5 Jul 2013 Descendants of Anderina MOUAT Page 1 drinking water due to the intense shelling, mud and dead stock. Early on the troops had seen farmers and peasants collect water from ditches. The locals seemed immune to this practice, but when the troops did the same they went down like flies with all the usual water-borne diseases. Strict warnings followed and the troops were thirsty a lot of the time. Hence it was of paramount importance for the Engineers to locate village wells and clear them of garbage and rubbish dumped in by the retreating Germans, or repair them when they had been blown up. Location: Steenwerck is a village on the D77 about 6 kilometres south-east of Bailleul, and to the east of the road from Bailleul to Estaires. The Cemetery is situated to the north-east midway between the village and

5 Jul 2013 Descendants of Anderina MOUAT Page 3 the main road from Bailleul to Armentieres and north of the recently built motorway. Historical Information: Steenwerck village remained unharmed during the greater part of the War' but on the 10th April 1918, in the Battles of the Lys, it was captured by the enemy, and it remained in their possession until the beginning of October. The site was chosen for the 2nd Australian Casualty Clearing Station in July 1916, and the original Cemetery (Plot 1 and the earlier rows of Plot II) was made and used by that hospital until April 1918. Trois-Arbres passed into German hands a day later than Steenwerck, after a rearguard defence by the 34th Division. A few further burials were made in the Cemetery after the German retirement at the end of 1918; and after the Armistice graves were brought into it from the battlefields of Steenwerck, Nieppe, Bailleul and Neuve-Eglise. There are now nearly 2,000, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, over 400 are unidentified and special memorials are erected to nine soldiers from the United Kingdom and one from Canada, known or believed to be buried among them. Certain graves in Plot III (indicated by the words on the headstones "Buried near this spot") are identified as a group but not individually. The Cemetery covers and area of 5.935 square metres and is enclosed by a concrete curb. The following graveyards were concentrated into Trois-Arbres Cemetery:-. DOUNE CEMETERY, NEUVE- EGLISE, at the Custom House on the road from Neuve-Eglise to Nieppe, containing the graves of 15 soldiers from Canada and four from the United Kingdom who fell in 1915-16. FORTRIE FARM CEMETERY, NEW-EGLISE, 1.6 kilometres West of the hamlet of Le Romarin, containing the graves of 27 soldiers from the United Kingdom who fell in November and December 1914. FACTORY CENETERY, BAC-ST. MAUR. This was a row of graves in Steenwerck commune, in the angle formed by the river Lys, the road from Bac- St. Maur to Croiz-du-Bac, and Edwards's Linen Factory. In it were buried 20 soldiers from the United Kingdom, on from India and seven Germans."

Leonard and Jean had the following children: 10 F i. Ngaire GREEN. Ngaire married Charles WILLIAMS in , New Zealand. 11 F ii. Dorothy Henrietta GREEN1,2,3,4 was born on 27 Mar 1918 in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. She died on 22 Feb 2012.

Received from Michael Broad on 25 Feb 2012 by e-mail. Dear Family, A day or so ago Rodger Smith phoned me to advise that his mother Dorothy had died in the night of Wednesday 22 Feb. not quite 94 years of age. Rodger was Dot’s second son, and she was the second daughter of Leonard Green, first child of Henry and Anderina. And she was my friend and greatly

5 Jul 2013 Descendants of Anderina MOUAT Page 6 respected cousin. Dorothy was a fearless and forthright woman, as shown in her mountaineering and trekking worldwide as in Peru and the Himalayas. Later she became an inveterate voyager on the high seas, but not in large cruise liners. She was chosen as a crew member by Dr David Lewis for a scientific Antarctic expedition on the 18 metre steel yacht “Solo” in 1977-78. During that trip she became one of the very few to set foot on the Balleny Islands. Dot was chosen by David for her ice experience, her cold weather endurance and because she was “as hard as nails”. Next came one leg on the 1911 schooner “Tradewind” of the “Sailing Home” voyage of sailing ships, being the 1987-88 Bicentennial Re-enactment of the 1787 First Fleet of convicts from London to Sydney. Then in 1989 Dorothy was again on “Tradewind” voyaging to New Zealand’s Sub- Antarctic Islands; skirting past the Snares but spending time on Campbell and Auckland Islands. At times this was a stormy passage as expected, but relieved by the rewarding experience of being at close quarters with the wildlife. Again in 1992 Dot was sailing one leg, Puerto Rico to Boston, of a trip “Tradewind” was making from New Zealand. The vessel was about to take part in the Cutty Sark Tall Ships Regatta to Liverpool that year. Dorothy will be missed of course, but the memories will be with us for ever. It was a wonderful privilege to have known her. Michael Broad.

It is interesting that in 1990 Stan Durry was slip-master with the then Otago Harbour Board and the 'Tradewind' was up on that slip in 1987, at which time he took two photographs of her - one at the wharf and one when she was on the Big Slipway where he worked. It was a winters morning, and quite possibly just before she set sail for the event mentioned above in Mike's letter. Stan is a distant cousin in the 2nd family of Richard Driver.

Dorothy married John SMITH in 1945 in , New Zealand. John was born in 1917 in Lower Hutt, Wellington, , New Zealand. He died in May 1974 in Green Lane Hospital, South Auckland, New Zealand.

OCCUPATION: John was employed as a Sheep & Cattle farmer near Taukau.

