In 1995 and 1996, MTDC produced another training video “Making a Crew” (MTDC Staff 1995 and 1996). This video focused on the workers, not the supervisors. While interviewing Forest Service employees during the production of this program, the project leader noted that numerous changes had occurred in the Forest Service’s work culture. This insight led to the white paper, “A Changing Forest Service Work Culture: Training New Leaders” (MTDC Staff 1997). The white paper had two purposes: to present some of the changes taking place in the Forest Service’s work culture and to discuss some sociological reflections on the training of Forest Service crew leaders. The paper concluded by recommending that the training program for supervisors of field crews be updated. A project to update the supervisor training program began in January 2000. The project team found that traditional seasonal crews had become almost extinct in the Forest Service.

Hayes 2009 PREFACE When the University of Wyoming began collecting the papers of national entertainment figures in the 1970s, it was one of only a handful of repositories actively engaged in the field. Business and industry, science, family history, even print literature were all recognized as legitimate fields of study while prejudice remained against mere entertainment as a source of scholarship. There are two arguments to be made against this narrow vision. In the first place, entertainment is very much an industry. It employs thousands. It requires vast capital expenditure, and it lives or dies on profit. In the second place, popular culture is more universal than any other field. Each individual’s experience is unique, but one common thread running throughout humanity is the desire to be taken out of ourselves, to share with our neighbors some story of humor or adventure. This is the basis for entertainment. The Entertainment Industry collections at the American Heritage Center focus on the twentieth century. During the twentieth century, entertainment in the United States changed radically due to advances in communications technology. The development of radio made it possible for the first time for people on both coasts to listen to a performance simultaneously. The delivery of entertainment thus became immensely cheaper and, at the same time, the fame of individual performers grew.

That stage later became Studio E at ABC, (now Stage 5). Eventually, the auditorium end of the stage was demolished to make way for a new studio now called Stage 4. The Vitaphone stage was sort of like the Phantom stage at Universal in that a portion of it had a permanent auditorium set with seats and boxes. It was removed once ABC took over. Grape Nuts in the bowl, milk, sugar, into the fridge to soften up for a while. I plop onto the couch and turn the TV on and it’s 7am, on the button. Cartoons. I watched ‘em every weekend, without fail. I was an ABC kid mostly. They had the best cartoons – Superfriends, Scooby Doo, Plastic Man, Star Wars: Droids, Star Wars: Ewoks, Monchichis. Yeah, CBS had Muppet Babies, and NBC had both Gummy Bears and Alf Tales, ABC was my go-to for cartoons on Saturday mornings. And now, they’re gone. There are a lot of reasons. Educational groups viewing them as strictly marketing for toys and not at all what we should be pre- senting to children. They have a point about the toys, but there’s way more to it. News also took up a bigger chunk, forcing the networks to compete with CNN and Fox News meant that they had to up the number of hours they could dedicate, and thus they ate into Satur- day Mornings.
