Mostly those of the philosopher and mathematician Norbert Wiener. With the focus on the relation and communication between the player/human and the videogame/machine/computer. How the a.i-characters through Uedas games develop more and more liberties of being their own individuals, free from the player-characters full control, and how this effects the gameplay and players relation to the machine and his/hers interaction with them. It shows that through the evolution of Uedas a.i-characters, players learn to adapt more to the demands of a computer, and the digitally generated world. And using the communication made available by videogames, is able to adjust to these artificial creatures requirements, just as if they were real beings. Toolbox Creativo Para El Game Design De Un Videojuego Independiente

Analysing the history of game controversies Faltin Karlsen Norwegian School of Information Technology Schweigaardsgate 14 N-0185 +47 90 73 70 88 [email protected] ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to discuss some of the controversies that have surrounded digital games. Within media studies, such controversies are often referred to as moral panics or media panics. They are understood as cyclical events that arise when new media or media phenomena are introduced into society. The paper’s point of departure is the controversy that erupted after the launch of Death Race in 1976, which initiated the first world- spanning debate concerning digital games and violence. Similar debates followed the launch of games like Doom and Mortal Kombat. More recent controversies about game violence have erupted specifically in the wake of school shootings. My analysis shows that, while these debates certainly share similarities, they also undergo important transformations over time. Via a historical perspective, I will demonstrate the importance of these changes to our understanding of the status of digital games in society. Keywords moral panic, media panic, game violence, media regulation, media history INTRODUCTION The concept of media panic is often invoked when public controversies arise around digital games or other media. A media panic is a heated public debate that is most often ignited when a new medium enters society. Concern is usually expressed on behalf of children or youth, and the medium is described as seductive, psychologically harmful, or immoral (Drotner 1999). While media panics tend to revolve around new media, slightly older media, like newspapers and television, are where these concerns are expressed. -

Examensarbete on the Development of an Educational Math
Fakulteten för teknik och samhälle Datavetenskap Examensarbete 15 högskolepoäng, grundnivå On the development of an educational math game En studie i skapandet av ett lärandespel i matematik Sebastian Hovenberg Ehab Okal Examen: Kandidatexamen 180hp Handledare: Mia Persson Huvudområde: Datavetenskap Andrabedömare: Gion Koch Svedberg Program: Spelutveckling Datum för slutseminarium: 2016-04-14 Abstract There are many different ways to implement learning activities in the modern educational system as seen in schools nowadays. But in an era rapidly being digitized, the educational system has possibly not really managed to catch up or succeed in implementing these digitalization’s in a meaningful and effective way. This inability to digitize has been growing more prevalent by each passing year with droppings in mathematical performance, as shown in the latest result for the tests carried out by PISA [1]. Out of this enlightenment, the Swedish government set out funding research projects in order to understand and examine the reasons behind this drop. But this study will not focus on the PISA result. In this study, we investigate whether educational games could be an answer to negate or halt these dropping in performance. In particular, the main aim of this study is to design and implement an educational game centered on solving mathematical problems in a new way not often seen in educational games, by implementing design choices mostly seen in highly developed video games. The results of this study show that there is some evidence that confirms that more highly developed games could be an excellent way of learning and possibly also the next evolution in the educational system seen in schools. -
In the Nature of Cities: Urban Political Ecology
In the Nature of Cities In the Nature of Cities engages with the long overdue task of re-inserting questions of nature and ecology into the urban debate. This path-breaking collection charts the terrain of urban political ecology, and untangles the economic, political, social and ecological processes that form contemporary urban landscapes. Written by key political ecology scholars, the essays in this book attest that the re- entry of the ecological agenda into urban theory is vital, both in terms of understanding contemporary urbanization processes, and of engaging in a meaningful environmental politics. The question of whose nature is, or becomes, urbanized, and the uneven power relations through which this socio-metabolic transformation takes place, are the central themes debated in this book. Foregrounding the socio-ecological activism that contests the dominant forms of urbanizing nature, the contributors endeavour to open up a research agenda and a political platform that sets pointers for democratizing the politics through which nature becomes urbanized and contemporary cities are produced as both enabling and disempowering dwelling spaces for humans and non-humans alike. Nik Heynen is Assistant Professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. Maria Kaika is Lecturer in Urban Geography at the University of Oxford, School of Geography and the Environment, and Fellow of St. Edmund Hall, Oxford. Erik Swyngedouw is Professor at the University of Oxford, School of Geography and the Environment, and Fellow of St. Peter’s College, Oxford. Questioning Cities Edited by Gary Bridge, University of Bristol, UK and Sophie Watson, The Open University, UK The Questioning Cities series brings together an unusual mix of urban scholars under the title.
