Richt was named the University of Miami’s 24th head football coach on Dec. 4, 2015. His hiring provided immediate dividends as the Hurricanes posted a 9-4 record in his first season in Coral Gables. Miami then defeated West Virginia, 31-14, in the Russell Athletic Bowl for the program’s first bowl victory in 10 years. The Hurricanes were ranked No. 20 in the final Associated Press poll and No. 23 in the final Amway Coaches Poll – the program’s first season-ending rankings since 2009. Miami had 10 players earned ACSMA All-ACC honors in 2016, while quarterback Brad Kaaya became Miami’s all-time passing yards leader. Freshman wide receiver Ahmmon Richards broke the 31-year-old freshman receiving record at Miami originally set by Michael Irvin, while sophomore running back Mark Walton became the 11th 1,000-yard rusher in program history. Six Hurricanes were selected in the 2018 NFL Draft. Nine Hurricanes were selected in the 2017 NFL Draft, the most for Miami since 2006, including first-round pick David Njoku to the Cleveland Browns. Richt has had 99 of his players drafted as a head coach, including 14 first-round picks. Richt, born in Omaha, Neb., and raised in Boca Raton, Fla., returned to his alma mater after leading the University of Georgia football program for 15 years.

Morgan was unable to assist at the clinic due to a knee injury but came later to the event to speak to the younger players, urging them to believe in themselves and their abilities. “Did I think that this would actually happen? I’m not sure. But I had the dream when I was 7, my mom believed in me, my family believed in me and that encouragement helped me become who I am today,” Morgan said after being asked by a player at the clinic if she always believed she would play professional soccer. Morgan and Rapinoe’s personal and professional growth was also discussed in-depth at their evening talk. Moderator Catherine Remak, from the radio station K-LITE, brought up their experiences playing high school and college soccer; Rapinoe played for the University of Portland and Morgan for UC Berkeley. Rapinoe joked about her experiences getting “walloped” as a high school player who was “never on a winning team.” But she admitted that the experience of losing led to growth, stating how “even at this level, we’ve had some really tough losses in our career and you can’t let that define you.” Both captains discussed some of the difficult defeats they’ve endured, referencing their loss to Japan at the 2011 FIFA World Cup on a penalty shootout in overtime as an example.

Yet their professional aspirations can be significantly affected by the departure of their college coaches, whose team's recurring success often results in lucrative offers from professional teams or wealthier and more suc- cessful college programs. Although the potential harm to a university left behind by an upwardly-mobile coach is often recognized, less at- tention has focused on the connection between a coach's departure from the university and the student-athlete's standing in the National Football League ("NFL") draft. A recent study has demonstrated that a coach's decision to leave a university can substantially lower an ath- lete's position in the draft.'
