By using motionless lures in simultaneous-presentation prey-choice tests, how the predators respond specifically to the static appearance of ants and ant mimics was determined. These findings suggest a rarely considered adaptive trade-off for Batesian mimics of ants. Mimicry may be advantageous when it deceives ant-averse potential predators, but disadvantageous in encounters with ant- eating specialists. Nine myrmecophagic (ant-eating) species (from Africa, Asia, Australia and North America) and one araneophagic (spider-eating) species (Portia fimbriata from Queensland) were tested with ants (5 species), with myrmecomorphic (ant-like) salticids (6 species of Myrmarachne) and with non-ant-like prey (dipterans and ordinary salticids). The araneophagic salticid chose an ordinary salticid and chose flies significantly more often than ants. They act as benchmarks to understand human interaction with the natural world. Of the two mega diverse Indian states, Rajasthan with an area of about 342,239 sq. km. is the largest state of India. The state is symbolized by its arid and semi-arid tracts. Ecologically suitable forest areas of the state over time have been declared as National Parks, Wild Life Sanctuaries and Reserves. Wildlife wing of the State Forest Department (SFD) maintain these protected areas in a scientific manner, conducive for conservation of wild life in the area. Temporal population of any life form actively select a suitable site for sustainance. Its fitness is directly influenced by the ability to find a suitable habitat based on innate preference for food, shelter and absence of enemies. -

Phlegra, Phintella, Yamangalea, jumping spiders, new species, taxonomy, biogeography Introduction As the result of intense taxonomic research and biodiversity surveys conducted over the last decades, our knowl- edge on the Australian salticid fauna has increased considerably. Including the taxa treated here, the current check- list comprises 77 verified genera and 368 species (Richardson & Żabka 2003; Żabka 2006, unpubl.). Tropical and temperate rainforests and deserts are especially fruitful in providing new data and the genera Phlegra, Phintella and Yamangalea illustrate this rule very well, each being of different origin and distributional history. Material and methods The material for study came from the collections of the Australian Museum, Sydney (AMS) and the Queensland Museum, Brisbane (QMB). Methods of specimen examination follow Żabka (1991). Photographs of specimens (fixed in Taft hair gel) were taken with a Canon A620 camera and Nikon 800 stereomicroscope and were digitally processed with ZoomBrowser and HeliconFocus software. The data on latitudes and longitudes (given either in minutes and seconds or in decimal format) are re-written from the labels. -

The tribe Aelurillini (7 genera, 27 species) is represented in 16 states and in 2 union territories, Euophryini (10 genera, 16 species) in 14 states and in 4 union territories, Leptorchestini (2 genera, 3 species) only in 2 union territories, Plexippini (22 genera, 73 species) in all states except Mizoram and in 3 union territories, and Salticini (3 genera, 11 species) in 15 states and in 4 union terrioties. West Bengal harbours maximum number of species, followed by Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. Out of 129 species of the spiders listed, 70 species (54.3%) are endemic to India. Langona warchalowskii n. sp., a new jumping spider from South Africa is described. Key words: arachnology, taxonomy, Salticidae, Langona, new species, Afrotropical Region The genus Langona SIMON, 1901 contains 33 species (Platnick 2007), 17 of them (including the type) were described originally from Africa. Formerly described species are very poorly known. A few of African species were redescribed by Hęciak & Pró- szyński 1983. Recently described African Langona species have good documentation (Hęciak & Prószyński 1983, PrócHnieWicz & Hęciak 1994, WesołoWska & russell- SMITH 2000, WesołoWska 2006). The genus may be separated from other Aelurillinae by toothless inner cheliceral margin. Colouration is not diagnostic, as members of Langona share characteristic stripped pattern with the majority of other Aelurillinae. More reliable characters are visible in the structure of genital organs. The male pedi- palp has only single apophysis acompanied by a bunch of very dense, long and thick setae. Embolus is coiled on tip of tegulum and partially or fully hidden in deep cymbial pocket (cavity between apical part of tegulum and cymbium – see logunov 1996). The epigyne has strongly sclerotized shields in posterior part. They cover copulatory openings. Internal structure of epigyne is rather complicated, but usually well visible accessory glands fall into seminal ducts. Below description of a new species of the genus from Cape Province in South Africa is presented. -

