TOWARD Q2: TOMORROW’S QUEENSLAND – OUR CONTRIBUTION Ambition Stadiums Queensland’s Contribution Green Stadiums Queensland promotes the ongoing use of environmentally sustainable technology across all venues. Protecting our lifestyle The installation of solar panelling on the Gold Coast Stadium will generate approximately 275,000 and environment kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity per annum, or more than twenty per cent of the stadium’s total electricity needs. The energy captured through the solar technology will be equivalent to powering around 250 homes per year.

Up to fi ve metres of full solar clear photovoltaic (PV) panelling will be installed around the inner edge of the stadium’s horseshoe shaped roof.

This will maximise the venues solar harvesting potential while at the same time ensuring it is a highly visible building element, both from the air and the ground and reducing the venues overall carbon footprint. The Gold Coast Stadium will be built using water and energy effi cient devices.

The Sleeman Sports Complex sources energy for Brisbane Aquatic Centre from landfi ll generated gas. This project reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 36,000 tonnes per year which is equivalent to removing 6,500 cars from the road or planting 3,600 hectares of trees.

Recycling programs are in place across the venues. For example, Suncorp Stadium installed 180 recycling bins at the start of the 2009 football season and by the end of year, almost 80 tonnes were collected. That’s as much as a fully loaded Boeing 737 being diverted from landfi ll.

Rain water harvesting at Suncorp Stadium, Skilled Park, the Gabba, Sleeman Sports Complex and the Queensland Tennis Centre continues to be a success. Upgrading and redeveloping the other venues to install water effi cient devices which include tanks to store water harvested off roof structures, the use of recycled water and active monitoring of water consumption.

Water consumption across Stadium Queensland’s Brisbane venues has decreased by 53.98% when compared to 2004/05 due to the water saving measures outlined above.

Reducing the impact on communities adjacent to major venues through innovative public transport initiatives. Approximately 85% of patrons attending events at Suncorp Stadium and Skilled Park use public transport to get to games.

Due to the nature and standard of the venues, Stadium Queensland positively impacts upon the lives of Queenslanders by allowing them to see and experience world class events, e.g. Rugby Union International matches, State of Origin clashes and Test Match Cricket, as well as national and international acts.
