  • The Poetics of Commitment in Modern Persian: a Case of Three Revolutionary Poets in Iran
The Poetics of Commitment in Modern Persian: A Case of Three Revolutionary Poets in Iran by Samad Josef Alavi A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Near Eastern Studies in the Graduate Division of the University of California, Berkeley Committee in Charge: Professor Shahwali Ahmadi, Chair Professor Muhammad Siddiq Professor Robert Kaufman Fall 2013 Abstract The Poetics of Commitment in Modern Persian: A Case of Three Revolutionary Poets in Iran by Samad Josef Alavi Doctor of Philosophy in Near Eastern Studies University of California, Berkeley Professor Shahwali Ahmadi, Chair Modern Persian literary histories generally characterize the decades leading up to the Iranian Revolution of 1979 as a single episode of accumulating political anxieties in Persian poetics, as in other areas of cultural production. According to the dominant literary-historical narrative, calls for “committed poetry” (she‘r-e mota‘ahhed) grew louder over the course of the radical 1970s, crescendoed with the monarch’s ouster, and then faded shortly thereafter as the consolidation of the Islamic Republic shattered any hopes among the once-influential Iranian Left for a secular, socio-economically equitable political order. Such a narrative has proven useful for locating general trends in poetic discourses of the last five decades, but it does not account for the complex and often divergent ways in which poets and critics have reconciled their political and aesthetic commitments. This dissertation begins with the historical assumption that in Iran a question of how poetry must serve society and vice versa did in fact acquire a heightened sense of urgency sometime during the ideologically-charged years surrounding the revolution.

Zwaan (eds), Your Fans are Waiting: An academic volume on Idol. Research for this case study was funded under ESRC (UK) Grant No. RES–186–27–0012 (2008-09): ‘The Exploitation of Television Formats: Intellectual property and non-law based strategies’. 2 Sukhpreet Singh ([email protected]) is an Associate Lecturer in Media Management and a Research Fellow at the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy and Management, Bournemouth University, UK. Martin Kretschmer ([email protected]) is Professor of Information Jurisprudence and Director of the Centre for Intellectual Property Policy and Management (www.cippm.org.uk). Martin Kretschmer was the principal investigator of the ESRC project; Sukhpreet Singh was the lead researcher, carrying out the bulk of the empirical work. The research design was developed jointly. We would like to acknowledge the contribution of Jon Wardle, Director of the Centre for Excellence in Media Practice at Bournemouth University, www.cemp.ac.uk), who (as a co-applicant of the ESRC grant) was responsible for the digital resource of the project: http://tvformats.bournemouth.ac.uk. 1 Abstract Television formats have become a major export industry for Britain and the United States (who together account for nearly two thirds of all format hours broadcast annually worldwide). Yet, there is no such thing as a television format right under copyright law. Any producer is free to develop game, reality and talent shows that are based on similar ideas.

  • Glimpses of Revolutionary Romanticism in Pashtu Literature
Fazal-ur-Rahim Marwat, PhD* Glimpses of Revolutionary Romanticism in Pashtu Literature ABSTRACT Pakhtun nationalism, with its dual goal of freedom and development, was the hallmark of Pakhtun/Afghan political thinking at the turn of the century in various forms, associations and institutions like Maktaba-i-Habibia, Maktaba-i-Herbiya Kabul and Islamia College and Edwards College Peshawar. A nationalist literary movement emerged advocating reassessment of the role of poets, writers and intellectuals in the society. The movement is seen to have worked on the adaptation of old literary forms to new circumstances and audiences. Along with other literary forms, poetry was consciously employed to promote social and political goals. In this paper, an attempt is made to highlight briefly the genesis of traits and trends of revolutionary romanticism in Pashtu literature and its major contours in the geopolitical-economic context of the entire Pakhtunkhwa. It also explores how Pashtu language and literature were born and bred in the womb of nationalist movements with various ideological cross-currents in pre-partition. The paper mainly explores how Pakhtun nationalist movements in India pushed towards revolutionary romanticism on both sides of the Durand Line. * Vice Chancellor, Bacha Khan University, Charsadda, Pakistan Journal of Social Sciences and Humanities: Volume 23, Number 1, Spring 2015 Keywords: Revolutionary, Romanticism, Bacha Khan, Pakhtunkhwa, Pakhtun, Hijrat Introduction nglo-Russian rivalry for supremacy in the area, their intrigues and advances at the turn of the 20th century, A the ties between religion, nationalism and centralized state power took strong roots in the new form of resistance to imperialism.
