  • CHRISTMAS Christmas with Naxos
CATALOGUE 2018 CHRISTMAS Christmas with Naxos Christmas is one of the most richly celebrated seasons around the world. While its focus rests on just a few days of the year, the wealth of music that has been written to mark its spirit and story is astonishingly plentiful and varied. Musicians continue to be inspired by the message of Christmas: in the following pages you will find examples of contemporary choral works by British composers John Tavener, James MacMillan and Sasha Johnson Manning alongside the established masterpieces of composers such as J. S. Bach, Handel and Berlioz. The Christmas story has also been recorded in opera, ballet and instrumental music, in a range of expression that runs from piety to jollity. Easy-listening compilations are well represented in the listings, including regional collections and the gamut of carols that are annual favourites, heard either in the splendour of Europe's historic cathedrals or in the local community. We hope our catalogue will serve you with music that is both comfortingly familiar and refreshingly novel. May you spend a very happy Christmas with Naxos. • Dynamics of Musical Success: a Bayesian Nonparametric Approach
Dynamics of Musical Success: A Bayesian Nonparametric Approach Khaled Boughanmi1 Asim Ansari Rajeev Kohli (Preliminary Draft) October 01, 2018 1This paper is based on the first essay of Khaled Boughnami's dissertation. Khaled Boughanmi is a PhD candidate in Marketing, Columbia Business School. Asim Ansari is the William T. Dillard Professor of Marketing, Columbia Business School. Rajeev Kohli is the Ira Leon Rennert Professor of Business, Columbia Business School. We thank Prof. Michael Mauskapf for his insightful suggestions about the music industry. We also thank the Deming Center, Columbia University, for generous funding to support this research. Abstract We model the dynamics of musical success of albums over the last half century with a view towards constructing musically well-balanced playlists. We develop a novel nonparametric Bayesian modeling framework that combines data of different modalities (e.g. metadata, acoustic and textual data) to infer the correlates of album success. We then show how artists, music platforms, and label houses can use the model estimates to compile new albums and playlists. Our empirical investigation uses a unique dataset which we collected using different online sources. The modeling framework integrates different types of nonparametrics. One component uses a supervised hierarchical Dirichlet process to summarize the perceptual information in crowd-sourced textual tags and another time-varying component uses dynamic penalized splines to capture how different acoustical features of music have shaped album success over the years. Our results illuminate the broad patterns in the rise and decline of different musical genres, and in the emergence of new forms of music. They also characterize how various subjective and objective acoustic measures have waxed and waned in importance over the years.

Appendix A1.1. Study 1: Participants and Sampling Based on population statistics from Eurostat (2016), a German commercial online provider and its subsidiaries in UK and Spain realised 'crossed' target quotas for generation (gen Y: 18-34, gen X: 35-51, gen B: 52-68), education level (ISCED 0- 2, ISCED 3-4, ISCED 5-8) and gender (female/male), arriving at an overall gross sample of 10,180 subjects with approximate equal participants from each of the three countries. Due to internal logics of the project producing the data, survey experiments were conducted in two waves, December 2016 (n = 3,485) and May 2017 (n = 6,659). A1.2. Study 1: Stimulus Material Employed musical excerpts stem from a pool of 549 popular music tracks that had been selected from the digital music library of the collaborating audio branding agency HearDis (see Acknowledgements). Frequencies of selected tracks across genres were deliberately unbalanced, in order to represent typical frequencies of genres in a music library of the audio branding industry (see Figure 4). The 30s excerpts were cut from the original recordings (if possible) to always contain the end of first verse and the beginning of first chorus. Subsequently, resulting audio files were technically and perceptually normalised in terms of loudness. Randomised excerpt selection and playback for individual participants was programmed so that each track had the same selection probability within each combinatory cell of sociodemographic variables and country of residence. A1.3. Study 1: Data Pre-processing The obtained gross sample of both online survey experiment waves underwent extensive data cleansing.

  • Instrumentational Complexity of Music Genres and Why Simplicity Sells
Instrumentational complexity of music genres and why simplicity sells Gamaliel Percino1, Peter Klimek1, Stefan Thurner1;2;3∗ 1Section for Science of Complex Systems; CeMSIIS; Medical University of Vienna; Spitalgasse 23; A-1090; Austria. 2Santa Fe Institute; 1399 Hyde Park Road; Santa Fe; NM 87501; USA. 3IIASA, Schlossplatz 1, A-2361 Laxenburg; Austria. Abstract Listening habits are strongly influenced by two opposing aspects, the desire for variety and the demand for uniformity in music. In this work we quantify these two notions in terms of musical instrumentation and production technologies that are typically involved in crafting popular music. We assign a \complexity value" to each music style. A style is complex if it shows the property of having both high variety and low uniformity in instrumentation. We find a strong inverse relation between variety and uniformity of music styles that is remarkably stable over the last half century. Individual styles, however, show dramatic changes in their \complexity" during that period. Styles like \new wave" or \disco" quickly climbed towards higher complexity in the 70s and fell back to low complexity levels shortly afterwards, whereas styles like \folk rock" remained at constant high complexity levels. We show that changes in the complexity of a style are related to its number of sales and to the number of artists contributing to that style. As a style attracts a growing number of artists, its instrumentational variety usually increases. At the same time the instrumentational uniformity of a style decreases, i.e. a unique stylistic and increasingly complex expression pattern emerges. In contrast, album sales of a given style typically increase with decreasing complexity.