Some feed on nectar (Nyffeler 2016; Nyffeler et al. 2016). Nectivory by the chrysilline Phintella vittata C. L. Koch 1846 has been described by Soren & Chowdhury (2011). Salticid spiders in turn may protect plants with extrafloral nectaries from their insect enemies (Ruhren & Handel 1999). Salticids are also known to feed on arthropod eggs or larvae (Jackson & Hallas 1986, Nyffeler et al. 1990). Grob (2015) documented feeding by the chrysilline Siler semilgaucus (Simon 1901a) on ant larvae taken directly from ant workers. Moffet (1991) photographed very small (~2 mm) Phyaces comosus Simon 1902 feeding on both eggs and young in a tended brood of the salticid spider Epeus Peckham & Peckham 1886. Many spiders including the salticid Hentzia palmarum (Hentz 1832) are known to feed on lepidopteran eggs (Pfannenstiel 2008) but photographic documentation of this behavior is lacking. Presently eight species has been reported. Three of them were known only from their males, four from females and only one from both male and females. The type species ( Chrysilla lauta) , C. albens , C. delicata, C. doriai, C. deelemani and C. acerosa belongs to Asia. This is the first record of genus Chrysilla from India. The specimen was collected from sugarcane field of Sonitpur district of Assam, India. The type specimen was deposited in the Biodiversity Museum, Department of Zoology and Animal Ecology and Wildlife Biology lab, Gauhati University, India. The genus Chrysilla can be distinguished from Phintella and Leius by the thin , long and more colourfull bodies, stronger RTA and much longer than wide genital bulb of male palps, copulatory openings separated by one diameter or so and piriform spermathecae of epigyne. The new species is similar to that Chrysilla lauta , Chrysilla deelemani and Chrysilla acerosa but differs from the former two by the wider than long RTA with a ventral tip and the much longer embolus as in Chrysilla acerosa Wang and Zhang, 2012, differ from the later by the shape of prosoma, hight of clypeus, bulbus and median apophysis. -

Salticidae (Arachnida, Araneae) of Thailand: new species and records of Epeus Peckham & Peckham, 1886 and Ptocasius Simon, 1885 Barbara Maria Patoleta1, Joanna Gardzińska2 and Marek Żabka1 1 Faculty of Exact and Natural Sciences, Siedlce University of Natural Sciences and Humanities, Siedlce, Poland 2 Warsaw College of Engineering and Health, Warsaw, Poland ABSTRACT The study is based on new material from the collections of the Naturalis Biodiversity Centre in Leiden (RNHM) and the Hungarian Natural History Museum (HNHM) and addresses issues in two genera: Epeus Peckham & Peckham, 1886 and Ptocasius Simon, 1885 from Thailand. Both genera are of Asian/Indomalayan origin, the latter with a diversity hotspot in the subtropical valleys of the Himalayas. Based on morphological data, we propose three new species of Epeus (Epeus daiqini sp. nov. (♂♀), Epeus pallidus sp. nov. (♀), Epeus szirakii sp. nov. (♀)) and two new species of Ptacasius (Ptocasius metzneri sp. nov. (♂♀) and Ptocasius sakaerat sp. nov. (♀)). Additionally, we redescribed E. tener (Simon, 1877) and added photographs of morphological characters. The genus Ptocasius is redefined due to the inclusion of 37 species, previously included in Yaginumaella Prószyński, 1979. Relationships and distribution of both genera are discussed in reference to molecular, morphological and distributional data, published by other authors in recent years. It is based on both original data and published data dating from 1861 to October 2000. Northern Asia is defined as the territories of Siberia, the Russian Far East, Mongolia, northern provinces of China, and both Korea and Japan (Hokkaido only). The catalogue lists 216 valid species belonging to 41 genera.
