It also draws on interviews conducted by the author (and other research) between 2002 and 2007 both for the radio series and for this thesis and on the author's experience as a professional arranger in popular music working with many of the genre's significant recording artists including Paul McCartney, Ray Charles, Cher, Tina Turner, Westlife, Tears For Fears, Dusty Springfield, James Brown, Pet Shop Boys, Kylie Minogue and producers including Trevor Hom, Steve Lipson, Steve Mac and Steve Anderson. It will be argued that the role of the arranger in popular music has often been undervalued and that during a critical period of popular music history (1950-2000) arrangers played a significant part in the evolution of musical content. This thesis is, to the best of the author's knowledge, the first time (apart from the above mentioned documentary) the subject has ever been examined. The arranger is "invisible" because musical arrangers are often un-credited on record liner notes or in books or articles concerning popular music. A considerable amount of research has been necessary to determine who wrote many of the arrangements considered herein. Motown's Berry Gordy purposely kept the names of musicians and arrangers off the records because he feared others might 'poach' the trademark 'Motown Sound'. Other record labels considered the job of the arranger to be reminiscent of an earlier era, diluting the Rock 'n' Roll image of emotion and spontanaeity they wished to promote. Some producers and recording artists disliked sharing credit for their work. Motown arranger David Van dePitte told the author that arranging was "thankless and anonymous - a very service-oriented profession where others often take credit for what you've done." Arranging has therefore remained an intrinsically unseen art created by 'invisible' artists. By analyzing many recordings, revealing the techniques and concepts they have used in their work to create popular records, arrangers and their art will be made more 'visible'. 2 Theoretical and technical musical analysis will consist of the author's transcriptions of recorded music rather than original scores. In score-based classical and contemporary concert music, the composition and the performance of that composition are of primary importance in evaluating the music as a work of art. But in popular music, as Paul McCartney has explained, "The record was the thing. That was what we bought, that was what we dealt with. That was the currency of music: records.,,1 Similarly the Director of Film and Media Studies at the University of Florida, Robert B. Ray writes, "What distinguishes rock 'n' roll from all the music that precedes it. .. is its elevation of the record to primary status,,,2 and Theodore Gracyk, Professor of Philosophy at Minnesota State University, has commented, "Insofar as there can be a rock aesthetic, a general theory about rock music as an object of critical attention, I propose that it must focus on recorded music ... [and] specific recordings."? Thus in popular music, art is artefact. The process of making the artefact (the pop record) depends on many elements apart from the songwriter's composition and the artist's performance. These include the contributions of the producer, engineer and mixer (and the technology they employ), the studio itself, the musicians and singers who perform on the record and the musical arrangers who create a generic and sonic environment for the song. A record becomes a 'hit' because the record-buying public purchase large quantities of commercially reproduced copies of it. This study will propose that an arrangement can aid the listener in their comprehension of the lyrical meaning and musical structure of the song by enhancing it in a variety of ways; this in tum may inspire those listeners to purchase the recording. For example, Richard Carpenter's arrangement of Burt Bacharach's song Close To You for The Carpenters has become an enduring hit while Bacharach's own previously released version for Dionne Warwick failed to achieve success. Carpenter commented, "So it's a hit song, a hit singer and a hit arranger ... but Burt missed ... As lecturer Timothy Warner commented on my arrangements for the Grace Jones album Slave To The Rhythm (1985), "The effect of... the orchestral and choral colours is to broaden the scope of the music, offering not only a rich palette of sounds, but also opportunities to manipulate musical significance. While these sounds are often used to add timbral contrast and diversity, they are also used as icons of musical style.:" This study will therefore consider a number