5 Jul 2013 Descendants of Anderina MOUAT Page 8 BIOGRAPHY: Citation for Honorary Degree for Jack Beale THE AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL UNIVERSITY CANBERRA JACK GORDON BEALE CITATION FOR AN HONORARY DEGREE Mr Chancellor, it is my privilege to present to you for a degree of the University, the Honourable Jack Gordon Beale. Jack Beale has made many outstanding contributions, not only to Australian society, science and technology, resource development, environmental management and culture, but also to societies elsewhere in the world over his long and illustrious career. These contributions, made as a distinguished consulting engineer, a member of parliament, a minister in the NSW government, and as an enterprising company director, have been characterised by innovation, creativeness, energy and vision. Jack Beale's professional qualifications are in mechanical, electrical, civil, agricultural and biological systems engineering. He has worked as a consulting engineer in more than 60 countries over a period of 56 years. His work on water conservation and agricultural engineering in India from 1952 to 1959, was credited by India's former Prime Minister, Pandit Nehru, as saving millions of people from famine through the concept of "drought proofing". A concept which he also applied in Australia, leading to the expansion of the irrigation industry and the establishment of the first privately owned network of hydropower generators, which is currently reducing Australian greenhouse emissions by 170.000 tonnes a year. Following his election as the Member for the South Coast in 1942, Jack Beale became one of the youngest Members to be elected to the NSW Legislative Assembly. He was a tireless worker for increased employment and economic opportunities for the South Coast. He initiated in 1972 the first truly integrated, interdisciplinary resource survey, with emphasis on human activities, in Australia: the study with CSIRO of the Clyde River Valley. He served with distinction as NSW Minister for Conservation from 1965 to 1971. From 1971-1973 he was the first Minister for the Environment anywhere in Australia, and was also Minister assisting the Premier and Treasurer. As Minister for Conservation, he administered the largest ever resources construction program in NSW. His Ministerial roles were characterised by innovations in environmental management. For example, he commissioned the River Catchment Studies which collected, for the first time, resource data on 32 major river catchments in NSW. He introduced systematic charging for irrigation water and was responsible for the first specific allocations of water to the environment in the, Macquarie Marshes, 25 years before environmental flows became fashionable. He was one of the few Ministers for water resources anywhere in the world who was capable of designing, building and operating the dams and related works for which he was responsible. The NSW legislation relating to Clean Air, Clean Water, Waste Disposal, Pollution Control, Soil and Forest Conservation, and the National Parks and Wildlife Service were all initiated by Jack Beale. These were pioneering in Australia. He formulated the first guidelines for environmental impact statements in the world in 1971. Nationally, Jack Beale was an outspoken champion and foremost advocate of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme. He was instrumental in establishing the

5 Jul 2013 Descendants of Anderina MOUAT Page 9 Australian Water Resources Council, the Australian Forestry Council, the National Flood Mitigation Scheme, the National Soil Conservation Program, the National Conifer Planting Program, the National Water Resources Development Program and the Australian Environment Council. Jack Beale served with distinction on the Commonwealth State Ministerial Councils for Water Resources, Forestry, and Agriculture between 1965 and 1971, and for the Environment from 1971 to 1973. Internationally, Jack Beale was from 1974 until 1977 a senior, part-time adviser to the United Nations Environment Program and also to it Environment Program. He undertook some of the first United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) Advisory Missions to help many countries especially developing countries, such as , Venezuela, the , and , with national environmental institution building. Jack Beale was a ranking Australian delegate to the water for Peace Conference held in Washington in 1967 and to the United Nations' Conference on the Human Environment in Stockholm in 1972. Jack Beale's motto throughout his long professional career has been 'today's research is tomorrow's practice'. He has been an initiator, champion and active supporter of water and related resources research in Australia. He initiated the Water Research Foundation of Australia in 1955, and has been its executive chairman since that time. The Foundation was the first, and remains the only, non- government, non-profit, wholly community-based Research Institute that searches for solutions to Australia's critical and unique water and related land resources problems. The Foundation has funded more than 300 research projects. Jack Beale was instrumental in establishing the Jack Beale Chair of Water Resources at this University in 1989 and, through the Foundation, initiated the Annual Jack Beale Water Resources Lecture in 1990 as part of the ANU Public Lecture Series. Time does not permit to detail Jack Beale's many other, noteworthy contributions to the community. Jack Beale is an Australian visionary, who has had the dedication, courage and energy to bring his visions to fruition, to the benefit of Australia. Jack Beale's detailed understanding of the unique Australian environment, his policy and project initiatives, aimed at providing resource security and livelihoods for Australians, while protecting that environment, and his unabated support for the research necessary to use those resources wisely, are exemplary. Mr Chancellor, it is with great pleasure that I present to you Jack Gordon Beale, that you may confer on him the Degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa, on the ground of his distinguished creative contributions in the service of society. Gladys married Leonard Frank BROAD son of Alfred Carter BROAD and Martha OSBORNE on 23 Dec 1924 in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. Leonard was born on 28 Dec 1894 in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. He died on 17 Jul 1978 in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand. They had the following children: 26 F i. Shirley Andrina BROAD was born on 11 Jun 1926 in Dunedin, New Zealand.

LIVE: 1997, Inglewood, West Coast, Wellington, New Zealand.

