Catholic Schools Week 2016 National Catholic Schools Week (02/01/16 - 02/05/16) is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. Throughout the week, students will participate in Masses, events, and discussions that will celebrate their Catholic faith. Activities include writing cards to our veterans, responding to a Morning Meeting topic regarding each day’s theme, and many more fun events along the way! See reverse side for our Catholic Schools Week itinerary. In keeping with our Catholic Schools Week theme of being a community of service, we will be collecting items for the Midnight Run. The Midnight Run program provides food, clothing, and comfort to the homeless of our city. For more information please visit www.midnightrun.org. Below is an outline of the items we are asking our students to consider donating. Nursery, Pre-K, and Kindergarten Travel size toiletries: soap, shampoo, hand lotion (which is especially needed during the winter season), toothpaste, toothbrushes, deodorant, baby powder 1st – 4th Grade Winter clothing (all men’s sizes): sweatpants, sweatshirts, long thermal tops and bottoms, socks 5th – 8th Grade Outerwear: men’s jackets, gloves, hats, scarves, fleece blankets Other optional items to consider for donation include: Breakfast/granola bars, Pop Tarts, peanut butter, jelly, plastic sandwich baggies Continued page 2 Monday, February 1st, 2016: In Our Community… • Buddy Story Day! Come to school in your pajamas! (Guidelines on Page 3) o Upper grade students will volunteer to read stories to the lower grades • Donate at least $1 toward C.H.I.P.S. (Christian Help in Park Slope) o Our goal is to raise $1,000 for CHIPS which would cover three months rent and utilities for a young mother and her child or provide the CHIPS soup kitchen with 600 meals • Meet and Greet the SSCA Board of Directors o SSCA Lower Level at 7:00 PM Adults only! Tuesday, February 2nd, 2016: In Our Students… • Open School Day for in-house parents 9:00 – 11:00 AM • Get Up & Move Day! o Music will start playing randomly throughout our school day for students to take a dance break! • Free Dress Up Day! (Guidelines on Page 3) o Dress your best for your special day! • No homework in honor of our students as well as a delicious treat to eat! Wednesday, February 3rd, 2016: In Our Nation… • National Appreciation Day for Catholic schools • School Spirit Day! o Wear your uniform or your SSCA Spirit Wear with pride! • Valentine’s Day letters to our Veterans o An SSCA family is working with the FDNY to distribute Valentine’s Day goodies & cards to VA hospitals in the area. Students make cards to soldiers, sailors, marines, airmen, etc. to help in this effort. • 1st – 8th Grade Mass in honor of our faculty, staff, and volunteers Thursday, February 4th, 2016: In Our Vocations… • Saint Displays: Each classroom will ‘Adopt a Saint’ and make a small display providing information, art pieces, etc. about their saint. Students will have the opportunity to visit these displays. • Priest visits from the Diocese of Brooklyn and Vocations Office o They will meet with students from 1st – 8th Grade to discuss what vocations are and what their vocations may be Friday, February 5th, 2016: In Our Faculty, Staff, and Volunteers… • Mystery Teacher Day! o What better way to have a deeper appreciation of our teachers than by having a Mystery Teacher come to your class for a period! • Crazy Mixed Up Clothing Day Dress Down! (Guidelines on Page 3) page 3 Catholic Schools Week Dress Down / Dress Up Guidelines Monday, February 1st, 2016: Pajama Day • Must have top and bottom, no pajama dresses • No tank tops • All bottoms must go past the knee • All footie/onesie pajamas must be worn with shoes • No slippers • Logos must be appropriate Tuesday, February 2nd, 2016: Dress Up Day • Show off your Sunday best! • No costumes Friday, February 5th, 2016: Crazy Mixed Up Clothing Day Here are just a few ideas... • Fancy clothes mixed with gym clothes • Mismatched socks • Polka dots and plaid • It's up to you and your imagination! .
