Geothermal Development Company P.O.Box 17700 – 20100, Nakuru Kenya [email protected] Key words: Menengai, reservoir characteristics, Olkaria, discharge vapors, triangular diagrams ABSTRACT An analogy of representative gas compositions from wells drilled into the Menengai and Olkaria volcanic geothermal systems is presented in this paper with a view of drawing parallels as well as identifying variances in the characteristics of the reservoirs tapped by the wells. This contribution seeks to provide an insight into the possible processes that govern the composition of well discharge vapors as well as characterize the Menengai and Olkaria geothermal reservoirs. To achieve this, triangular diagrams comprising two major chemical constituents, H2O and CO2, together with other gas species H2S, H2, CH4 and N2 were employed to compare the chemical characteristics of vapors discharged from these two systems. It is found that the Olkaria reservoir fluids generally exhibit high H2O/CO2 ratios relative to the Menengai fluids. This is attributed to variations in CO2 gas content. High H2S content seems to characterize Menengai wells, particularly those that discharge from the vapor dominated zones. This inference is indicative of either a higher flux of magmatic gas or enhanced boiling in the reservoir as a consequence of a higher heat flux. The latter is found to be common in the wells as this inference is also complemented by the significantly high H2 content reported. -

Received 1990 July 19; in original form 1988 May 5 SUMMARY Previous seismicity studies in the Kenya Rift have not been able to determine accurately depths of earthquakes, nor have most of them determined epicentres precisely enough to allow correlation of the seismicity with particular surface features. We operated a small dense seismic array for 3 months near Lake Bogoria in the Kenya Rift with the aim of locating microearthquakes in 3-D. 572 earthquakes, 81 per cent with ML< 1.0, have been located. The majority of the events are associated with the larger older faults on the Rift shoulder rather than the young 'grid' faults in the centre of the Rift. Seismic activity in the central trough cannot be related directly to the surface faulting; we infer that it indicates the presence of deep buried faults. This possibility has important implications for extension estimates and models of the Rift. Most of the activity occurs at depths less than 12 km, and no normal activity is deeper than 16 km. There is a peak in seismic activity at a depth of 9-10 km and the cut-off depth for brittle failure is taken at 12 km. -

This knowledge of drought pattern is important in mitigating drought related hazards and in planning for adaptation. Arid and Semi Arid lands are usually more susceptible to drought because of increasing climate variability. River Basins, including the Kerio Valley Basin, are frequently affected by droughts. In this study, precipitation and streamflow data were reconstructed to determine streamflows from the missing periods. Moreover, the Streamflow Drought Index (SDI) was used to examine the probability of the recurrence of hydrological drought in the Basin betw11een the periods 1965-1983 and 1992-2009. This study also applied Water Poverty Index (WPI) to assess and monitor water requirements for different communities in the Kerio Valley Basin. The water requirements of seventy five administrative locations within the Kerio Valley Basin were assessed. The results from the analysis showed that the Baringo and West Pokot districts scored a lower index compared to those located in Keiyo, Marakwet, Koibatek, and Uasin Gishu districts. -

Box 785, Naivasha KENYA [email protected] ABSTRACT The high temperature geothermal prospects in Kenya are located within and are associated with the development of the Kenya Rift. Kenya Rift is a continental scale volcano-tectonic feature that stretches from northern to southern Africa. Development of the Rift started during the Oligocene (30million years ago) and activity has continued to recent times. The last 2 million years saw the development of large shield volcanoes within the axis of the rift. These centres are the most important geothermal prospects within the rift. Association between rifting and most of the occurrences of geothermal energy is mainly due to shallow magma chambers underneath the young volcanoes within the rift axis. KenGen in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy of the Government of Kenya has undertaken detailed surface studies of most of the prospects in the central sector of the rift which comprises Suswa, Longonot, Olkaria, Eburru, Menengai, Lakes Bogoria and Baringo, Korosi and Paka volcanic fields. Electric power is currently being generated at Olkaria with 130MWe installed while exploration drilling has been undertaken at Eburru and a 2.5MWe pilot plant is planned for development by KenGen and commissioning by 2009. Common methods that have been used by KenGen during exploration expeditions include geology (lithology, geochronology, structures); geophysics (seismic, gravity, magnetic, and resistivity); geochemistry (fluid and thermometry), heat flow and environmental baseline assessments. -

Box 100746, Nairobi 00101 KENYA [email protected] ABSTRACT Shallow temperature gradient holes are reliable in mapping geothermal prospects with heat loss features as surface manifestation. The sun least affects ground temperatures at 1 m depth and temperatures in the North rift are least affected by seasonal changes. Over 10,736 MWt is lost naturally from Menengai to Paka along the Kenyan rift. Most of the geothermal surface manifestations associated with the heat loss are oriented in the NW-SE with a few located in the NE-SW direction. Estimated down-hole temperature at I km depth is over 200oC. Fluid flow in the prospects from Lake Baringo to Paka is from East to West with an outflow to the north. 1. INTRODUCTION Kenya is located in East Africa where the Great African Rift virtually splits the landmass into two. 14 geothermal prospects have been identified within the Kenyan Rift Valley starting from Barrier in the north to Lake Magadi in the south with a potential of over 3,000 MWe (Figure 1). The rift is a graben and during the formation of the prospects, hot rocks were brought closer to the surface and with intensive faulting and presence of water, the geothermal systems were formed as shown in the model in Figure 2.