Shirley married John David SMITH on 20 Dec 1947 in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. John was born on 2 Feb 1926 in Timaru, Canterbury, New Zealand. He died5 on 14 Aug 2011 in Huntly, New Zealand. He was buried on 18 Aug 2011 in Cremated, Huntly, New Zealand.

John was a senior teacher at Kaikorai High School, Dunedin, in the 1970's.

27 M ii. Michael Osborne BROAD was born on 2 Nov 1929 in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand.

In my five years at secondary school, Otago Boys' High School, we had Army Cadet Training once a week. I never took part in any " normal" cadet training as I was in the School Bugle Band as a bugler for the whole time. [During that period I was also a bugler in The Boys' Brigade.]At holiday times Dad had always taken me rabbit shooting, and later I was on my own with a . 22 single shot bolt action, so was conversant with rifles. Then one day during my fourth year we were all bundled into Army trucks and taken to a range, where without much palaver that I can recall, we were allowed to blast off at targets. This was with Service Lee-Enfields with small-bore tubes fitted. All great stuff at the time, and with absolutely no sense of competition at all!!Many months later, one morning when I got to school boys started to slap me on the back about something I knew nothing about; evidently there was something in the paper! And then came the full turnout of the school in uniform for the Area Commander. I just felt totally embarrassed marching up through the ranks and shaking in my shoes for the presentation.

5 Jul 2013 Descendants of Anderina MOUAT Page 20 Michael married Patricia Gweneith THOMAS "Tricia" daughter of Arthur Eric THOMAS and Murial Emma MOORE on 29 Jan 1952 in Auckland, New Zealand. Patricia was born on 7 Feb 1931 in Dargaville, New Zealand.

Tricia was the daughter of Arthur Eric and Muriel Emma THOMAS and she spent her early life on her father's pioneer dairy farm in the far North of New Zealand. Arthur's father, John Thomas had emigrated from Cowbridge, Glamorgan, settling in Taranaki as a farmer, later moving to a place north of Auckland.. His father in turn was Llewellyn Thomas, an architect in Cowbridge. Witnesses to the marriage were M A SNOWDON and R C QUENNELL See a photo of Michael and Tricia on their wedding day here

Tricia was awarded the Queens Service Medal for her work in gymnasticsIn 2006 she qualified as an International Brevet Women's Gymnastic Judge in gymnastics and this story about her appeared on the net:It is often said that age has no barriers and never was a truer word spoken than in the case of Patricia Broad who at 75 attempted and passed the WAG FIG judges brevet examination at the recent New Zealand International Judges course. Initially Tricia had only planned to requalify as a Senior National judge but when everyone was told they all had to sit the brevet exam to gain any qualification she decided to challenge herself and see how well she could do. Her result was not a surprise to those who know her and it was a fitting reward for someone who has given many years to the sport of gymnastics in many different ways. According to a source in her home town of Dunedin, "Tricia was very determined and every day she would go for a walk and would be seen all over the town, head down learning from her little study cards". So with Tricia does NZ have the oldest (first time) brevet in the World - FIG are unable to confirm this but until someone proves otherwise we will believe so. Tricia, you are an inspiration and role model to us all.

28 F iii. Robin BROAD was born on 28 Aug 1932 in Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. Robin married John Ernest GRUNDY on 20 Oct 1973 in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand. John was born on 18 Aug 1925 in Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand.

8. Lillian Margaret GREEN (Anderina) was born on 8 Jun 1894 in New Zealand. She died6,7 on 21 Apr 1983 in Company Bay, St Leonards, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. She was buried on 25 Apr 1983 in Purakanui, Otago, New Zealand.

Lillian's memories of life in Purakanui Mrs Lillian Middleditch: recalls Mr Hugh Fogo going floundering at weekends and on Sunday morning they all had flounder for breakfast. This was when there still were hundreds left in the in the Bay. Frequently he would leave many flounder in boxes out in deep water, until they were wanted. Mullet used to come into the Bay in shoals, but now trawlers go out about 4 a.m. - little in the bay now. There were butterfish - see Butterfish Point, and ribbonfish, pipis at the beach and cockles in the bay, mussels, oysters, pauas at Goat Island (Mapoutahi). Her first job was in Archie Fullerton's shop which was at the turn-off to Hayward Point where Mrs

