College of Science, Imphal A checklist of spiders of Manipur state, north east India is provided here based on the spider study Manipur, India carried out from February 2011 to January 2014 [UGC MRP No. F.No. 39-589/2010 (SR) dt. 10.01.2011] to assess the spider diversity of the study area. A total of 152 species belonging to 87 genera Siliwal M Wildlife Information Liason and 26 families were recorded with Salticidae, Lycosidae, Araneae, Tetragnathidae, Thomisidae being Development Society, 9A, Lal the dominant families among all the reported families during the study. During the study, 3 species, Bahadur Colony, Peelamedu, Myrmarachne kiboschensis Lassert, 1925, Latrodectus elegans Thorell 1898, Epocilla praetextata Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu, India Thorell 1887 were recorded for the first time in India. And in addition to these, a new species to the trapedoor spider Genus: Conothele Thorell, 1878 was also recorded. Keywords: Spider, Manipur, Myrmarachne kiboschensis, Latrodectus elegans, Epocilla praetextata, Conothele & Khunthokhanbi (new species) Introduction Spiders (Arachnidae: Araneae) are one of the diverse and functionally important predators regulating the terrestrial arthropod populations [1]. They are one of the most important biological agents in nature which help in keeping the insect population in check. Though the comprehensive account of spiders, which are potential bio-control agent has not been available in India so far, but the spiders are included as important bio-control agents in the Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategies. India is rich in spider fauna, being represented by 1686 species and 438 genera of 65 families [2]. Major study on spider had been concentrated in Southern, eastern, central and north-eastern part [3]. In India, Pocock [4] and Tikader [5-9] Majumder [10] and others recorded many spider fauna from different parts of the country, Manipur was excluded. ZSI (Zoological Survey of India) for the first time recorded some of [11] the spider fauna of Manipur in State Fauna Series No. 10 . Kananabala et al. [12] (2012) recorded & studied the Burmese widow spider Latrodectus elegans Thorell 1898 from Manipur which is the first record of India. A new record of an Ant- like spider Myrmarachne kiboschensis Lassert, 1925 [12]. They studied the edible spiders of the genus: Nephila of Manipur (2013) and some newly recorded species of Salticidae (2014) in the [13] Departmental Proceedings. A new species of the genus: Conothele khunthokhanbi sp. nov. was also recorded. The present work, carried out to prepare a checklist of the spiders of Manipur state (Total area 1,848 sq. km), Northeast India, it shares border with Myanmar (lies between 23083'N – 25068'; 93003'E – 94078'E). It is felt that documentation of the spiders from this state will help the students who are interested in the field of spiders. 2. Materials and Methods The spider study was carried out from 1st Feb. 2011 to 31st Jan. 2014 during the survey work of the UGC sponsored MRP Ref. No. F.No. 39-589/2010 (SR) dt. 10.01.2011 in different regions of 9 districts of Manipur, 4 in the valley and 5 in the hills. Correspondence Kananbala A The present checklist is presented in a taxonomic order; family, genus and species. The P.G. Department of Zoology, classification of Araneae follows Platnick (2012). It is also prepared by referring documents, D.M. College of Science, Imphal Manipur, India ~ 2209 ~ Journal of Entomology and Zoology Studies consulting published books and journals. Unpublished b.
