Science College, Patan, Gujarat-384 265 Abstract: A preliminary study of spiders was carried out in June 2012 to July 2013 from five sites around Biosciences, Vallabh Vidyanagar. As the results of collected spiders, total 90 species belonging to 66 genera spread over 24 families are recorded from five sites of Vallabhvidyanagar. The dominant family Araneidae had the highest number of species (18); followed by Salticidae (13), Thomisidae (10) and Tetragnathidae (7), Oxyopidae (5). Most of the other families had less than 5 species. This small region has detected more than 5% of Indian spiders. Keywords: Spiders, diversity, Anand, Gujarat 1. Custom Trip Report The Central Chinese province of Sichuan provided some notable challenges this year: still recovering from the catastrophic “Wenchuan 5.12” earthquake of 2008, the area is undergoing massive reconstruction. All very positive for the future of this scenically extraordinary Chinese region, but often a headache for tour arrangements, due to last minute traffic controls leading us to regularly rethink our itinerary in the Wolong area in particular, that was not far from the epicenter of that massive quake. Even in areas seemingly unaffected by the quake, huge road construction projects created similar challenges to achieving our original planned itinerary. However, in spite of regular shuffling and rethinking, the itinerary went ahead pretty much as planned with ALL sites visited. Other challenges came this year in the form of heavy regular rains that plagued us at Wawu Shan and low cloud that limited visibility during our time around the breathtaking Balang Mountain in the Wolong region. With some careful trickery, sneaking our way through week-long road blocks under cover of darkness, birding through thick and thin (mist, cloud and rains) we fought against all such challenges and came out on top. -

Rovněţ bych chtěl poděkovat Lence Sentenské, Evě Líznarové, Pavlovi Šebkovi a Stanovi Korenkovi za podporu a cenné rady všeho druhu. 3 ABSTRAKT Koexistence a rozdělení niky pavouků rodu Philodromus V této diplomové práci byl zkoumán mechanismus umoţňující koexistenci mezi Philodromus albidus, P. aureolus a P. cespitum. Studie probíhala na území významného krajinného prvku U Kříţe v Brně Starém Lískovci. Studované území se skládá ze třech typů biotopů: listnatý les, křoviny a monokultura švestek. Pavouci byli získáváni pomocí sklepávání. U zkoumaných druhů byly porovnávány různé dimenze niky. Prostorová nika byla zkoumána na základě mikro- aţ makrobiotopových preferencí. Trofická nika byla zkoumána na základě velikosti a typu přirozené kořisti a pomocí laboratorních experimentů potravních preferencí. Časová nika byla zkoumána na základě fenologie jednotlivých druhů. Studované druhy se lišily v prostorové a trofické nice. -

Acknowledgements 1. Summary Laojunshan Nature Reserve is located at Yibin city, Sichuan province, south China. It belongs to eastern part of Liangshan mountains and is among the twenty-five hotspots of global biodiversity conservation. The local virgin alpine subtropical deciduous forests are abundant, which are actually rare at the same latitudes and harbor a tremendous diversity of plant and animal species. It is listed as a Global 200 ecoregion (WWF), an Important Bird Area (No. CN205), and an Endemic Bird Area (No. D14) (Stattersfield, et al . 1998). However, as a nature reserve newly built in 1999, it is only county-level and has no financial support from the central government. Especially, it is quite lack of scientific research, for example, the avifauna still remains unexplored except for some observations from bird watchers. Furthermore, the local community is extremely poor and facing modern development pressures, unmanaged human activities might seriously disturb the local ecosystem. We conducted our project from April to June 2007, funded by Conservation Leadership Programme. Two fieldwork strategies were used: “En bloc-Assessment” to produce an avifauna census and ecological assessments; "Special Survey" to assess the conservation status of some threatened endemic bird species. -

Filistata fuscata Nakatsudi, 1943 (Filistatidae), is taxonomically revised and redescribed with topotypical speci- mens newly obtained. Nakatsudi is regarded as the only author of the name, contrary to the hither- to treatments in the catalogues as Kishida, 1943 or Kishida in Nakatsudi, 1943. Filistata fuscata Kishida, 1947, validated on the basis of Kishida (1947) as its original description is regarded as a junior homonym and synonym of Filistata fuscata Nakatsudi, 1943. After a careful assessment of characteristics, the species is transferred from the original genus into Tricalamus Wang, 1987, and a new combination Tricalamus fuscatus is proposed. Two new species of the genera Clubiona La- treille, 1804 (Clubionidae) and Athamas O. Pickard-Cambridge, 1877 (Salticidae), are described from Koror Island of Palau under the names, Clubiona jaegeri sp. nov. and Athamas proszynskii sp. nov., respectively. Summary Sichuan is a marvellous part of China with spectacular scenery, fine food and wonderful wildlife. We had a rich variety of mammals and birds on this trip. Mammals included Red Panda, Golden Snub-nosed Monkey, the endemic Chinese Desert Cat, Pallas’s Cat on two days, including during the daytime. The “golden fleece animal” –Takin never fails to attract the regular attention of cameras. A good range of bird species, including several endemics, was also recorded and one lucky group member now has Temminck’s Tragopan on his list. Day 1 Saturday 9th November The Cathay Pacific flight from Heathrow to Hong Kong had its usual good selection of films and decent food. Day 2 Sunday 10th November The group of three from London, became seven when we met the others at the gate for the connecting flight to Chengdu the following morning. Unfortunately, the flight was delayed by an hour but we had the compensation of warm, sunny weather at Chengdu where we met up with our local guide Sid. After a couple of hours of driving, we arrived at our hotel in Dujiangyan. -

(Araneae, Araneidae) collected in central and western Spain is described and illustrated. Its novel status is confirmed after a thorough revision of the literature and museum material from the Mediterranean Basin. The taxonomy of Araneus is complicated, but both morphological and molecular data supported the genus membership of Araneus bonali Morano, sp. n. Additionally, the species uniqueness was confirmed by sequencing the barcode gene cytochrome oxidase I from the new species and comparing it with the barcodes available for species of Araneus. A molecular phylogeny, based on nuclear and mitochondrial genes, retrieved a clade with a moderate support that grouped Araneus diadematus Clerck, 1757 with another eleven species, but neither included Araneus bonali sp.
