 DVD and Blu-ray titles reduced altogether, but you will appreciate that we don’t quite have enough room for them all inside 16 pages. The complete listing can be found on our website, or alternatively you are welcome to apply 20% discount to any of the labels detailed in the front of the separate Autumn DVD and Blu-ray Sale listing. We have chosen a title from Signum as our Disc of the Month for October. You may have heard that Signum recently won Gramophone’s coveted Label of the Year Award for 2017 and, aside from any titles released in October, we are pleased to be able to offer a discount of 30% on any of their titles until the end of October. There seems to be a plethora of new releases from high-profile singers this month: Rolando Villazon and Ildar Abdrazakov duet on DG; Jonas Kaufmann, Christian Gerhaher and Juan Diego Florez all present solo recitals on Sony; Philippe Jaroussky, Marianne Crebassa and Angela Gheorghiu appear separately on Warner/Erato; and Barbara Hannigan offers us a stunning programme of Berio, Berg and Gershwin on Alpha (‘Crazy Girl Crazy’ - not to be missed!). Great value boxsets continue to afford record labels the opportunity to dig into their rich archives - this month sees collections of recordings from The Amadeus Quartet (DG), Paul Badura-Skoda (turning 90 in October, see both DG and Sony/RCA), Murray Perahia (Sony), Mady Mesple (Warner), Christian Ferras (Warner) and Regine Crespin (Warner). Benefitting from the jet aeroplane and the record industry’s ability to reach out to the world, they dominated chamber music making for nearly 40 years. But concert tours are only successful if reviews are ecstatic and audiences delighted: they both were. The Quartet (who styled themselves ‘The Wolf-Gang’) roved the world, argued, celebrated and worked like no other group, and changed not a single member: Norbert Brainin, Siegmund Nissel, Peter Schidlof and Martin Lovett had a recording career from 1951 to 1987, ending only with the death of Peter Schidlof in 1987. These 70 CDs – presenting almost their entire discography, together with distinguished and extensive presentation – form one of the most extensive chamber music sets ever created, and stand as eloquent testimony to their thoughtful musicianship, technical calibre and to the immense esteem in which the world held them. Known both as inventive producer and as piano player, Rosetta Cucchi has established herself as one of the most innovative Italian opera directors of his generation. In contrast to scholars who situate popular genres outside of political thinking, or conversely read the “messages” of popular and especially children’s literatures homogeneously as ideology, I argue that BD adventures, including Westerns, engaged openly and variously with contemporary geopolitical conflicts. Chapter 1 relates the early popularity of wilderness and desert stories in both the United States and France to shared histories and myths of territorial expansion, colonization, and settlement.

    BIOGRAPHY THE BROOK STREET BAND takes its name from the London street where composer George Frideric Handel lived from 1723-1759. The Band was formed in 1996 by baroque cellist Tatty Theo and rapidly CONWAY established itself as one of the UK’s leading Handel specialists, winning grants, awards and broadcasting opportunities from various organisations including BBC Radio 3 and the Handel Institute. Eighteenth HALL century chamber repertoire has always been the Band’s driving passion, focussing particularly on SUNDAY Handel’s music. However, in recent years the Band’s activities have also expanded to include regular collaborations with conductors, choirs and venues on larger-scale Handel vocal works. It is currently CONCERTS involved in several long-term projects with the London venue St. John’s Smith Square, exploring Handel’s chamber repertoire and performing Handel’s oratorios. The Brook Street Band regularly broadcasts for BBC Radio 3 and its extensive discography for AVIE has Patrons - Stephen Hough, Prunella Scales CBE, Roderick Swanston, been singled out to critical acclaim; the Band’s debut CD “Handel Oxford Water Music” was selected as Gramophone Magazine Editor’s Choice, as was its “JS Bach Trio Sonatas”. Of The Band’s most recent Hiro Takenouchi and Timothy West CBE recordings, BBC Radio 3 Record Review had this to say about “Handel Trio Sonatas Opus 2”: “ These are Artistic Director - Simon Callaghan grown-up performances from The Brook Street Band. Finely balanced, deliciously spiced, infectiously musical!”. Early Music Today wrote “an impressive recording and some infectious music-making from two performers who clearly take great pleasure in playing together” about “JS and CPE Bach Sonatas for Viola da Gamba (Cello) and Harpsichord.
