F I R S T M E D I A Design Management Paper A CASE STUDY: TIFFANY & CO. PREPARED BY: TAN PEI LING DAPHNE TAN SHU MIN Introduction Tiffany & Co. (henceforth referred as “Tiffany”) is America’s premier purveyor of jewels and time- pieces, as well as luxury table, personal and household accessories. Founded in 1837 by Charles Lewis Tif- fany, Tiffany’s design philosophy has been based mainly on the central tenet that “good design is good busi- ness”1. All Tiffany’s designs are presented in the Tiffany Blue Box, recognized around the world as an icon of distinction and a symbol of the ultimate gift to celebrate life’s most joyous occasions. Today, the company’s 100 plus boutiques in 17 counties continue the company’s tradition of excellence2. This paper consists of several segments: (1) brief history of Tiffany; (2) organizational structure of the company; (3) marketing and product attributes; (4) target audience; (5) the unique selling proposition of its products; before concluding the paper. Brief History of Tiffany: 1837, Tiffany & Young is established Tiffany & Co. is a U.S. jewellery and silverware company founded by Charles Lewis Tiffany and Teddy Young in New York City in 1837 as a “stationery and fancy goods emporium.” The store initially sold a wide variety of stationery items, and operated as Tiffany, Young and Ellis in lower Manhattan. The name was shortened to Tiffany & Co in 1853 when Charles Tiffany took control, and the firm’s emphasis on jewel- lery was established. Tiffany & Co. has since opened stores in major cities all over the world.

A diamond is made to be worn, admired, and enjoyed. This fact alone makes the jewelry in which a diamond is set important. Jewelry can contribute to a diamond’s appeal in other ways as well. Like a crystal vase holding a rose, a setting of fine jewelry enhances the beauty a diamond creates and the pleasure it gives. Tiffany & Co. Announces Tiffany True: A New Engagement Ring Design and Innovative Diamond Cut | 1 Meet Tiffany True, the new Tiffany & Co. engagement ring that’s destined to become another icon of the house. With a contoured diamond cut that maximizes brilliance, light and contrast—the ring adds a new contemporary design to Tiffany & Co.’s legendary engagement collection—a collection that includes, most notably, the world-famous engagement ring, the Tiffany® Setting—a six-prong setting that has become a universal symbol of love and commitment. Tiffany True enhances this legacy and provides a new representation of love today—adding geometric lines and ultra-fine details to make this ring a modern masterpiece. “Tiffany has symbolized the ultimate in love and commitment since 1886 with the invention of the original Tiffany® Setting. Now, the launch of Tiffany True with its unique setting and expert cut, we are introducing a supreme expression of modern love,” says Reed Krakoff, Tiffany & Co., chief artistic officer. The Cut Of the four Cs—clarity, carat, color and cut—three are determined by nature. Only one, the cut, is created by human hands and our artisans make the difference. Regardless of its other properties, an expertly cut diamond comes to life in a truly sparkling way, catching light and radiating brilliance with every move. For this new style, Tiffany & Co. leveraged its unique diamond cutting expertise with an innovative cut, debuting this September. Named Tiffany True for its genuine ability to captivate, this new fancy-cut diamond exposes more surface area on the diamond’s main facet, enhancing its luster through heightened contrast and dispersed light.

17-2798-cv (L) Tiffany, et al. v. Costco UNITED STATES COURT OF APPEALS FOR THE SECOND CIRCUIT August Term 2019 (Argued: January 21, 2020 Decided: August 17, 2020) Nos. 17-2798-cv, 19-338, 19-404 –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– TIFFANY AND COMPANY; TIFFANY (NJ) LLC Plaintiffs-Counter-Defendants-Appellees -v.- COSTCO WHOLESALE CORPORATION, Defendant-Counter-Claimant-Appellant –––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––––– Before: LEVAL, RAGGI, and LIVINGSTON, Circuit Judges. Tiffany brought suit against Costco under the Lanham Act and New York law, alleging that Costco was liable for, inter alia, trademark infringement and counterfeiting in connection with its sale of diamond engagement rings identified by point-of-sale signs containing the word “Tiffany.” Though Costco does not dispute that Tiffany has a valid, registered trademark for the word “Tiffany,” it argued before the district court that it was using that word in a different, widely recognized sense to refer to a particular style of pronged diamond setting not exclusive to rings affiliated with Tiffany. It therefore claimed that its use of the 1 term was not likely to confuse consumers—the essence of a claim for infringement—and that even if some degree of confusion was likely, it was entitled under the Lanham Act to the descriptive fair use of an otherwise protected mark. The district court (Swain, J.) granted summary judgment for Tiffany, holding that no reasonable jury could credit either of Costco’s arguments and further concluding that Costco’s infringement constituted counterfeiting as a matter of law. Following an advisory jury trial on the question of damages, the district court awarded Tiffany Costco’s trebled profits along with punitive damages and prejudgment interest, for a total of $21,010,438.35.
