Winemaker Corinna Faravel is a pioneer among a group of young artisans who early on recognized the hidden potential of the Ventoux, a diverse yet spectacular region in France’s south known for far too long for the quantity but not the quality of its wines. Located due east from the mountain vineyards of Gigondas, Domaine Martinelle combines an organic focus with a fiery passion in wines that speak honestly of the land’s beauty and endless pleasure. CERTIFIED ORGANIC WINERY: Domaine Martinelle WINEMAKERS: Corinna Faravel ESTABLISHED: 2001 REGION: FRANCE • Rhône Valley • Lafare APPELLATION: Ventoux AOC BLEND: 65% Grenache, 20% Syrah, 13% Mourvèdre, 2% old-vine Carignan, young Counoise, Terret Noir and Vaccarèse VINEYARDS: Estate vineyards are located in the foothills of the Dentelles de Montmirail, east of Gigondas. The predominant soils are Trias (decomposed limestone with iron-rich, ochre topsoil); other areas have richer, clay-based soils. Vineyards face east/southeast; a majority of parcels are found on a broad, terraced hill that at its peak is 300 meters high. AGE OF VINES: 10 to 50 years WINEMAKING: Hand-harvested, with grapes sorted in the fields and at the cellar. Grapes are destemmed and crushed, then fed via gravity into unlined cement tanks and fermented on indigenous yeasts. After malolactic fermentation, the final blend is assembled and aged further in tank. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. TASTING IMPRESSIONS: Aromas of red berries, garrigue, light pepper. Bright and fresh, with flavors of raspberry and red plum.     Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape Rouge 2018 THE VINTAGE The 2018 vintage is characterized by exceptional weather conditions. Flowering took place in the best possible conditions, with a historically abundant grape output. A few rainy episodes at the end of the spring complicated things a little with an attack of mildew, but the good weather then settled down until harvest, which took place under idyllic conditions. The wines are beautiful. DESCRIPTION Château de Beaucastel has long been regarded as one of the greatest wines in France. It is notorious for its elegance, balance, and aging potential. Beaucastel has an exceptional terroir at the northern limit of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, exposed to the Mistral wind. All 13 varieties of the appellation have been organically grown since the 1960s. SITUATION Châteauneuf-du-Pape, between Orange and Avignon, Château de Beaucastel red is a 70-hectare (173-acre) vineyard. TERROIR Château de Beaucastel is 110 hectares (272 acres), with one single plot at the north of the appellation. The terroir is archetypal of the best terroirs in Châteauneuf: rolled pebbles on the surface, sand, clay, and limestone deeper down. The vines are old and have been organically grown for 50 years, which has allowed the roots to grow exceptionally deep. Beaucastel grows all 13 grape varieties authorized by the appellation. PROCESS Each variety is harvested separately and manually. Vinification takes place in oak fermenters for the reductive varieties (Mourvèdre, Syrah) and in traditional enameled concrete tanks for the oxidative grapes (all the others). Once the malolactic fermentation is finished, Famille Perrin blends the different varieties.

In lieu of payment for his laboratory’s service, he sometimes accepts wine, which the micro-négociant com- pany he established in 2002, “Xavier Vins,” uses to produce exceptional wines of the southern Rhône Valley. Originally a physical chemist, Xavier is particularly interested in how the spectrum of dissolved mineral salts in the groundwater of each vineyard, which varies from parcel to parcel, influences the expression of terroir in the grapes. “I’m a trained enologist,” he says. “I’ve examined wine down to the molecular level. Which, in the end, convinces me that what is most important are the vines, the depth of the roots, and the health and balance of the vineyard.” Using a combination of skills, Xavier Vignon has established himself as both a mer- chant and winemaker. Since 2002, Xavier has worked as a negociant, gathering the very best grapes produced by top growers to make his own Xavier Vins line. Since he’s an enologist he has the knowledge and experience needed to navigate vineyards and produce high-quality wines of different varieties. He produced his first Xavier Vins vintage in 2007. Today, they continue to produce their wines at Chateau Husson in Courthezon, France. In addition to producing wines in the Chateauneuf du Pape appellation, he also creates wines in Gigondas and villages in the Cotes du Rhône.
