DATA COLLECTION DESCRIPTION H. Anker and E.V. Oppenhuis DUTCH PARLIAMENTARY ELECTION STUDY, 1994 (ICPSR 6740) SUMMARY: This survey, the ninth in a series of election studies from the Netherlands, focuses on the May 3, 1994, elections for the Second Chamber of Parliament. This election occurred after the Lubbers-III Cabinet formed by the political parties CDA and Pvda had reached the end of its term. The survey was administered in two waves, one conducted before the election and one following the vote. In the first wave, respondents provided information on their interest in politics; what they considered the most important national problem; how they intended to vote in the upcoming election; political party membership and affiliation; attitudes toward government policies and officials; opinions on political and social issues such as crime, minorities, nuclear energy, and income differences; and a variety of personal and demographic characteristics. Many first-wave items were repeated in the second wave. During the second wave, respondents also reported the name of the party they had voted for in the election and their reasons for doing so. Other variables recorded voter perceptions of the stance of various political parties on issues such as crime, unemployment, pollution, and economic concerns; voter knowledge of national politicians; rating of political parties based on a 10-point left- right scale; attitudes toward politics and the effectiveness of government; union membership; and opinions on European unification. Respondents were also asked to describe how they would participate in the governing process if they thought that the Second Chamber of Parliament was about to consider a bill that the voter thought unjust, and, in addition, to state which national goals should receive the highest priority. UNIVERSE: Members of the Dutch electorate at the time of the 1994 parliamentary election. SAMPLING: A sample of 4,000 households was drawn from the Geographic Base Register, which is based to a large extent on the national mail delivery register of the Netherlands. From all eligible citizens within each household, one person was randomly selected by interviewing the person whose birthday was first. No substitution by another person was allowed in the case of refusal, no-contact, or other factors precluding an interview. NOTE: (1) The data file contains string variables which are 255 characters. Due to SAS limitations, these variables were split in the SAS data definition statements. As a result, 509 variables are identified in the SAS data definition statements. (2) The data collection instruments are written in Dutch. (3) The codebook, data collection instruments, and frequencies are provided as a Portable Document Format (PDF) file. The PDF file format was developed by Adobe Systems Incorporated and can be accessed using the Adobe Acrobat Reader. Information on how to obtain a copy of the Acrobat Reader is provided through the ICPSR Website on the Internet. Het laatste Rob-advies dat ik als minister uit handen van Jos van Kemenade kreeg. Eén beeld van die bijeenkomst is me in het bijzonder bijgebleven. Na de officiële uitreiking van het advies vond een debat plaats met de zeven voorzitters van de jongerenorganisaties van politieke partijen. Het beeld van de zeven jonge politici en daartussen Jos van Kemenade was treffend: niet zozeer Sneeuwwitje en de zeven dwergen, maar meer de ervaren oom en de zeven neefjes. Het symboliseerde een gaande en komende generatie politici. oorwoord Hij moet zich bij die bijeenkomst als een vis in het water hebben gevoeld. Het advies en het debat gingen over typische Van Kemenade-onderwerpen met als rode lijn: ons democratisch bestel moet meer van de mensen zelf worden. Politieke partijen hebben hierin een belangrijke rol, maar die moeten ze sterker vervullen. Politici moeten duidelijker zijn over keuzes en niet direct het compromis zoeken waardoor het lijkt alsof er niets te kiezen valt. “Onderschat de burger niet; die snapt best dat er compromissen moeten worden gesloten”, was Van Kemenades oproep. Het was niet de eerste keer dat ik Van Kemenade tegenkwam.

