Letter of Henry Jessey and John Tombes to the Churches of New
Letters of Henry J essey and John Tombes to the Churches of New England, 1645 1 N 22nd June 1645, seven days before his baptism by Hanserd O Knollys, Henry Jessey wrote to the churches of New England urging the reverend elders to be more tolerant of those persons within their congregations who dissented from the practice of infant baptism, and encouraging the New England divines to keep an open mind to what he believed was the truth of the antipedobaptist position. Toadd weight to 'his argument J essey requested the assistance of John Tombes, who was by the late 1640s, according to Richard Baxter, "reputed the most Learned and able Anabaptist in England". 2 J essey obtained and sent to New England a transcript of Tombes' as then unpublished response to Stephen Marshall's sermon of 1644 defending infant baptism, delivered in Westminster Abbey as the morning lecture to the House of Commons.s Tombes also contributed a prefatory letter, dated 25th May 1645, addressed to John Cotton and Jop.n Wilson of Boston.4 Henry Jessey (1601-1663) became pastor of the Independent Jacob Lathrop congregation, meeting in Southwark, London, in 1637,5 Gathered in 1616 by Henry Jacob, the church, over the years, had had some contact with the New World; Jacob had emigrated to Virginia in 1622, and Jessey's other predecessor, John Lathrop, had emigrated with some members of his congregation to Massachusetts Bay in 1634. In November 1624, Jessey became chaplain to Brampton Gurdon at Assington, Suffolk, and there came to know the family of John Win cllrop; Winthrop (1588-1649) was elected governor of the new Massa chusetts Bay corporation on 20th October 162~, while still in England, and sailed from Southampton on 8th April 1630. -

History of the Baptists By John T. Christian CHAPTER XVIII A GREAT DEBATE ON BAPTISM THE reign of Charles I, AD 1625-1649, brought almost unlimited disaster upon England. The claim that the king was above law came in with the Stuarts. "He had inherited from his father," says Macaulay, "political theories, and was much disposed to carry them into practice. He was like his father, a zealous Episcopalian. He was, moreover, what his father had never been, a zealous Arminian, and, though no Papist, liked a Papist much better than a Puritan" (Macaulay, History of England, I., 64). Dr. Humphrey Gower, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Cambridge, accurately stated the contention. He says: We still believe and maintain that kings derive not their titles from the people; but from God. That to him only they are accountable. That it belongs not to subjects, either to create or to censure; but to honor and obey their Sovereign; who comes to be so by a fundamental hereditary Right of Succession; which no religion, no law, no fault or forfeiture, can alter or diminish. Account must be taken of another person who was the most intelligent, unscrupulous, and tyrannical enemy that the Baptists of England ever had. Abbot, at the beginning of the reign, was Archbishop of Canterbury; but he was to be succeeded by William Laud the growing Churchman of the times. Macaulay says of him: Of all the prelates of the Anglican Church, Laud had departed farthest from the principles of the Reformation, and drawn nearest to Rome. -

Severely persecuted following the Restoration, toleration in 1689 brought its own perils. Particular Baptists were fortunate in having several strong leaders, especially the London trio of Hanserd Knollys, William Kiffin, and Benjamin Keach. Such a small and severely persecuted group as the Baptists could afford little time for academic pursuits, thus of necessity most of their theology was practical in nature. Benjamin Keach (1640-1704) was the most outstanding practical theologian among the English Particular Baptists of the late seventeenth century. This dissertation is a study of Keach, in particular his writings on public worship and practical theology. Although Keach was a prolific author, he has been almost completely neglected by scholars. -

Conflict and Complexity: Army and Gentry in Interregnum Herefordshire By PAUL J. PINCKNEY he major problems of historical understanding of the 1650s in England revolve around the new power of the army and its relationship to the traditional power of the gentry. Detailed county studies can shed light on the complexities of this relationship and help T 1 answer related questions of national importance. The main arguments of this article are interrelated. Herefordshire does not exhibit a strong military presence in the 1650s, and an emphasis should instead be on a gentry resurgence by the mid 1650s. Moreover, we should be aware of the profound fluidity of the 1650s, when army officers and local gentlemen were all involved in taking advantage of the many opportunities for buying land presented by the nationalization of crown, royalist, and church holdings—both groups working to advance themselves while in ignorance of the fate that would befall the republic in 1660. The re- creation of a durable equilibrium between old and new county elites was not achieved by unitary design, driven by a single leader or cabal, nor was it an intentional settlement. Instead, this process amounted to a medley of mixing, melting, and melding family, religious, and political motives and enterprises emerging from many Herefordshire actors' responses to each other's moves. That unique story is what we explore here. 1. An army leader joins the gentry The lovely border county of Herefordshire, overwhelmingly royalist in sentiment in the first civil war, was subdued permanently by parliamentarian forces only in 1645-6, and a garrison remained at Hereford until the Restoration.2 No county could boast of two more outstanding leaders for its tragic divisions. -

Kidderminster, Bewdley and Stourbridge
CHAPELS SOCIETY VISIT TO KIDDERMINSTER, BEWDLEY AND STOURBRIDGE 14 APRIL 2012 Our theme is the work, witness and heritage of Nonconformity in the industrial towns of North Worcestershire, a district which became a powerhouse for the iron, glass and carpet industries in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The area was a key centre for early Dissent and there were recusant Catholic families too. Enriched by Methodism and New Dissent, there was a thriving and diverse culture of chapel-going by the nineteenth century. We have a day exploring the religious heritage of this area. VISIT SCHEDULE The coach will depart from Stourbridge Junction railway station at 10.30 am. Stourbridge Junction has a very frequent service of trains from Birmingham Moor Street and Snow Hill stations. Any participants who wish to remain on the train until Kidderminster and make their own way to Baxter United Reformed Church should notify the organisers in advance and pay the appropriate rail fare. Those arriving by car should have no difficulty in parking at Stourbridge Junction (not to be confused with Stourbridge Town) railway station, which has ample free parking at weekends. We expect to complete our day back at the Stourbridge Junction by 6.pm, having had a chapel tea at the New Road Methodist Church, Stourbridge. KIDDERMINSTER The coach will take us first to Kidderminster, a town which grew rapidly from the middle years of the eighteenth century as a centre (later the principal centre) for the manufacture of carpets; even today much remains of the factories of such companies as Brintons.
