    “‘THE PARANOIA WAS FULFILLED’ – AN ANALYSIS OF JOAN DIDION’S ESSAY ‘THE WHITE ALBUM’” Rachele Colombo Independent Scholar ABSTRACT This article looks at Joan Didion’s essay “The White Album” from the collection of essays The White Album (1979), as a relevant text to reflect upon America’s turmoil in the sixties, and investigate in particular the subject of paranoia. “The White Album” represents numerous historical events from the 1960s, but the central role is played by the Manson Murders case, which the author considers it to be the sixties’ watershed. This event–along with many others–shaped Didion’s perception of that period, fueling a paranoid tendency that reflected in her writing. Didion appears to be in search of a connection between her growing anxiety and these violent events throughout the whole essay, in an attempt to understand the origin of her paranoia. Indeed, “The White Album” deals with a period in Didion’s life characterized by deep nervousness, caused mainly by her increasing inability to make sense of the events surrounding her, the Manson Murders being the most inexplicable one. Conse- quently, Didion seems to ask whether her anxiety and paranoia are justified by the numerous violent events taking place in the US during the sixties, or if she is giving a paranoid interpretation of com- pletely neutral and common events. Because of her inability to find actual connections between the events surrounding her, in particular political assassinations, Didion realizes she feels she is no longer able to fulfill her main duty as a writer: to tell a story.

The Boundary Committee for England is a committee of the Electoral Commission, an independent body set up by the UK Parliament. The Committee’s main role is to conduct electoral reviews of local authorities in England with the aim of ensuring the number of electors represented by each councillor is approximately the same. Other duties include reviewing local authority boundaries and advising the Government on local authority bids for unitary status.     Peter Schepelern D en onde cirkel Roman Polanskis værk i retrospektiv rvom an Polanskis første betydelige film er et kort eventyr om to mænd, der stiger op af havet, bærende på et stort klædeskab, som de så går gennem verden med; da de imidler­ tid overalt kun møder afvisning, fjendtlig­ hed og vold, vender de sluttelig tilbage til havet, de kom fra. I dette svendestykke, »To mænd og et skab« (Dwaj ludzie z szafa) - som Polanski lavede i 1958, endnu mens han gik på film­ skolen i Lodz - finder man flere af de motiver, der bliver gennemgående i hans produktion. Som pessimistisk spådom om hans egen kunstneriske karriere har den dog vist sig ubegrundet. De værker, Polanski gennem en snes år er kommet slæbende med, hentet op fra inspirationens lunefulde urhav, er blevet mødt med ret så megen forståelse og entusi­ asme og står centralt både i den kritiske litteratur og i publikums bevidsthed. Hans karriere begyndte med teaterroller allerede i drengeårene, og i 1953-60 - da han gik på filmskolen - havde han roller i 11 polske film, deriblandt Wajdas »En genera­ tion«, »Lotna« og »De uskyldige trold- mænd«. I sin filmskoletid instruerede han fem kortfilm - foruden »To mænd og et skab« også diplomfilmen »Gdy spadaja z nieba anioly« (dvs. Når englene falder fra himlen) om en gammel toiletkone, der drømmer om sin ungdom. Efter et par novellefilm, af hvil­ ke »Le Gros et le Maigre« blev produceret i Frankrig, fik han i 1962 som 29-årig1 mulig­ hedfor at lave sin første spillefilm. »Kniven i vandet« (Noz w wodzie) placerede ham med ét slag blandt de vigtigste i den bølge af moderne instruktører, der manifesterede sig så originalt i mange lande i 60’ernes begyn­ delse: Skolimowski, Makavejev, Forman, Rocha, Guerra, Straub, Kluge, Oshima, Cas- savetes, Bellocchio, Bertoluccio og andre.

The Three Hares Dr Sue Andrew’s lecture on Monday 4th April 2016 on ‘The Three Hares’ attracted ninety people. Art historian Sue has collaborated with cultural environ- mentalist Dr Tom Greeves, and photographer and film-maker Chris Chapman, to research and document a motif carved on medieval roof bosses in seventeen churches in Devon. The motif of three hares running in a circle and joined by their ears, which form a triangle at the centre of the design, is a visual puzzle: although each beast has two ears, between them they have only three. The ear- liest known examples of the three hares are to be found in Buddhist cave tem- ples at Mogao, near Dunhuang, China, dating from the sixth century AD. The motif is also found on Islamic metalwork, ceramics and glass, in illuminated Christian manuscripts, stone carving, stained glass, a bronze bell and ceramic floor tiles.
