Roberge For comments, additions and corrections [email protected] Last update: 06/15/2009 This is an " under construction " and for now a nearly complete discography of Alfonso el Sabio. BIOGRAPHY Alfonso X "el Sabio" (1221-1284) was crowned King of Castille & León in 1252, and became one of the most significant leaders in Spanish history. Known for his learning, he fostered interaction between Christian, Jewish, and Islamic intellectuals, as well as accepted Provençal refugees. His was one of the significant reigns moving toward the reunification of Spain, and was so with an emphasis on tolerance and cultural achievement. Alfonso's work touched nearly every area of human activity, from science to political reform. His only weakness may have been the impracticality of some of his nobler ideas. The extent of Alfonso's role in the production of the Cantigas de Santa María is not entirely known. He conceived and supervised the compilation, and it appears that at least some texts are his. Whether he wrote any of the music is unknown, but many of the songs in the collection are certainly contrafacta. Some melodies have been identified as those of troubadour or trouvère songs, and even those of conducti or other scholastic compositions. It is also believed that many are folk tunes adopted for the occasion. The entire project seems to have had a moralistic intent, modifying the words of existing songs to describe instead the deeds & glory of the Virgin Mary. The term "cantiga" simply means a Spanish medieval lyric, something which survives in quantity, in numerous genres distinguished by the type of narrative. However, most cantigas survive as text only, making the present collection nearly unique for its music. Moreover, it is one of the largest collections of monophonic vernacular music from the middle ages, and of particular value not only for its inherent quality but also for its notational indications. The cantiga was first a secular form, but in this massive collection, Alfonso put the form to sacred use. Such a union of sacred & secular was to have a long history in Spain, represented ultimately in the villancico of the Renaissance. The Cantigas de Santa María are typical of cantigas in using the Galician-Portuguese language, the "lingua franca" so to speak of Iberian medieval poetry, and the ancestor of the present Portuguese & Galician languages. The Cantigas de Santa María encompass a huge number of themes, make reference to a variety of countries & places, and basically serve to tie everything in medieval life to miracles of the Virgin Mary. Thus they represent Alfonso's ideals of vernacular language expression and human devotion. Todd M. McComb, 9/00 CONTENT This discography is divided into two parts. Part I lists the all works attributed to Alfonso el Sabio. This list is based on the classification mhtml:file://C:\Documents and Settings\aoliveira\Desktop\CSM\Os CDs\Alfonso el Sa ... 29/7/2009 Alfonso el Sabio - A discography of attributed works Page 2 of 231 adopted by Walter Mettmann (Cantigas de Santa María, Edición de Walter Mettmann, Clássicos Casstalia # 134, Madrid 1986). I am not aware of any major changes in the attribution of those works. As a general rule, Cantigas are listed in the order appearing in the E codex (El Códice Esculariense, signatura j.b.2); this applies up to Cantiga 401. If those appear in another manuscript but with a different number, this number is cross-referenced to the E; this applies to To (El Códice de la iglesia de Toledo, signatura 103-23, also known as Biblioteca Nacional de Madrid, signatura 10.069), to T (El otro Códice, biblioteca Escurial, signatura T.j.1) and to F (Biblioteca Nacional de Florença). Number [402] to [427] are arbitrary numbers for Cantigas not appearing but identified as separate Cantigas in E or found only in F, T or To . The entry refers to the original recording; this explains why references to same label may be different from other discographies. It may also include re-edited material containing tracks not previously released. If the original material is not a CD, the medium is stated between [...]; [LP] means stereo compatible mono/stereo, unless otherwise stated. Each individual title is linked to a descriptive section containing as much informations as possible about the original recording; this description is cross-linked to available CDs actually on the market (August 2000) in North America or Western Europe. Great care has been taken to prevent misinformation and a large part of the data originates from records themselves (although often not as reliable as it should be). If the recording was not available, the content originates from usual sources (periodicals such as The Gramophone [and the Catalogue], Diapason [and the Catalogue], Bielefelder Katalog, Notes, and Fanfare, etc.). Alas ! if all this failed, reference was made to the french