Lubbock Comprehensive Plan Introduction
Population and Economics 2004 Update Report Lubbock Comprehensive Plan Introduction The Population and Economics Report is an element of the Lubbock Comprehensive Plan. The purpose of this report is to evaluate the structure of the economy and demography of Lubbock and produce projections for population, land use and economic development. The Population and Economics Report should be evaluated on a timely basis to reflect changes in the economy and demography of Lubbock. The Population and Economics report is used by businesses, governmental agencies, churches, students, and civic organizations to determine needs and develop strategies to meet those needs. To better serve users of this report a greater emphasis is on the graphic presentation of statistical data. The Population and Economics Report is divided into sections on the economy, population and goals. Evaluation of the economic structure is fundamental to the population analysis because economic and human resources are the foundation of any community. Goals reflect the desires of the citizens to increase economic opportunity and improve the quality of life for their community and to focus the available resources to achieve these goals. Most chapters in the report are subdivided into Historic, Existing and Outlook sections to illustrate the evolution of the specific topics. To accommodate the increased interest in water usage and planning, projections are made to the year 2050 for the City of Lubbock and the Retail Trade area. It should be noted that while the Planning Department of the City of Lubbock is responsible for this report and great care has been used in the assembly and review of this document, accuracy is limited by the reliability of the current Land Use Data File and the accuracy of data obtained from other sources. -

Gale Henry Also Known As: "The Elongated Comedienne" Lived: April 15, 1893 - June 6, 1972 Worked as: film actress, producer, scenario writer, theatre actress Worked In: United States by Steve Massa Thought to be the prototype for Popeye’s girlfriend Olive Oyl, Gale Henry was tall and extremely skinny, with large eyes and a sharp nose. Known as “The Elongated Comedienne,” from 1914 to 1933 she entertained audiences with eccentric physical comedy. Like her contemporaries Alice Howell, Mabel Normand, Marie Dressler, and Louise Fazenda, Gale took many bumps and bruises in the name of laughter alongside her male comedian counterparts in an estimated two hundred fifty-eight shorts and features, some of the craziest of which she wrote. Her active female characters bear comparison with Pearl White and Helen Holmes, the “serial queens” of the 1910s, and she often spoofed the cliff-hanger genre in which they appeared. Henry’s performing style could be very broad, but she also had a gift for small, insightful gestures that could bring a moment of pathos and feeling into the knockabout. She often played put-upon slavies, but her unconventional looks also made her perfect as a lovelorn spinster, an overbearing wife, or a burlesque country girl. She wore a wide-brimmed hat, a tight, old-fashioned button-up blouse, a long plaid or checkered skirt, and clunky high-top shoes. The overall look had a feel of L. Frank Baum’s Scarecrow of Oz—as if she were put together from odd, mismatching parts. After growing up on a ranch in Bear Valley, California, Gale Henry began her stage career with the Temple Opera Company. -

September 2016 Remembering the Wild, Wild Westerns Remembering the Wild, Wild Westerns – see page 2. Webfooters Post Card Club PO Box 17240 Portland OR 97217-0240 www.thewebfooters.com Remembering the Wild, Wild Westerns Before Batman, before Star Trek and space travel to the moon, Westerns ruled prime time television. Warner Brothers stable of Western stars included (l to r) Will Hutchins – Sugarfoot, Peter Brown – Deputy Johnny McKay in Lawman, Jack Kelly – Bart Maverick, Ty Hardin – Bronco, James Garner – Bret Maverick, Wade Preston – Colt .45, and John Russell – Marshal Dan Troupe in Lawman, circa 1958. Westerns became popular in the early years of television, in the era before television signals were broadcast in color. During the years from 1959 to 1961, thirty-two different Westerns aired in prime time. The television stars that we saw every night were larger than life. In addition to the many western movie stars, many of our heroes and role models were the western television actors like John Russell and Peter Brown of Lawman, Clint Walker on Cheyenne, James Garner on Maverick, James Drury as the Virginian, Chuck Connors as the Rifleman and Steve McQueen of Wanted: Dead or Alive, and the list goes on. Western movies that became popular in the 1940s recalled life in the West in the latter half of the 19th century. They added generous doses of humor and musical fun. As western dramas on radio and television developed, some of them incorporated a combination of cowboy and hillbilly shtick in many western movies and later in TV shows like Gunsmoke. -