5 Jul 2013 Descendants of Anderina MOUAT Page 21 Fullerton and she worked while he rode to Port Chalmers each day to work in his other shop there. Sometimes Lil and Cyril walked to Port Chalmers, though sometimes they went by train. In 1908 she was dux at Purakanui School. The whole school went to the Exhibition in Christchurch, 1906 or 1908, where they saw their first cars and sat in the exhibits and pretended to drive them. Lucky to be at Purakanui since her mother had died when she was 3, Cyril 1 year 3 months and Edith 8 years. Lil ailed seriously and her Granny Mouat took her, within 3 weeks she was sturdier and attending school. They took butter to Port Chalmers (Port for short) and returned with a weeks groceries, bread, was sheap and they had their own eggs, milk and meat, but a butcher came out once a week with a horse and cart - a Mr Sutherland. There was a sick woman at Port for whom the doctor prescribed whisky. Each weekend the man at the Port shop would wrap a bottle for Lil to take with her groceries to Purakanui. One day the empty bottle was packed instead and when her grandmother saw this, she made her get up early on Monday morning and get to Port of foot, pick up the whisky, come out to Purakanui by train, and THEN got off to school. Granny met her at the top of the hill, halfway, to collect the whisky!!! When Mrs Fullerton was ill once, Lil looked after the shop and the 5 children, but one evening sh wanted to attend a dance at Sawyers Bay. After the dance, she and others walked home, arriving at Purakanui at 7 a.m. with a face white with exhaustion, only to have to turn to and start breakfast at 8 a. m.. John Wicks Sunday School Superintendant said "I've been teaching you all wrong" - was convinced by a roving preacher All the dairy farmers in the district sent milk daily - using a milk depot. Kids hung onto the milk trucks at the back for a free ride. Very hard for the horse drawing the wagon. Granny Mouat adopted Herole (Herbert) Mouat aged 4 and went up to Wellington for him. Jeanie (Miss Murray) remembers him coming off the train, tired, in a sailor suit. On Labour Day there were trains every half-hour, double-header engines, 2 guards vans, 3 porters, written tickets to Palmerston and the hundreds of picnickers got off at Purakanui and took off shoes and socks. Most walked walked across the Bay. Also the New Years Day races..... There were races for children and boat races. They also tied canoes and smaller boats toa motor boat when motors were still a novelty, and went across at high tide to the bar and back. Hugh Murray played the bagpies at the front of the boats, and people played banjoes, etc., guitars, tin whistles and mouth organs galore. Gilbert and Granny Mouat had a mondy and a parrot. They were left with Granny when Gilbert went off on marine survaeys. Hugh Murray said that the monkey wore a waistcoat and was often chained by the fireplace. He recalls how fastidiously it ate a plum. Mrs Forgie ( Elizabeth Driver) used to get young pigs to rear from Double Hill. She used to leave early in the morning, took all day along the railway line, or if the tide was out, would wade through the water by Goat Island.....????? She used to walk to the Port on Saturdays carrying eggs, and butter to sell. Sometimes she got a ride to there with the Longs. Miss Chrissie Long went to the Haywards Point School. She was later dux at the Lower Harbour School. In those days everybody was called by "proper" names, the correct title, for example, 'Miss Jones if the eldest daughter, or 'Miss Elsie' if a younger daughter. A man would be 'Mr Jones', his eldest 'Mr Edward' and a younger son 'Master Paul'. Chrissie Long had to work hard like a man, two sisters only. They made butter from the milk of 30 cows which they had to bring in to be milked by hand, then take the milk to the creamery. They were frowned upon if they made their own butter though as it took away from a town industry. Mr Forgie had the Purakanui creamery for years. Mrs Dick Driver (Richard jnr) cleaned the school to help rear her 8 children. She was a registered

5 Jul 2013 Descendants of Anderina MOUAT Page 22 midwife, but about the 1900s a Doctor was required instead of a midwife, so she was done out of a job, unless the event went to fast for the Doctor to arrive from the Port. About 1000 sheep were required to make a farm ecconomic once the bush was cleared off the land at Haywards Point. Catherine Long, who became Mrs Fred Driver once had to milk the cowas with her sister, but got a rash from that, so she turned to sewing and became the local dressmakers. After the marriage her sister, Chrissie, had too much work to do so the married sister still did their sewing. She bought good materials so they would last a good while. The Salvation Army ladies came out for harvest Festival and Self Denial collections. Driver's wife and boys used to attend the Salvation Army church in the 1880s. (Maria, Drivers first child (later Granny Mouat) was Roman Catholic as she was baptized by a vicar of Bishop Pompelior, then later by Creed of the Methodist Church). Driver never sent his shildren to school until compulsory education can in. He taught them himself, including Maraea and his second wife Elizabeth who couldn't read or write. He retired when the harbour pilot needed an engineer's licence in 1864, at which time he bought the farm the final formalites completed in 1865. Lillian said that it was hard going to school - exhausted when they got there and past learning and when home again still the chores to do. Helen Stuart nee Hislop recalls making kelp shoes and bouncing balls over at Goat Island, taking home mussels, cockles and large sole to eat. Out at the head of Mouats Bay they could get flounders with a nail on a stick. She was taught by Elizabeth Hislop (her mother) to row at the age of four years, while her mother sat and watched her go round and round, and while she sat did some mending. Elizabeth recalled that while in her late teens her brothers kept race horses. Even after a race they were still spirited. Gran said 'No more' so the boys brought home an old horse which cost 30 shillings ($3 in todays money) to keep it for a friend. It was not much use for anything else and was put out to grass. Two days later, out of flour, sugar, with visitors coming unexpectedly Lizzie was told by Granny to saddle up the horse and go to the store. Side saddle with a kitbag, large floppy hat, and horse took off across sand and uphill, three miles altogether. She couldn't get off the horse for fear she couldn't remount, so she called out her wants to the storekeeper who handed out the good, then she took off home again. Her brother later asked "Why did you take my Horse?" then added "Dangerous - it won a big race last week - very fast!" To get to Dunedin it was a 3 mile walk to the station, of it the tide was in, punt to the bridge below the station and harry directly uphill. People used to give Granny Mouat lovely presents for her goodness, including helping runaway sailors whome she hurried inside, fed, made them sleep in front of a good fire if necessary, and was sure they had somewhere to go to, with more supplies to take with them. "She could make a good meal out of almost next-to-nothing, but there was always plenty, fish, fruit, jam, eggs, and girdle scones for all. She had so many vases given to her, of beautiful china, for example, that she gave them to anybody for presents, wedding etc. Otago Miscellaneous Cemeteries Name MIDDLEDITCH Lillian Margaret Date 21 Apr 1983 Place