book "Diapason - Guide de la musique ancienne et baroque" (Coll. Bouquins, Robert Laffond, 1993) [GMAB]; although impressive in term of quality and amount of content, readers should be careful about many recording dates listed. For those interested in further reading on discography of medieval and renaissance period, they should refer to the following three publications: 1. Medieval and Renaissance Music on Long-Playing Records (MRM1) James Coover and Richard Colvig Detroit Studies in Music Bibliography # 6 (-end of 1961) Information service, Incorporated 10, West Warren, Detroit 1, Michigan 2. Medieval and Renaissance Music on Long-Playing Records (MRM2) James Coover and Richard Colvig Detroit Studies in Music Bibliography # (1962-1970 + corrections to # 6) Information service, Incorporated 10, West Warren, Detroit 1, Michigan 3. Early Music Discography - From Plainsong to the Sons of Bach (EMD1) Vol. 1: Record Index (covers 1970-1980) Oryx Press I tried to list titles according to their label and release dates. In the linked section, I tried to follow the track order of recording; in some cases when the recording was not available, the order may need correction by a careful reader owning the disc. In Part I, my goal is to cover all original recordings, but this may well be wishful thinking without comments and corrections. These could be directed to my E-mail address ([email protected]). Credit for any significant contribution will be given at the end of the discography. Part II deals with CD releases devoted mostly to Alfonso el Sabio and currently available on the North American and European market. mhtml:file://C:\Documents and Settings\aoliveira\Desktop\CSM\Os CDs\Alfonso el Sa ... 29/7/2009 Alfonso el Sabio - A discography of attributed works Page 3 of 231 This will be quite a complete and huge discography. The asked what stands in the way of integration, whether we can simultaneously think globally and think regionally and what are the strengths and weakness in the inherent processes and present outcomes over the many domains of society (which approaches to the challenges involved could be most effective for all parts of society) and in all parts of the world. In continuation, the Balkan world received a check up and (and the pressures affecting the region were assessed and global pulse was measured. Tensions between the Russian Federation and the United States of America, migration resulting from armed conflict and poverty in the Middle East, tensions within the European Union after the UK Brexit vote, and the new strategic paradigm of macro-regionalization were high on the agenda. The role of China was agreed to be of key importance in the global system. A number of presentations / additional discussion covered the ongoing global socio-economic crisis and a description of potentially accelerating global catastrophe; the survival of humanity and man’s future together with its rough edges and the paradoxes of life; our responsibility as a precondition for peace, the new Cold War and allocation of guilt; migration as an exceedingly complex problem, peace in the Middle East and the lack of Global Governance.

Avant. The Journal of the Philosophical-Interdisciplinary Vanguard Volume II, Number T/2011 avant.edu.pl/en ISSN: 2082-6710 Introduction Jan Iwańczyk, Witold Wachowski What musical past is represented by Ensemble Micrologus? What are its Middle Ages, its Renaissance? Imagined, accurate, probable, reconstructed, stylized…? Someone familiar with interpretations of early modern music and artistic activity of this music group may claim that such answers are formulated from a distorted perspective, as if looking at a museum cabinet. Let’s imagine a musician as a researcher. A researcher who administers music matter to their listeners and who looks for exploratory inspirations among living people and in contemporary forms of musical expression. According to our interviewee, Patrizia Bovi, a co-founder of Micrologus: in this type of practice, music is brought up to date automat- ically. Music notations from medieval codices are only one source, limited in itself. With- out exaggeration, it can be said that genuine interpreters of early modern music do not aim to reconstruct but to bring it to life. They are honest and do not intend to renounce their individuality; they would even say that doubts and not certainties are [their] best allies. Ensemble Micrologus is an famous Italian group who specialising in medieval music. Micrologus has been founded in 1984 by Patrizia Bovi (vocals, harp), Adolfo Broegg (lute, psaltery, citola), Goffredo Degli Esposti (flute, bombarde, bagpipes) and Gabriele Russo (viela, rebec, lyre). The grouphas researched its playing techniques through study of original sources and through vestiges in traditional music today. The musicians use reconstructions of early instruments60.