    International Jazz Day 2013 Special Message

    30 APRIL: INTERNATIONAL JAZZ DAY 2013 SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM MR AHMET DAVUTOGLU, MINISTER OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS AND MR OMER CELIK, MINISTER OF CULTURE AND TOURISM Turkey welcomes the opportunity to host UNESCO’s International Jazz Day on 29‐30 April, 2013, in Istanbul. This will be the first celebration to be held outside of the United Nations Headquarters. On this occasion, we shall celebrate jazz music not only as a global language of human soul, but also that of more inclusive societies, mutually enhancing civilisations, and UNESCO ideals. Jazz music fascinated the two sons of Mehmet Münir Ertegün, the second Turkish Ambassador of the Republican era to the United States of America. Ahmet and Nesuhi Ertegün brothers co‐founded the legendary Atlantic Records together with Herb Abramson in 1947. Arif Mardin, another legendary music producer from Turkey, served along with them in the company. These three Turkish‐American jazz connoisseurs and pioneers, all born and bred in Istanbul, left an outstanding musical legacy of true global reach, spanning from the United States to Egypt and the rest of Africa via Turkey. Inspired by the lives and achievements of the Ertegün brothers and Arif Mardin, jazz music has flourished in Istanbul. This has paved the way for the Istanbul Jazz Festival, organized every year since 1994 by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts. Hence the special place of Istanbul on the global jazz map for the last twenty years. It is our pleasure to host the "International Jazz Day" which will raise awareness in the international community of the virtues of jazz as an educational tool, and a force for peace, unity, dialogue and enhanced cooperation among people.

    “My Girl”—The Temptations (1964) Added to the National Registry: 2017 Essay by Mark Ribowsky (guest post)* The Temptations, c. 1964 The Temptations’ 1964 recording of “My Girl” came at a critical confluence for the group, the Motown label, and a culture roiling with the first waves of the British invasion of popular music. The five-man cell of disparate souls, later to be codified by black disc jockeys as the “tall, tan, talented, titillating, tempting Temptations,” had been knocking around Motown’s corridors and studio for three years, cutting six failed singles before finally scoring on the charts that year with Smokey Robinson’s cleverly spunky “The Way You Do the Things You Do” that winter. It rose to number 11 on the pop chart and to the top of the R&B chart, an important marker on the music landscape altered by the Beatles’ conquest of America that year. Having Smokey to guide them was incalculably advantageous. Berry Gordy, the former street hustler who had founded Motown as a conduit for Detroit’s inner-city voices in 1959, invested a lot of trust in the baby-faced Robinson, who as front man of the Miracles delivered the company’s seminal number one R&B hit and million-selling single, “Shop Around.” Four years later, in 1964, he wrote and produced Mary Wells’ “My Guy,” Motown’s second number one pop hit. Gordy conquered the black urban market but craved the broader white pop audience. The Temptations were riders on that train. Formed in 1959 by Otis Williams, a leather-jacketed street singer, their original lineup consisted of Williams, Elbridge “Al” Bryant, bass singer Melvin Franklin and tenors Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams.

    Melissa Errico is one of Broadway's most cherished leading ladies, as well as a blossoming recording artist who has been called "the voice of enchantment" by the NY TIMES. She released her second studio CD Lullabies and Wildflowers on Mothers Day 2008. This follows her debut CD Blue Like That (Capitol Records, EMI) produced by Arif Mardin, praised as "gorgeous" (NY TIMES), and "earthy and soulful" (USA TODAY). Melissa was nominated for the Best Leading Actress Tony Award for her work in Michel Legrand's Amour, and has been recognized with the Lucille Lortel Award, six Drama Desk nominations, two Helen Hayes Awards, four Outer Critics Award nominations and three Drama League Honors. In December of 2010, she received the "Artist of Distinction" Award from the Great Neck Arts Center, recognizing her as a Long Island native who has made her home town proud. Melissa starred on Broadway as Betty Haynes (the Rosemary Clooney role) in Irving Berlin's White Christmas, and then starred off-Broadway in the Shaw play CANDIDA, for which she was nominated for a Best Actress 2010 Drama Desk Award. When only a teenager, Melissa burst upon the Broadway scene as Cosette in Les Miserables, quickly followed by a star-turn as Kitty in Anna Karenina, and then, at age 22, to raves as Eliza Doolittle in the Broadway revival of My Fair Lady. Since then, she has starred in High Society, Amour and Dracula on Broadway, and acclaimed off-Broadway plays like Major Barbara and The Importance of Being Earnest, as well as in television and film, including CBS's Central Park West and the movies Frequency and Life Or Something Like It, opposite Angelina Jolie.