    Personalization of political newspaper coverage: a longitudinal study in the Dutch context since 1950 Ellis Aizenberg, Wouter van Atteveldt, Chantal van Son, Franz-Xaver Geiger VU University, Amsterdam This study analyses whether personalization in Dutch political newspaper coverage has increased since 1950. In spite of the assumption that personalization increased over time in The Netherlands, earlier studies on this phenomenon in the Dutch context led to a scattered image. Through automatic and manual content analyses and regression analyses this study shows that personalization did increase in The Netherlands during the last century, the changes toward that increase however, occurred earlier on than expected at first. This study also shows that the focus of reporting on politics is increasingly put on the politician as an individual, the coverage in which these politicians are mentioned however became more substantive and politically relevant. Keywords: Personalization, content analysis, political news coverage, individualization, privatization Introduction When personalization occurs a focus is put on politicians and party leaders as individuals. The context of the news coverage in which they are mentioned becomes more private as their love lives, upbringing, hobbies and characteristics of personal nature seem increasingly thoroughly discussed. An article published in 1984 in the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf forms a good example here, where a horse race betting event, which is attended by several ministers accompanied by their wives and girlfriends is carefully discussed1. Nowadays personalization is a much-discussed phenomenon in the field of political communication.     GroenLinks was er klaar voor. Triomf en tragiek van Paul Rosenmöller (1994-2002) Dik Verkuil Na het verkiezingsdebacle van 1994 braken voor GroenLinks zeven vette jaren aan. Onder aanvoering van Paul Rosenmöller ontwikkelde GroenLinks zich tot dé oppositiepartij tegen Paars. Na de Tweede Kamerverkiezingen van 1998 begon de partij zich ook serieus voor te bereiden op regeringsdeelname. Daarbij werd niet langer gedacht aan een progressief kabinet, maar aan een nieuw paars kabinet of een centrumlinks kabinet met de pvda en het cda.In2001 kwam GroenLinks echter in de problemen door een affaire rond het Kamerlid Singh Varma en door een onduidelijke koers in de oorlog tegen het terrorisme. De opkomst van Pim Fortuyn leek GroenLinks aanvankelijk in de kaart te spelen, maar leidde ertoe dat de partij na de Kamerverkiezingen van mei 2002 buitenspel kwam te staan. Rosenmöller als maoïst en vakbondsleider Met Rosenmöller kreeg GroenLinks voor het eerst een echte politiek leider. De aanbevelingen van de commissie-Lucas, waarvan hij lid was geweest, waren hem op het lijf geschreven. Al voor 1994 was hij de verpersoonlijking geworden van de ‘kwaliteitsoppositie’, een begrip dat hij zelf had verzonnen.1 Hij had steeds gehamerd op de noodzaak idealisme te verbinden met realisme. Paul Rosenmöller (1956) was de oudste uit een welgesteld katholiek gezin. Zijn vader was directeur bij het warenhuisconcern v&d; tegen topman Dreesmann zei hij ‘oom Anton’. Rosenmöller had een gelukkige jeugd in Heemstede. Het grootste deel van zijn middelbareschooltijd was hij vooral bezig met sport. Hij was lid van de Koninklijke hfc en de Haarlemse Lawn Tennisvereniging. Volgens Rosen- möller legden zijn ouders de basis voor zijn gevoel voor rechtvaardigheid en solidariteit.

Introductie Met name in de media lijkt consensus te zijn over het idee dat personalisering van de politiek in Nederland een algemeen verschijnsel is en dat partijen meer en meer van hun lijsttrekker afhankelijk zijn voor electoraal succes. “Partijen moeten het van personality’s hebben, niet van ideeën,” zo luidde een recente krantenkop in het NRC (De Gruyter, 2017). In hetzelfde opinieartikel werden meer vergelijkbare stellingen aangedragen, zoals: “Politici worden steeds prominenter. Anders dan partijen proberen zij de kiezer vaak niet meer te overtuigen met inhoudelijke boodschappen of programma’s, maar meer met charisma, gedrag, een paar slogans en een sterke nadruk op één, hooguit twee issues.” Nederland is niet het enige land waar de politiek minder zou gaan over partijen en ideologieën en meer over de politicus als persoon: personalisering wordt in de wetenschappelijke literatuur gezien als een trend die zichtbaar is in de meeste Westerse democratieën (McAllister, 2009, 571; Garzia, 2011, 698).
