THInK B.I.G.! ALLO studio danese BIG PENSANO davvero in grande.

Difficile a dirsi.

The 475 At the Danish studio BIG they really do think that way. Thanks to profound housing units are divided into three types: traditional apartments, townhouses, architectural culture and uninhibited creativity, the large residential complexes of more suitable for families, and the more luxurious penthouses on the roof, with the outskirts of Copenhagen become the models of reference for the construction a magnificent view of the canal of Copenhagen and the natural oasis of Kalvebod of the city of tomorrow. Danish, thirty-six years old, Bjarke Ingels has quickly Fælled. Rendering of the new Danish Maritime Museum of Helsingor, conceived demonstrated an exceptional ability to achieve grand urban utopias. The first as a ramp that rises along the walls of an abandoned floating dock; the central void projects of BIG (Bjarke Ingels Group, active since 2005), have decisively connected is crossed by three bridges that connect the main exhibition spaces. utopia and pragmatism, with the clear influence of the thought and work of the maître à penser of the latest European generation, Rem Koolhaas, with whom p. 32 Ingels worked at the start of his career. Another characteristic aspect is the interest The new rationalism in the relationship between architecture and the city, and the organization of the project 3XN territory. In recent years the figure of the architect-artist has emerged, a person photos Adam Mørk who creates exceptional spaces and forms, with complete creative freedom. Zaha text Antonella Galli Hadid and Kazuyo Sejima, on opposite shores, are two exemplary protagonists Research on materials, analysis of functions and relationship with the territory of this approach. Does the fact that they are women have anything to do with it? merge in the project by the Danish studio 3XN for the headquarters of the Horten law It’s hard to say. In any case, Ingels takes an opposite road, focusing on the urban firm in Copenhagen. For a work of architecture that aims at improving sustainability role of architecture. For example, thinking about the project of the 8H superblock, and lifestyle. The suburb of Hellerup, a few kilometers to the north of Copenhagen, Ingels says: “When it has simple lines and clear ideas architecture meets with more faces the busy waters of the Øresund, the strait separating Denmark from Sweden. consensus, but on the other hand the city is alive when it is full of experiences and Once the home of the Tuborg brewery, Hellerup has found a second life as a satellite surprises. This is the paradoxical challenge: to simultaneously create simplicity area of Copenhagen, where residential complexes and office buildings coexist in and variety, diversity and coherence. In other words, to create a city inside a an environmental context rich in greenery, with a high quality of life. Here, on one single building, rediscovering the variety of the historical city. But how? By doing of the canals of the former Tuborg port, stands a new rationalist building with something that resembles a historical city”. A solution that then, in the project, articulated geometric volumes, to contain the headquarters of the Horten law takes on unpredictable features. No stylistic concessions, either on the facades or firm. The project by the Danish studio 3XN, guided by its charismatic founder in the types of the apartments and open spaces, and no traditional materials, but an Kim Herforth Nielsen, joins the headquarters of the Saxo Bank, also by 3XN, which ultramodern device, in its forms and its considerable size, that invents new forms in 2009 won the Riba International Award. The spatial development of the new and paths to revive the social relationships of neighborhoods, which have been Horten facility reflects the characteristic approach of 3XN in its style and design: sadly neglected in the economics of the modernist typologies. The challenge, which a construction of linear volumes, broken and opened to respond to needs for light only time will tell if it has been successfully met by BIG’s strategy, is to transform and exposure of the interiors. In this building, in fact, the designers have improved a gigantic complex of 475 apartments into a small, dynamic, vital city, and to make energy performance over and above national standards, by focusing on exposure the path of large, high-density complexes seem feasible once again, which in the and the performance of the materials used for the external cladding. The layout wake of frequent disasters of housing projects over the last few decades, from the of the volumes gives every office a north orientation, to prevent overheating of the Zen complex in Palermo to the Corviale to the large French projects, has seemed glass, and a view of the canal, for pleasant visuals from all the interiors. To this to be fated to undergo physical and social deterioration. 8H comes on the heels of end, the external wrapper is involved in a three-dimensional geometric game in two other experiments, also in Copenhagen, in the field of high-density housing. which the windows protrude outward, or are composed, on the northern facade, These are also innovative, provocative projects, which have met with acclaim on as diagonal cuts at different angles. The cladding of the surface was studied in a social and local level, and in terms of international attention. The first is the lengthy research that led to the creation of modules of different forms composed residential system in two blocks called VM, from the form of the two buildings, of a base in fiberglass and polyurethane foam, topped by a Travertine slab. A new created by Plot (i.e. Big + JDS, the initials of another brilliant young designer, Julien type of facing, never utilized before in civil construction, as the architect Bo Boje de Smedt), an improvement on and interpretation of the famous layout system Larsen, a 3XN partner and co-creator of the project, explains: “In our research we with a central street (the rue intérieure) deployed in the Unités d’habitation of found different references to ships and windmills, but no civil constructions with Le Corbusier. Very ingenious typologies and layouts, with 40 different types of self-bearing, insulating fiberglass parts”. The arrangement of the internal spaces apartments, as well as the astute touch of a memorable image, a crowd of aggressive features two wings for the offices that connect at a vast central atrium, whose height triangular balconies protruding over the void, suspended on a completely glazed is equal to that of the building, lit by glazing facing the canal. The four office levels facade. As Ingels puts it, “VM was a puzzle formed by apartments, while MTN is overlook the central lobby with sinuous balconies, a true space of conceptual and an artificial hill of villas with gardens”. The name stands for Mountain Dwelling visual connection for the entire building (inside, the lines are mostly curved and and indicates another superblock, on the outskirts of Copenhagen, which can continuous, as opposed to the interrupted lines of the exterior). The stairwell, boast of at least two quite stunning inventions. The first is the deconstruction of set back from the lobby, has a circular form: the various levels are connected by a colossal apartment building into the sum of the apartments, which (again with linear staircases that cross the space diagonally, in multiple directions, to create reference to the model of Le Corbusier) are transformed into villas. The second, a play of crossings seen by those who climb up or walk down. The design of the equally courageous and innovative, is the genetic mutation triggered by a large interiors is balanced to regulate, with maximum efficiency, the ergonomics of the parking area for 480 cars, which becomes an environment of great personality, work done inside, contacts among staff, exchange of information and visibility, also with spaces, materials, colors and details that make it an interior of great quality guaranteeing plenty of common spaces, the possibility of isolation for concentrating, and strong emotional impact. - Caption pag. 25 The spectacular facade in glass or for informal meetings, without interfering with other activities taking place studded with triangular balconies of the VM housing complex designed by BIG in the same area. - Caption pag. 33 The headquarters of the Horten law firm. and JDS and built at Ørestaden, Copenhagen, in 2005 (photo Nils Lund).
