Long Live the Revolutions: Fighting for France's Political Future in the Long Wake of the Commune, 1871-1880 Abstract The traumatic legacies of the Paris Commune and its harsh suppression in 1871 had a significant impact on the identities and voter outreach efforts of each of the chief political blocs of the 1870s. The political and cultural developments of this phenomenal decade, which is frequently mislabeled as calm and stable, established the Republic's longevity and set its character. Yet the Commune's legacies have never been comprehensively examined in a way that synthesizes their political and cultural effects. This dissertation offers a compelling perspective of the 1870s through qualitative and quantitative analyses of the influence of these legacies, using sources as diverse as parliamentary debates, visual media, and scribbled sedition on city walls, to explicate the decade's most important political and cultural moments, their origins, and their impact. -

Le Tour de la France par deux enfants, a textbook written in 1877 by Augustine Fouillée, is our entry point to illustrate the strategies used in manufacturing French identity. We also analyze other texts: political speeches from the revolutionary era and from the Third Republic, as well as testimonies from both students and teachers written during the twentieth century. Bringing together close readings and research from various fields – history, linguistics, sociology, and philosophy – we use an interdisciplinary approach to shed light on language and national identity formation. Our findings underscore the connections between French primary education and national identity. Our analysis also contends that national identity in France during the Third Republic was an artificial construction and demonstrates how otherness was put in the service of populism. -

It regards the author not as an heir or precursor to any given political tradition, but rather as a compelled syncretist whose primary philosophical concern was the moral significance of the democratic age. It suggests that Tocqueville devised his ‘new political science’ with a keen view to the existential implications of modernity. In order to support that suggestion, the essay explores the genealogy of Tocqueville’s moral and political thought and draws a relation between his analysis of democracy and his personal experience of modernity. Keywords: A. de Tocqueville – Modernity – Liberalism – Inquiétude – Religion Introduction. Relatively few authors in the history of political thought have produced an intellectual legacy of such overarching resonance as Alexis de Tocqueville. Even fewer, perhaps, have so persistently eluded ordinary analytical and exegetical frameworks, presenting to each astute observer a face so nuanced as to preclude serious interpretive consensus. As writes Lakoff (Lakoff 1998), ‘disagreement over textual interpretation in the study of political thought is not uncommon’. However, ‘it usually arises around those who left writings of a patently divergent character’ (p. 437). When we thus consider the ‘extraordinarily coherent and consistent nature’ of Alexis de Tocqueville’s political philosophy, it appears somewhat odd that the academic consensus surrounding that author relates almost exclusively to the grandeur of his intellectual achievement (Lukacs 1959, 6). -

S. shores, another aristocratic comparativist, Alexis de Tocqueville, came to cast a critical yet affectionate eye on this republic. Since I am fond of both of these thinkers, I offer this overview of the judicial uses of the writings of the earlier scholar in appreciation of the later one. I. Introduction The United States has never been given to particular adoration of foreign observers of its mores, who quite often turn out to be critics rather than admirers. Nevertheless, one of its favorite visitors 1 since his one and only appearance on the scene in 1831-1832 2 is the 25-year-old magistrate Alexis de Tocqueville (1805-1859), sent by his government to study penal reform in the new republic. -

Stanley Hoffmann, 1928-2015
H-France Salon Volume 7 (2015), Issue 12 Stanley Hoffmann, 1928-2015 Stanley Hoffmann, Paul and Catherine Buttenwieser University Professor emeritus at Harvard University, died September 13 after a long illness. He was eighty-six years old and had taught at Harvard for two-thirds of his lifetime. Stanley Hoffmann’s scholarly work ranged widely from French domestic politics to American foreign policy to international relations. He published nineteen books and hundreds of articles and book reviews. A political scientist of an increasingly rare breed in American academe, he was more comfortable reflecting on philosophy and literature than electoral results, the latter never number-crunched but always considered in relation to a broader political culture. As teacher, scholar, and public intellectual, Hoffmann embodied the liberal arts ethos. Stanley Hoffmann was born in Vienna in 1928 to an American father and an Austrian mother. He grew up in France, where he and his mother relocated in the 1930s, first in Paris and then in Nice after the defeat of 1940. Considered legally Jewish, though not raised as such, he and his mother found relatively more safety in the south of France, where he continued to go to school and was looked after by doting schoolteachers.1 The experience fleeing Paris and then later the complete occupation of France understandably influenced his interests: “It wasn’t I who chose to study world politics,” he reflected in 1993. “World politics forced themselves on me at a very early age.”2 Returning to Paris in 1945, he entered the prestigious Institut d’Études Politiques (SciencesPo), from which he would eventually earn a doctorate after a stint as a visiting student at Harvard in 1951. -