5 Jul 2013 Descendants of Anderina MOUAT Page 24 man she was married to for 62 years. Her husband Norman died at Windsor Park Rest Home in Gore on January 22, aged 87. Patricia, 88, still smiles at the time he made newspaper headlines by unwittingly sparking a major security alert during a visit to the resort in September 1999 by Bill Clinton, then President of the United States. Police swooped on the couple’s home at Speargrass Flat Road near Lake Hayes, after a man was spotted carrying a firearm. It was no sniper – it was Norman embarking on his daily rabbit shoot on his property. “Police came to the door demanding to know where he was and they had a helicopter flying above the house,” recalls Patricia. “Norman had been out hunting with his dog and he told the officers that if he was going to try and kill the President, he doubted he’d take an old labrador with him.” The couple wed in Dunedin in 1946 and moved to Queenstown almost 30 years ago after Norman retired from his job as curator of the city’s Botanic Gardens, where he’d worked for 42 years. He was well known to locals for his keen sense of humour and liked to visit the New Orleans Hotel in Arrowtown for a drink and a chat with friends. Norman served as a private in the army for five years during World War II and was stationed in Egypt and Italy. “He always said he ‘never killed any bugger’ because he’d always shoot to the side,” says Patricia. “When he was in Italy, he and his comrades would play cards with the German soldiers at night then fight them in the morning.” Norman outlived two of the couple’s five children and was a loved granddad of 10 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. His life was celebrated at a private family service in the garden of his home.

http://www.textiles.org.nz/betty/index.html Betty Fraser passed away in January 2004. This project profiles the textile works of Betty Fraser. It provides galleries of images

5 Jul 2013 Descendants of Anderina MOUAT Page 25 of Betty Fraser's work including her wool murals and her silk paintings. It also presents some of her early paintings. Born in 1927 at Balclutha, Betty Fraser studied at Otago University in Dunedin, graduating with a BA. She then trained as a Primary School Teacher at Dunedin Teachers' College and specialised as an art teacher. She taught art and art history at various Otago secondary schools for over 25 years as well as being the mother of seven children. She has Ngai Tahu ancestry from Otakou, Dunedin. She exhibited with the Otago Art Society and was an artist member of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts. Early Works Betty Fraser started working with fabric in the 1960's producing a number of works using applique and featuring machine embroidery. Initially she used a domestic sewing machine. By the 1970's she used an industrial embroidery machine. Many of her works also incorporated hand embroidery, in particular needle weaving. She also incorporated batik and felting as well as knitting and crochet. The use of knitting machines was to became a feature of her large wool murals. Wool Murals From the late 1970's to the early 1990's Betty Fraser carried out many commissioned projects. Her wool murals decorate both private and public buildings. These wall hangings are padded knitted collages with hand-embroidery, mostly in the form of needle weaving. The largest piece is in the Mosgiel Civic Centre and is 5.5m long and 2m high. It depicts the Maori legend of the Taieri taniwha or water monster. Other works are housed in the Otago University, the Taieri High School, the Clutha County Council Office, the Balclutha Social Welfare Office as well as at Otago Girls' High School, Dunedin. Silk Paintings Betty Fraser began to paint on silk in the late 1980s through to the mid 1990s. Still life with flowers was her preferred subject matter as she felt the brilliance of flowers is enhanced by the clarity of the dyes used.

5 Jul 2013 Descendants of Anderina MOUAT Page 26 teacher. Her early works featured here are oil paintings and water colours. She commonly worked with still-life and landscape. By the 1960's Betty started to produce fabric pictures using a domestic sewing machine to applique layers of fabric. She primarily worked in a pictorial way, often producing 'still-life' works, as well as portraits, images of 'mother and child' as well as number of images of animals and birds, as featured here. She drew inspiration from the Cubist works of Picasso and Braque as well as the from the paintings of Cezanne, Matisse, Dufy, Rouault and Chagall. The photograph of Betty at her machine with five of her children was taken for an article in the Women's Weekly featuring Betty's fabric pictures, taken in about 1961. The group is set around the sewing machine because the focus of the article was that Betty was using it to create her artwork. Because of the fragile nature of fabric, very few works have survived from these years. The close ups images of the still-life work featured in the image gallery show the use of applique techniques with zig-zag stitching around the edges. In addition Betty 'drew' with a darning foot attachment which allows the machine to be manipulated with a free line, without the constraints of forward and reverse. The machine embroidered cat is from about 1968 and is an example of the many fabric pictures completed by Betty during the 1960's and 1970's. The surface work is 'drawn' with the darning foot of her domestic sewing machine. The applique rooster is from about 1975 and combines batik in the background with machine embroidery. It is lightly quilted with a dacron backing. At this time Betty was working full time as an art teacher and produced many artworks combining batik and embroidery. She had a dedicated studio set up with an industrial chain stitch sewing machine. She also worked with knitting machines to produce garments and later incorporated knitting in her large wool murals. Betty Fraser passed away in January 2004. Betty Fraser is one of the artists profiled on this site in the PROFILES <../profiles/index.html> section. This more in- depth study of Betty Fraser was the first to be added to this site. Betty worked and exhibited for over fifty years with the majority of her work from the 1960's onwards using a wide range of textile processes. In 1999 I borrowed a series of photograph albums from my mother, Betty Fraser and scanned more than a hundred photographs and documents recording over fifty works of art. This included a number of articles written over the last twenty years in the local Otago newspapers as well as one from the New Zealand Listener. Along with a series of interviews with Betty undertaken in 1999, this digital collection of images has formed the basis for this project. The majority of the original photographs were taken by David Fraser, my father, but the silk paintings were documented in 1999 by my brother, Chris Fraser. http://www.otagogirls.school.nz/our-history/chambered-nautilus/ The Chambered Nautilus In 1944, the then Principal of Otago Girls’ High School, Miss Mary King introduced

