Bradshaw, Advisor The purpose of this dissertation is to analyze the dominant ideologies and hegemonic social constructs the television series Friends communicates in regard to friendship practices, gender roles, racial representations, and social class in order to suggest relationships between the series and social patterns in the broader culture. This dissertation describes the importance of studying television content and its relationship to media culture and social influence. The analysis included a quantitative content analysis of friendship maintenance, and a qualitative textual analysis of alternative families, gender, race, and class representations. The analysis found the characters displayed actions of selectivity, only accepting a small group of friends in their social circle based on friendship, gender, race, and social class distinctions as the six characters formed a culture that no one else was allowed to enter. iv ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This project stems from countless years of watching and appreciating television. When I was in college, a good friend told me about a series that featured six young people who discussed their lives over countless cups of coffee. Even though the series was in its seventh year at the time, I did not start to watch the show until that season. -

Summary: Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge was a composer, pianist, and patron of music. In 1925, she created the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation at the Library of Congress in support of chamber music. The collection contains Coolidge's correspondence to and from many of the prominent musical artists of the first half of the twentieth century. Extensive correspondence between Coolidge and Library of Congress librarians and administrators is also included. The remaining materials in the collection, including photographs, scrapbooks, business papers, programs, publicity materials, iconography, realia, and clippings, are available for research and will be incorporated into the finding aid at a later date. Music manuscripts of works commissioned by Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge or the Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge Foundation in the Library of Congress comprise a substantial portion of the collection and are cataloged individually. Cypress String Quartet American Album Notes by Richard Aldag A fusion of divergent cultural influences has created a rich palette from which American composers may draw. From the ritual music of Native Americans, to African American slave songs and spirituals, New England shape note singing, and varied European, Latin American, and Asian musical traditions, indelible influences abound in American classical music. With the expansion of the nation from coast to coast accomplished and the horrors of the Civil War behind them, American composers found their voices – as individuals and as a collective group – toward the turn of the 20 th century. Along the way, the string quartet emerged as a vital resource for artistic expression. The collection on this CD represents one viewpoint of the journey that American classical music has taken from the late-19th century to the early 21 st century, through the lens of the string quartet. The influences and stylistic differences may vary, but the music is timeless and American. The Call The journey begins with the Bohemian composer Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904), whose String Quartet in F, Op. 96 “American,” is universally acknowledged as the first great string quartet composed in the United States. As a proponent of the European nationalist movement of the second half of the 19 th century, Dvořák had created a substantial body of music inspired by the rhythms and folk tunes of his homeland. In 1891, Dvořák was recruited to serve as Director of the National Conservatory of Music, an institution that had been founded by the prominent New York socialite and philanthropist Jeanette Thurber. -

Cambridge University Press 978-1-107-09365-2 - Mozart’s Music of Friends: Social Interplay in the Chamber Works Edward Klorman Frontmatter More information Mozart’s Music of Friends In 1829 Goethe famously described the string quartet as “aconver- sation among four intelligent people.” Inspired by this metaphor, Edward Klorman’s study draws on a wide variety of documentary and iconographic sources to explore Mozart’s chamber works as “the music of friends.” Illuminating the meanings and historical foundations of comparisons between chamber music and social interplay, Klorman infuses the analysis of sonata form and phrase rhythm with a performer’s sensibility. He develops a new analytical method called multiple agency that interprets the various players within an ensemble as participants in stylized social intercourse – characters capable of surprising, seducing, outwitting, and even deceiving one another musically. This book is accompanied by online resources that include original recordings performed by the author and other musicians, as well as video analyses that invite the reader to experience the interplay in time, as if from within the ensemble. edward klorman is Assistant Professor of Music Theory and Viola at Queens College and The Graduate Center, City University of New York (CUNY). He also teaches graduate analysis seminars and chamber music performance at The Juilliard School, where he was founding chair of the Music Theory and Analysis department. Committed to intersections between musical scholarship and per- formance, he currently serves as co-chair of the Performance and Analysis Interest Group of the Society for Music Theory. He has performed as guest artist with the Borromeo, Orion, and Ying Quar- tets and the Lysander Trio, and he is featured on two albums of chamber music from Albany Records. -

ALEXEI VOLODIN, Piano Acclaimed for his highly sensitive touch and technical brilliance, Alexei Volodin is in demand by orchestras at the highest level. He possesses an extraordinarily diverse repertoire, from Beethoven and Brahms through Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev and Scriabin to Gershwin, Shchedrin and Medtner. Highlights of the 2019/20 season include concerts with Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, Philharmonisches Staatsorchester Hamburg, Royal Philharmonic and St Petersburg Philharmonic orchestras, and Sinfonica di Milano Giuseppe Verdi, working with conductors Valery Gergiev, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Kent Nagano, Pietari Inkinen and Robert Trevino. He will also appear with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra for a special project performing a cycle of Beethoven Concertos and the Choral Fantasy. Previous seasons have included performances with Orchestre symphonique de Montréal, The Mariinsky Orchestra, Antwerp, BBC and NHK symphony orchestras and NCPA Orchestra China, as well as tours with SWR Symphonieorchester, Russian National Orchestra and Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra. Volodin regularly appears in recital and has performed in venues including Wiener Konzerthaus, Barcelona’s Palau de la Música, Mariinsky Theatre, Paris’ Philharmonie, Alte Oper Frankfurt, Tonhalle Zürich and Madrid’s Auditorio Nacional de Música. This season he appears in the International Piano Series at the Southbank Centre, Wigmore Hall and the Meesterpianisten Series at the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, as well as recitals in Bratislava, Ostrava, Den Haag, Oxford and Winnipeg. An active chamber musician, he has a long-standing collaboration with the Borodin Quartet. In 19/20, they will be joined by trumpeter Sergei Nakariakov for performances at the Southbank Centre and Istanbul Music Festival. -
