Bloomberg News Expose of Kushner Real Estate Holdings Wins Gold Keyboard in 2018 New York Press Club Journalism Awards
NEWS FROM THE NEW YORK PRESS CLUB www.nypressclub.org | @NYPressClub contact: Debra Caruso, DJC Communications 212.971.9708 [email protected] BLOOMBERG NEWS EXPOSE OF KUSHNER REAL ESTATE HOLDINGS WINS GOLD KEYBOARD IN 2018 NEW YORK PRESS CLUB JOURNALISM AWARDS "Unmasking the Kushner Real Estate Empire" by Bloomberg News is the grand-prize winner of the New York Press Club's 2018 Gold Keyboard. The NYPC's highest award singles out a pair of reporters who peeled back the layers to reveal real estate deals involving the Kushner family that stretched across the world and into the White House and that are now the subject of federal investigations. An additional 76 winners in 29 categories were selected from almost 500 entries submitted by TV, radio, newspapers, websites, magazines and newswires in New York City and around the U.S. Awards will be presented at the Club’s annual dinner, Monday, June 4, 2018 at The Water Club in Manhattan, 7 p.m. A special note this year: Washington Post editor-in-chief Martin Baron will receive the NYPC’s first non-contested award. The “Gabe Pressman Truth to Power Award” recognizes our friend, colleague and paragon – WNBC’s Gabe Pressman, who died last June – for his seven decades of reporting news and defending the First Amendment and media freedoms. “Marty Baron and Gabe Pressman are from different journalism eras but both share an indisputable passion for our craft and an unquenchable drive to present the truth and challenge corrupt power,” said NY Press Club president Steve Scott. Scott added that the high number of entries across all news media platforms attests to the continued good health of journalism despite challenges from some about the accuracy and legitimacy of professional journalists. -
Partisans, Nonpartisans, and the Antiwar Movement in the United
American Politics Research Volume 35 Number 4 July 2007 431-464 © 2007 Sage Publications Partisans, Nonpartisans, and 10.1177/1532673X07300763 http://apr.sagepub.com hosted at the Antiwar Movement in http://online.sagepub.com the United States Michael T. Heaney University of Florida Fabio Rojas Indiana University, Bloomington American social movements are often bitterly divided about whether their objectives are achieved better by working with one of the major political par- ties or by operating independently. These divisions are consequential for how social movements and political parties respond to one another. First, differing partisan attitudes shape the structure of activist networks, leading activists to join organizations with others who share their party loyalties or disloyalties. Second, partisan attitudes affect how activists participate in the movement, with strong partisans more likely to embrace institutional tactics, such as lob- bying. Third, partisanship affects activists’ access to the institutions of govern- ment, such as Congress. Relying on surveys of antiwar activists attending large-scale public demonstrations in 2004 and 2005 and a Capitol Hill Lobby Day in September 2005, the authors argue that some activists integrate into major party networks through the “party in the street,” an arena of significant party-movement interaction. Keywords: antiwar movement; social movements; political parties; party in the street; party identification; activist networks; social networks We believe that most of [House Minority Leader Nancy] Pelosi’s constituents perceive her as antiwar because they know only of her initial vote and her later public statements. We believe that we can pressure her by exposing the gap between her rhetoric and her votes and other leadership actions and inactions. -

The movement’s participants reduced the immediate impact of New York City’s displacement policies by squatting in buildings earmarked for destruction and negotiating a higher percentage of units for low-income tenants in high-rise developments. Further, it analyzes the formation and politicization of El Comité, one of the main organizations of the Puerto Rican Left in the 1970s, illustrating how a radical political perspective developed organically among predominantly working-class Puerto Rican activists, rather than as a product of a priori ideology. -