5 Jul 2013 Descendants of Anderina MOUAT Page 27 “The Chambered Nautilus” as the school song. It is based on the poem of the same name by the poet Oliver Wendell Holmes and was set to music by the school’ s music teacher at the time Mr Roy Spackman. The song and the symbol of the Chambered Nautilus have since become an integral part of the school. The Chambered Nautilus is, in nature, a marine animal who soft body is partly covered with a coiled shell. A Nautilus shell contains about 30 chambers which are lined with mother of pearl. As the animal grows, its shell develops in the form of a spiral adding a new chamber to its shell each time it outgrows its old one “each new temple nobler than the last”. Each new chamber is closed at the rear, so the animal always lives in the outermost chamber of its shell. The animal doesn’t drag its shell along the sea floor but rather it sails upright in it using gases sealed in the chambers to provide buoyancy, “this is the ship which poets feign, sails the unshadowed main”. The chambers or “rooms” of the Nautilus represent the different stages of our lives and the milestones we achieve along the way. As we move from one stage to another so the Nautilus builds a new chamber and moves to that. It teaches us about doing things well, about building well and always moving forward. Mrs Betty Fraser, an art teacher at the school, designed and produced the mural of the Nautilus which hangs outside the Library. Mrs Fraser used the Nautilus shape a number of times to emphasis the growth and development achieved through education. She used masks and figures on the right hand side of the mural from the early part of girlhood and interspersed these with stylised blossoms and crocuses. The left side she saw as showing the maturation into womanhood. Today the Chambered Nautilus is just as significant as it was in 1944 when it became the school symbol. It continues to be an inspiration and important symbol to many who have passed through this school and being a creature of the Pacific Ocean, today the Chambered Nautilus also symbolises the valued links we have with other countries of the Pacific. The Chambered Nautilus NautilusNautilus wall hanging in Library foyer This is the ship which Poets feignSails the unshadowed main...The venturous barque that flingsOn the sweet summer winds, its purple wingsIn gulfs enchanted, where the siren singsAnd coral reefs lie bare.Where the cold sea maidens rise to sunTheir streaming hair. Its web of living gauze no more unfurl. Wrecked is the ship of pearl! And every chambered cellWhere its dim, dreaming life was wont to dwellAs the frail tenant shaped its glowing shell. Before thee lies revealed...Its irised ceiling rent. Its sunless crypt unsealed! Year after year behold the silent toilThat spread its lustrous coil; She left the past year's dwelling for the new.Stole with soft steps its shining archway through. Built up its idle door.Stretched in its last found homeand knew the old, the old no more.Build thee more stately mansions, Oh, my soul!As the swift seasons rollLeave thy low vaulted past. Leave thy lowvaulted pastLet each new temple, nobler than the last,Shut thee from heaven with a dome more vast; Build thee more stately mansions, Oh, my soul!Till thou at length art free. Leaving thy outworn shell, leaving thy outworn shellBy life's unresting sea.

Sources 1. Newspaper Articles about Dorothy Smith nee Green (Newspapers), New Zealand Herald, 1977 and 1978. "1977 Widow Off To See Antarctica A farmer's widow flies to Sydney tomorrow to join a summer yachting expedition in Antarctica. Mrs Dorothy Smith, who hails from Port Waikato, will turn 60 while on board the 65-foot steel ketch Solowhich, captained by adventurer David Lewis, will carry a team of scientists and a television crew on the three-month expedition. She admitted yesterday to one fear: "The height of the waves terrifies me. "I understand that the 50s are worst and by the time you get to the 60s the wind is so fierce it has flatened the waves." First Taste One of the 20 members of the Oceanic Research Foundation - formed one night a a couple of year ago when a group sat around a campfire in the Snowy Mountains - Mrs Smith is a keen skier and mountaineer. She had her first taste of ocean sailing during two weeks last year. Although sh has long been fascinated by Antartica, tourist flights to the white south held little attraction. Instead, she will be the only woman member of an expedition that will take sampes from the sea bottom, count seals, give four-yearly weather forecasts to Australia and undertake biological research. Climbed Andes She is no stranger to hardship though, as she has been on three climbing expeditions to the Andes. On this voyage she insists she will take her turn at everything from working the sails to recording scientific data.

1978 Yacht Pushes South NZPA Sydney Gale force winds and mountainous seas have forced the Sydney yacht Sola more than 320 kilometers off course as she battles her way to Antarctica. Carrying a crew of nine, including a New Zealand woman, Mrs Dorothy Smith of Port Waikato, the 13-metre racing champion was due to reach it's first landfall, the seldom visited Balemi Island, yesterday. The yacht is captained by Dr. David Lewis. The expedition which started from Sydney on December 23, plans to spend about three months on the frozen continent conducting a series of scientific experiments."

