The theoretical analysis finds that the dynamics of the art market are important but are difficult to formalise; the primary market is one where prices are set administratively; the secondary market, auction market, is the one where market-clearing occurs; success in the art market will come only to those artists whose works can command the same price in the secondary market as is set in the primary market; the overall market operates with considerable lags so that it may talce many years before artists’ work appear in the secondary market; and the dealers in the primary market play an important role as intermediaries.

No 85 November 2016 The Magazine of Trinity College, The University of Melbourne GATEWAY GENEROUS DONORS RECOGNISED Letter to the Editor ‘Your article on food at Trinity reminded me of how Syd Wynne’s kitchen prepared me for life in India. In 1964 I was the most junior tutor, the one whose duty it was to grind the SCR coffee beans. One night I had occasion to visit the kitchen, so I opened the door, turned on the light and watched as the place became alive with little black oblong shapes scuttling for the nearest shade. The following year I became a lecturer at Madras Christian College, with a flat to live in complete with a small kitchen and my very own cook/bearer. This kitchen, too, was alive with cockroaches, but thanks to Trinity caused me no discomfort, as I was already familiar with harmless kitchen wildlife.’ Ian Manning (TC 1963) We would love to hear what you think. • A Report on Survey Exhibitions in Australian Public Museums in the 1970S
HOLMES Jonathan Going Solo: a report on survey exhibitions in Australian public museums in the 1970s Abstract Solo survey exhibitions have been an important way in which the work of Australian artists has been critically reviewed and assessed. In the 1970s and early 1980s a flurry of survey exhibitions were mounted by the State Galleries, allowing the oeuvre of a large number of artists to be examined. Later in the 1980s and in the 1990s, the number of survey exhibitions being mounted by the State Galleries seemed to diminish quite dramatically as curatorial staff began to focus on other forms of exhibition. Jonathan Holmes, Jeff Malpas, Paul Zika, Maria Kunda and David Hansen have been investigating the part played by solo survey exhibitions in the history of Australian art since the mid-1970s. This paper will present the first findings of the research team – a survey of solo exhibitions in the 1970s - and will offer an early assessment of their significance in the broader context of contemporary Australian art and its critical discourse during that period. Biography Associate Professor Jonathan Holmes took up a teaching position at the Tasmanian School of Art in 1974, tutoring in Art History and Theory. He was appointed lecturer when the Tasmanian School of Art became a faculty of the University of Tasmania in 1981. His most recent exhibitions have been Figure It, a show that was developed, with Maria Kunda, to coincide with a National Portrait Gallery of Australia symposium on portraiture held in Hobart in 2001 and The Barcelona Studio: fragments of a brief history which is currently being shown in the Plimsoll Gallery.

A man who had only seen the early achievements of Australian art, who had landed on this continent for just a few days and suddenly.saw the 'wrong side' of its art, had to do his utmost to digest what was feasting his eyes. However, after two years of living and working as an artist in this island continent, especially after studying the oeuvres of many of its contemporary artists, he changed his attitude so greatly that he even began to adopt some of Booth's principles in his own painting, that he finds that the longer he lives in this country, the more he understands its people, the harder it is to get rid of such a style.
