1 LEWIS HAYDEN and the UNDERGROUND RAILROAD ewis Hayden died in Boston on Sunday morning April 7, 1889. L His passing was front- page news in the New York Times as well as in the Boston Globe, Boston Herald and Boston Evening Transcript. Leading nineteenth century reformers attended the funeral including Frederick Douglass, and women’s rights champion Lucy Stone. The Governor of Massachusetts, Mayor of Boston, and Secretary of the Commonwealth felt it important to participate. Hayden’s was a life of real signi cance — but few people know of him today. A historical marker at his Beacon Hill home tells part of the story: “A Meeting Place of Abolitionists and a Station on the Underground Railroad.” Hayden is often described as a “man of action.” An escaped slave, he stood at the center of a struggle for dignity and equal rights in nine- Celebrate teenth century Boston. Roberts All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT In the cities of Richmond, Virginia; Charleston South Carolina; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Baltimore, Maryland, this dissertation endeavors to find out what can be learned about the archaeology(s) of Black memory(s) through Africological Epistemic Visual Storytelling (AEVS); their silences, their hauntings, their wake work, and their healing? This project is concerned with elucidating new African memories and African knowledges that emerge from a two-tier Afrocentric analysis of Eurocentric cartography that problematizes the dual hegemony of the colonial archive of public memory and the colonial map by using an Afrocentric methodology that deploys a Black Digital Humanities research design to create an African agentic ritual archive that counters the colonial one. Additionally, this dissertation explains the importance of understanding the imperial geographic logics inherent in the hegemonically quotidian cartographies of Europe and the United States that sanction white supremacist narratives of memory and suppress spatial imaginations and memories in African communities primarily, but Native American communities as well. It is the hope of the primary researcher that from this project knowledge will be gained about how African people can use knowledge gained from analyzing select monuments/sites of memorialization for the purposes of asserting agency, resisting, and possibly breaking the supposed correctness of the colonial map. -

Central Massachusetts Portfolio Review Reviewer Bios Tamar Russell Brown A Tennessee native with Hungarian roots, Ms. Russell Brown’s background is in print design and letterpress printing. Her father is a bookbinder and letterpress printer in the Bowling Green, Kentucky. Ms. Russell Brown has a certificate in photography from Cumberland University in Tennessee, an associate degree in visual communication from Nashville State Technical Institute, a Bachelor of Arts in design from Rhode Island College and a year abroad at the economics university, Budapesti Corvinus Egyetem, in Budapest, Hungary. Ms. Russell Brown is the owner of Design Studio, Sitka Creations in Shirley, MA and the owner/founder of Gallery Sitka in Fitchburg Lisa Crossman Lisa Crossman, Ph.D., is an art historian and Curator at the Fitchburg Art Museum. As Curator, she oversees changing exhibitions of work by contemporary New England artists and those featured in the permanent collection. In addition to managing all operations of the Curatorial Department, she collaborates with Fitchburg State University’s faculty and students and curators of other regional museums. Prior to FAM, she worked with the Cultural Agents Initiative at Harvard University, edited and wrote for Big Red & Shiny, taught at Middlebury College and St. Michael’s College, and served as a Research Associate at the New Orleans Museum of Art. Her doctoral work and later professional experiences have solidified her interest in supporting contemporary artists and creating links among art museums, universities, and community partners. Katherine French Over the course of her active professional career, Katherine French was responsible for exhibitions at Boston University, Montserrat College of Art and Danforth Art, where she was recipient of an award for curatorial excellence from the New England chapter of the International Association of Art Critics and named Best Curator of Locally Made Art at the Boston Art Awards. -

BLACK HONORING AND REMEMBERING AMERICAN ARTISTS HISTORY MONTH ROBERT S. DUNCANSON Robert Seldon Duncanson (b. 1821 – d. 1872) was a 19th-century American landscapist of European and African ancestry. Inspired by famous American landscape artists like Thomas Cole, Duncanson created renowned landscape paintings and is considered a second generation Hudson River School artist. Duncanson spent the majority of his career in Cincinnati, Ohio and helped develop the Ohio River Valley landscape tradition. As a free black man in antebellum America, Duncanson engaged the abolitionist community in America and England to support and promote his work. Duncanson is considered the first African-American artist to be internationally known. He operated in the cultural circles of Cincinnati, Detroit, Montreal, and London. July 4, 1844 – September 17, 1907), was an African American sculptor, of mixed African-American and Native American (Ojibwe) heritage. Born free in Upstate New York, she worked for most of her career in Rome, Italy. She was the first African-American sculptor to achieve national and then international prominence. She began to gain prominence in the United States during the Civil War; at the end of the 19th century, she remained the only Black woman artist who had participated in and been recognized to any extent by the American artistic mainstream.