5 Jul 2013 Descendants of Anderina MOUAT Page 34 2. Herald article about Dorothy Smith nee Green (newspaper), Herald [New Zealand?], 6 Aug 1978. "Welcome Awaits Daring Grandmother The tiny Waikato community of Onewhero is preparing to welcome home one of it's most intrepid residents. Local people will be celebrating the safe return of Mrs Dorothy Smith from a three-month scientific expedition to Antarctica on the 18-metre ketch Solo. A 59 year-old grandmother, Mrs Smith narrowly escaped death during the expedition when an iceberg pierced the yacht's hull. "I wasn't frightened when I saw all that water pouring in." she said on the yachts return to Sydney yesterday. "I just thought how disappointing it was to have come all this far and not finish the expedition- and how I was not going to let death stop me getting my pension. Mrs Smith, who scaled the mountains of Nepal and Peru before embarking on the voyage to Antarctica with the adventurer Dr. David Lewis, is just as well known in Onewhero for less-daring activities. For at least 30 years she has worked with the country library service, distributing books to farming familes, and is active in amateur dramatics. Her friends in the area are now planning a lunch and possibly a presentation to welcome her home. "None of us ever expected to see her again." said an Onewhero resident, Mrs Margaret Allan. "She is a remarkable woman." A dairy farmer's widow, Mrs Smith was the only woman among an international crew of eight on the voyage, which she and Dr. Lewis planned while sitting around a campfire in the Snowy Mountains of Australia. "There were no exceptions at all, except that I was released from sail-handling duties because I have arthritis in my fingers." she said. "I went on watch with all the others and helped with the research whenever I could." Mrs Smith said she would be prepared to go back tomorrow but could not reccommend a similar trip to women unless they were fit and ready to tolerate 'extremely primitive conditions." Cramped conditions on the yacht had meant she was forced to lend her berth to other members on the crew while she was on watch. "I would have thought we would all have been sick of each other by the time we got back but it has not happened that way." Mrs Smith said. "But I did lose my cool a couple of times though." Dr. Lewis, the only other New Zealander on board and leader of the expedition, said an uncharted harbour was found during the journey. He believes he and his crew were the first people ever to step ashore at the Inlet at Sturges Island in the remote Bailenys Group. "We were suprised and excited to even find it there." he said. "There is nothing on the map to say it exists and, unless someone has been there in a helicopter, we were the first to explore it." The expedition was the maiden venture of the Oceanic Research Foundation, of which Dr. Lewis is the President." 3. Artlcle on the life of Dorothy Smith nee Green (Newspaper), 2000. "A Unique life of adventure few could match by Lois Calvert. Dorothy Smith is no stranger to the world. Since being widowed in 1974, in her late 50s, she has trekked in Nepal (three times), Tibet, Argentina, Bolivia, Peru, Ecuador, China, Mexico and Yucatan; she has driven the Silk Road from Xian to Lahore; and sailed as crew on a schooner to the Antarctic (twice), in the Pacific, and up the coast of South America to New York and Boston. And these are just the highlights. In between, fitted in somehow and a minor inconvenience, she has had both hips and both knees replaced, and a mastectomy. Born and raised in Dunedin, she moved to Wellington in 1945, where she became one of the few women

5 Jul 2013 Descendants of Anderina MOUAT Page 35 chosen to be trained in 'mens' work. As an engineer, she was part of a team working on the development of finely calibrated equipment for making machines. She met John, her future husband on furlough from the war in Europe. They married in 1945, and took up the 1500 acre re-hab farm in the hard limestone country west of Wairamarama. "No, I don't think of moving." she says, from the house she has lived in for nearly 50 years. One of her two sons now runs the farm, and she is comfortable in the stillness and immensity of the landscape around her. "I might be able to cope with Onewhero." she says. "But after taking my licence again, driving round and round Pukekohe -- well no, it's not for me." And will she be going away again? "Not like before." she says. "One of my knees is not very reliable, and it's not the kind of thing you want when you are trekking God knows where. Besides, so many of my old travelling companions have gone now. It's one of the things about getting older." But with an extensive library of pictures to remind her of all she has explored, she can travel anywhere she chooses in her imagination. He body might not be quite what it was, bur her mind is as sharp as ever." 4. Article from Unknown publication on Dorothy Smith nee Green. "DOROTHY GREEN Now Mrs. D. H. Smith, Nolans Road, Onewhero, R. D. 2. TUAKAU Unfortunately Dorothy was unable attend our D. P. L. Re-union as she had just arrived home from China & Pakistan & the 'Silk Road" a few days before & was due to go away again in 4 days time. It seems, from her letters that she leads a very busy life & and still seems to retain the tremendous enery she had during those War Years. She wrote several times & this is her story.

