These are the sorts of debts that can never be repaid, only acknowledged. As the editors of the Journal de Guienne figured out over two hundred years ago, sometimes the only way to repay people for their help and kindness is to put their names in print. What follows, then, is a litany of good deeds, selfless acts, and all of the exceptional people who have helped me at every step of the way with no thoughts of reward or recompense. Please consider this all too brief run-through a down payment on the interest. First and foremost my advisor Dena Goodman has been this projects biggest supporter. She has seen this dissertation through from its bare bones beginning as an independent study paper to the form that it is in today. Whether in Baton Rouge, San Francisco, or Ann Arbor, over wine or beer, Dena has always been there for me with incisive comments, words of encouragement and, in the true spirit of les Lumières, pointed criticism. Whatever merits this dissertation possesses, it is largely on account of her tireless efforts. Louisiana State University provided me with grants and awards that have made my work possible. Jane McLeod knows more about booksellers and printers in eighteenth-century Bordeaux than anyone else I know. As a result, she had to endure a never-ending stream of emails, which she did with more patience than I deserved. I would also like to thank the many librarians, both in France and the United States, who have helped me with my research. The staff at Michigan State University's special collections library was particularly helpful and provided a friendly environment to do research. In France, I was expecting the worst, but found the new Bibliothèque iii Nationale a very agreeable place to do research. The staff there was first-rate and knew exactly what I was looking for even if I didn’t. The Bibliothèque municipale, Archives municipale, and Archives départmentales in Bordeaux all proved to be excellent and fruitful places to work and conduct research. I also need to thank the many people who helped me maintain a balanced perspective while completing my dissertation. In Bordeaux, Charles Knippenberg, Paul Craig, and Dick Turpin provided me with much needed shelter, succor and libation. I owe a special word of thanks to Paul Craig, who never failed to remind me that there is a time to work and a time to play. On a personal note, I would like to thank my parents for their love and support over the long haul, and for never ceasing to pose that immortal question: when are you going to be finished? Some questioned the sanity of bringing Sage and Denver to France but it ended up being one of the sanest decisions I ever made. Because of them I spent more time in the Bois de Vincennes, on top the Dune du Pyla, and on the beaches of Arcachon then I otherwise might have. I also learned that the gendarmes weren’t joking about bringing dogs into Père-Lachaise. Finally, to Dort, without whom nothing is possible. Combining the histories of the press, provincial life, and the public sphere, this dissertation explores the ways in which the affiches became an indispensable part of local economic, cultural, and intellectual life while at the same time articulated a world view that was antithetical to the tenets of monarchical absolutism. The first part of the dissertation focuses on the origins, form and contents

The latter half of the sixteenth century was a critical period for the French monarchy. Great noble families attempted to re-establish their feudal power at the expense of the crown. Francis II and Charles IX, kings who were merely boys, succeeded strong monarchs on the throne.     Exoticism and the Jew: Racine's Biblical Tragedies by Stanley F. Levine pour B. Ponthieu [The Comedie franchise production of Esther (1987) delighted and surprised this spectator by the unexpected power of the play itself as pure theater, by the exotic splendor of the staging, with its magnificent gold and blue decor and the flowing white robes of the Israelite maidens, and most particularly by the insistent Jewish references, some of which seemed strikingly contemporary. That production underlies much of this descussion of the interwoven themes of exoticism and the Jewish character as they are played out in Racine's two final plays.] Although the setting for every Racinian tragedy was spatially or temporally and culturally removed from its audience, the term "exotic" would hardly be applied to most of them. With the exception of Esther and Athalie, they lack the necessary 'local color' which might give them the aura of specificity.1 The abstract Greece of Andromaque or Phedre, for example, pales in comparison with the more circumstantial Roman world of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar and Titus Andronicus, to say nothing of the lavish sensual Oriental Egypt in which Gautier's Roman de la Momie luxuriates. To be sure, there are exotic elements, even in Racine's classical tragedies: heroes of Greco-Roman history and legend, melifluous place and personal names ("la fille de Minos et de Pasiphae"), strange and barbaric customs (human sacrifice in Iphigenie). Despite such features, however, the essence of these plays is ahistorical. Racine's Biblical tragedies present a far different picture. Although they may have more in common 52 STANLEY F.

Focused on popular sovereignty, representation in government, and public control of state finances, the paper shows how documents from America and Britain reinforced radical political arguments in France that would ultimately undermine the absolutist old regime. These texts, circulated legally in newspapers and the state-run periodical Affaires de l’Angleterre et de l’Amérique, communicated numerous arguments in favor of populism and public action to French readers.     Changed Borders, Changed Nationalities Border, Belonging, and Circulations in the Pyrenees during the Modern Period Alexandre DUPONT ABSTRACT Traditionally considered as being fixed since the seventeenth century, the French-Spanish border was nevertheless the subject of a slow and difficult process of demarcation throughout the nineteenth century. The difficulties can notably be explained by the complex social reality of a long-crossed border, as well as a cross-border organization that local inhabitants refuse to abandon less out of a refusal of national construction than a defense of a socioeconomic system based on an open border. Traditionally, the historiography for the French-Spanish border has considered it to be one of the world’s oldest, or in any case as one of the longest defined separating lines, seemingly stable since the Peace of the Pyrenees in 1659, which consecrated France’s annexation of Roussillon. This border has apparently shifted very little since then, with the exception of events such as the departmentalization of Catalonia and its addition to the France of 130 departments under the First Empire (1812-1814), a departmentalization that was never made official.
