THYS GROBBELAAR ACTUAL RAINFALL FOR 1 - 31 OCTOBER 2016 SENIOR GRAIN ANALYST, SENWES GRAINLINK

RAINFALL DURING THE SEASON Most weather forecasting services forecasted a later than normal 2016/17 season. July, which is the first month of the 2016/17 summer season, received above average rain, which contributed to the building up of sub-soil moisture in the case of cultivated fields. Almost no rain was received during August and September this year. Rainfall for October is indi- cated in the adjacent map. The CUMULATIVE RAINFALL FOR THE PERIOD 1 JULY 2016 TO 31 OCTOBER 2016 north-western and south-western parts of the traditional Senwes area received significantly less rain than the long-term average rain- fall. The Steynsrus and Arlington areas received good rain for October and winter wheat derived a lot of benefit from this. The average rainfall for October was 45.5 mm compared to the long- term average rainfall of 53.7 mm. The cumulative rainfall for the period 1 July to 31 October 2016 is indicated in the map below. The largest part of the central area of the traditional Senwes area received more rain this sea- son than the long-term average. ical indicators, we should look produced during an El Niño-type However, the north-western and at the impact of the El Niño, La season. Let's look at a few climate indi- cators. The SOI decreased signifi- cantly, which is a bit unnerving. Climatologists are, however, of the opinion that this will be a tempo- rary occurrence. During the recent serious drought experienced by the Graph 1. The total South African maize crop during El Niño, La Niña and neutral largest part of South Africa, this years. index was negative. The sea temperatures in the NINO3-4 area in the Pacific Ocean are, however, more import- ant. Should the average sea tem- perature be higher than normal, it would have an impact on the circulation patterns of moisture in the world, which usually impact negatively on the expected rainfall in Southern Africa. Sea tem- peratures in the NINO 3-4 area are fairly constantly lower than normal, which is encouraging. The El Niño-status is currently on “watch”. The sea temperatures during the 2014/15 season, cir- cled in red in the graph, were not much lower than normal and the second largest maize crop in South Africa was produced during that year. The predictions of the Seasonal Climate Watch of the South African Weather Services, which were issued on 20 October, are indicated below. They still predict reasonably good chances of rain from November 2016 until March 2017. There are no indi- cations of below average rainfall conditions.

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION There are various reasons for opti- mism about the coming season. In most cases sub-soil moisture con- ditions are better. We pray, trust and believe that we will receive rain after the very dry conditions of the past few years.

In front: Shannon Janse van Rensburg, Limoné le Badenhorst, Shannon Janse van Rensburg and Grange and Okker Botha (Senwes Training Officer). Limoné le Grange are grade 11 learners at the school. They were accompanied by Department Head, Johan Louw, who has been filling this position for the past six years. Louw indicated that the school and its learners really benefit from this annual visit, which usually involves 15 to 20 learners. “Theory as well as practice receive attention during these visits. It is ‘hands- on’ which really brings theory and practice together,” Louw added. Another advantage is that the learners also rub shoulders with people in the industry. Senwes Training Officer, Okker Botha, put them through their paces. First they had a 3 hour theory session at head office and the labo- ratory, where they learned about the grading and storage of grain. The next day, on 28 September, they were taken to the Viljoenskroon Silo where they experienced the delivery of grain, how it goes into the silo and how it is outloaded. Botha indicated that the learners would be writing an exam after the visit on what they experienced. The learners learned a lot during their two day visit and the project will enter its fourth year next year, with more learners considering agriculture as a career option. Senwes plays a critical role in this regard.

he winner of the Senwes Equipment and John TDeere Gator competition, the second leg of the WIN BIG competition, is Gert Roos. Gert really wanted to win the gator and used an interesting strategy to enter. He checked the number of ‘likes’ on the Senwes facebook-page and adjusted his number of entries accordingly. The 23-year old producer from the Belfast area entered numerous times. So much so that his whole family and friends knew it. A friend, Herman Smallberger, even scared him by telling him that the cost of the sms's was much higher than the 86c. Gert was very concerned and even his mother, Tharia, was part of the plot. No wonder Gert was shocked when Senwes con- tacted him with the news that he was the winner. He thought it was his family playing tricks on him again. Fortunately on Wednesday, 9 November 2016, he officially received his prize, which he will put to good use on their farm Leeubank in Wonderfontein, Mpumalanga. He will use the gator to herd sheep, visit his fields, planters and sprayers on the farm of approximately 3 000 hectares, on which they farm with maize as well as sunflower. He has never won anything before and because they teased him, mother Tharia, father Gerrit as well as brother Heinrich will be jealous of him riding around the farm on his John Deere Gator. He had the last laught after all! The newly established trademark of Senwes Equipment, together with John Deere, received wide exposure on social media with more than 100 000 people reached since the beginning of the range of competitions. 18 842 entries were received.