She was born in Dunedin on 27-03-1918 and attended Wakari {from the look of what is typed it should probably be Kaikorai] Primary School and Dunedin Technical College. After leaving Secondary School & before joining the Cominion Physical Laboratory she was employed as a Bookkeeping Machine Operator at National Distributors, Wellington (Self Help) and she was not 'Man-Possessed". She lived in a flat in Hawkestone Street, Wellingon and like the other girls selected to enter the Workshop area of the C.P.I. Dorothy had 6 monhts special training at "Wellington Tech" when they all joined the staff after the Christmas/ New Year break - 1942/3 at the new building in Gracefield Road, Lower Hutt. She was very happy to get away from office work and was assigned to the Grinding Room to work on a Surface Grinder with Jim Stewart as he Boss and says she is sorry that the names of her Grinding Room mates escape her after 55 years! She says some were good pals and others - well...... !!! She also says she really did enjoy the work there although some very intricate angles requring a trip to the Metrology Lab to project everything onto the screen turn out (she found out ages later) that the guage was only to make the angle at the top (or bottom) of a genade. Was that so important? Dorothy said she was always late for the train & when she missed it often had to bike to work from Wellington. She also recalls the various 'notables' who visited the Lab. to watch everyone at work at their " War Effort'. Amongst them were Walter Nash's son & and other Political types such as Mrs. Roosevelt who asked her if she got equal pay with the men. Dorothy was amazed for at the time she was getting exactly half her male counterpart's wages & says "I was teaching the guy to use MY Grinding Machine!" How's that for fairness. She says Bill Noble worked beside her on a Surface Grinder; Lou Aitken and another in front on Grinding Mahcines; Ian Aikman was their first foreman and Jim Stewart, the head in the Grinding Room; and as an afterthought also adds, the daffodils on the farm above 'Passion Villa" were lovely. Now the Nuclear Science Buildings cover the spot and it is gone forever!

Dorothy took an active part in all the social & sporting activities of the D.P.L and organised successful tramping, week-ends in the Tararuas, which started off several excursions into the great out-doors & many of

5 Jul 2013 Descendants of Anderina MOUAT Page 36 those trampers like Jenny, still get out into the hills for recreation.

She went on to say that she had found the skills she learnt in those War years, very handy in later life, when she made all the furniture for their bach & managed to fix most things in their home. Years later she met 'Brooky' (i.e. Mr John Booke, the big Boss) who was then a very successful boat designer (One ton). She says she does a lot of sailing as still.

She met John Smith when he returned on the First Furlough Draft & they were married in 1945. They lost their first son, but Howard was born in 1958 & Rodger in 1950. In 1951 drew a farm in the Ballot and took up residence in Wairamarama, Tuakau - 1500 acres of sheep, cattle & and now goats. John died in 1974 of lung cancer (and he never smiked) & Rodger, who had 2 years as a Farm Dacet has now taken over & runns the farm. The boys both went ot Auckalnd Grammar to board & Howard had 5 years at Lincoln - now had Citrus Farm at Kerikeri & is head farm advisor for the Rural Bank in the North. She has 3 grandsons & 1 granddaughter." 5. Warren Green (newspaper), 'Otago Daily Times', 13 May 2000, McNab Room, Dunedin Public Library, Moray Place, Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand. "MINISTER HAD LONG ASSOCIATION WITH PALMERSTON COMMUNITY. (Obituary. Warren Green, priest.) Staff Writer. Rev Warren Green was enthusiastic about many things but he had a special passion for music, especially the works of Mozart. Mr Green, who played a prominent role in the Palmerston community for more than 30 years, died recently, aged 79. At his funeral, the Dunedin-based Cantores choir paid special tribute to their friend and supporter, whom they dubbed "The Good Samaratin" by singing Bach's 'Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring'. Choirmaster, Dr Raymond White described Mr Green as a true Christian who lived his life showing gentleness, kindness, compassion, courage, friendship and charity. "He was a good priest, friend and confidante to all and even in illmess travelled from Palmerston to Dunedin most weeks for two years to say prayers, clelbrate the Eucharist and be available for each person individually." "As part of his weekly sermons for the choir, he enjoyed playing CDs and using the music, particularly that of Mozart, and with a twinkle in his eye he always found a profound theological truth to illustrate." he said. Born in 1920, Mr Green attended Wellington Boys College and was a clerical cadet with the New Zealand Railways before entering Trinity College in 1942.

5 Jul 2013 Descendants of Anderina MOUAT Page 38 He served as a Methodist minister in Huntly, Westport, Otaki, Balclutha, Dunedin (where he was chaplain at Dunedin Hospital and Palmerston. In 1981 he was Priest Assistant in the Anglican parish of East Otago and, at times, took responsibility for the Maniototo and Dunstan areas. Mr Green moved to Palmerston in 1964 as Methodist minister with chaplaincy responsibilities for the Cherry Farm group of ospitals. From 1968 to 1984 he ran a retail music business, The Music Place, while pursuing his interest in music therepy at Cherry Farm. He served two terms on the Palmerston Community Board of the Waihemo County Council and worked in the East Otago High School office. He also tried his hand at newspaper editing, producing the 'East Otago Review' singlehandedly from the 1960s until 1981. He also edited, for some years, the Otago-Southland diocesan newsletter 'The Envoy' and, in latter years, he produced 'Pulse', a personal journal of his ideas and intellectual musings. Mr Green was an industrial chaplain to the Electricity Division of the Ministry of Energy and Television New Zealand in Dunedin, a role he extended to include the Macraes gold-mining project. At his funeral Mr Green was described as "one of the family" by mine general manager len Jubber - "his sense of humour kept us going". Mr Green is survived by Ruth, his wife of 55 years and a former Palmerston librarian, and their children David and Alison." 12.
