Dear Customer, Welcome to another bumper catalogue! It never ceases to amaze us how quickly our monthly publications get filled, especially when classical music was supposed to be ‘dead’ many years ago. New releases continue to number in their hundreds every month, and it is certainly not difficult to find superb back-catalogues to promote and explore. Our ‘Disc of the Month’ is as good a place as any to start for our new release highlights: Stephen Hough’s recitals for Hyperion never fail to ignite a spark of interest, and his latest compendium features a delightful selection of both romantic and light piano repertoire, many arranged by Hough himself. We have been thoroughly enjoying it in recent days, making it a clear choice for our pick in June - please find more information below. Another pianist we think deserves some attention this month is Kevin Kenner, who has recorded a brand new album of Chopin’s late works for Warner Classics. Kenner has long been associated with Chopin and his interpretations have been compared in the past to the likes of Rubinstein, Michelangeli and Lipatti, so it is pleasing to see him now receiving some long-overdue exposure on a major label in the UK. Other highlights this month include: two new discs of British music on Chandos in the shape of Elgar from Edward Gardner (Symphony no.2, Serenade for Strings) and Vaughan Williams from Peter Oundjian (Piano Concerto, Oboe Concerto and more); the latest Wagner (Das Rheingold) from Elder and the Halle, issued on their own label; and a particularly strong batch of releases from Harmonia Mundi to be found on p.6, including performances from Isabelle Faust, Jean-Guihen Queyras and the Cuarteto Casals. Harmonia Mundi also re-issue a further ten titles in their mid-price ‘HM Gold’ series, all top-notch performances at excellent value. See inside for plenty more, including the usual selection of new boxsets (the Gounod Edition from Warner looks like it might be worth spending a bit of time with…). We have the complete catalogues of Alpha, Simax and Lyrita reduced this month, all labels very worthy of exploration. You will also see a list of titles we can currently obtain from the Unicorn back catalogue, temporarily at special prices. Other offers include bargain boxsets from Sony, DVDs and Blu-rays from Dynamic, the Historical series from Naxos, and a wide range of titles from DG & Decca, including DVDs and a wonderful range of single CDs available in a multibuy offer. Offer available while stocks last. On this album, transcriptions (fourteen of them) transform, taking on new costumes and identities. The Austrian hero Radetzky turns his march into a waltz; that Australian legend Matilda exchanges her waltzing for a rhumba. For Liszt evenings have harmonies; for Sibelius a Finnish spruce tree inspires a melody of heartbreaking wistfulness. Then Mompou’s slender masterpiece which closes the recital (from his suite Scènes d’enfants) takes me back to my own childhood. The first record we bought when I started to learn the piano was a mixed album, much like this one, on which Clive Lythgoe played this little gem. Thus I knew Mompou before I knew Mozart, and this piece has been my companion as an encore for over forty years of concerts now. I’ve never found another which could surpass its gentle charm. It was one of the first pieces I learned with my infant fingers and I hope it will be the last piece I play when my own career (was it all a dream?) finally comes to a close. 2 PRIORITY NEW RELEASES DG and Decca The Golden Age Bach, JS Violin works and arrs by Violin Concertos 1 & 2, Bruch, Kreisler, Heifetz, Solo Partita no.2 Gershwin etc Lozakovich, Bavarian Radio Chen, LPO, Trevino Symphony Orchestra £11.50 £11.50 483 3852 479 9372 Kubelik Complete Recordings on Deutsche Grammophon £119.95 479 9959 (64CD + 2DVD) The entirety of Rafael Kubelík's recordings for the Yellow Label, united for the first time in one edition. Prominent in his time, and admired by such figures as Bizet, Fauré, Massenet, Ravel and Tchaikovsky, this is the most comprehensive boxset dedicated to Gounod ever released. It includes three operas: his masterpiece Faust in the historic version by Georges Prêtre and Plácido Domingo, a highlights version sung in German by Gedda, Moser and Moll, and Roméo et Juliette and Mireille by the French conductor Michel Plasson and Alfredo Kraus (1st) and Mirella Freni (2nd). They are partnered by other opera arias, a great selection of 26 songs, three sacred works including the well-known Messe solennelle de Sainte Cécile and the only version available of Mors et Vita.
