Wales-Ireland Travelogue 2009
WALES AND IRELAND TRIP MAY 12 TO JUNE 4, 2009 What a coincidence! Meaningless, to be sure - but a coincidence, nonetheless. Our trip to the British Isles in 2009 began and ended one day earlier than our trip to Scotland, May 14 to June 5, 2001. (One can only hope that September of this year doesn't hold the same sort of unpleasant surprise that was visited upon us eight years ago.) OK, so I made a "small" error - we are departing two days earlier, not one. And, OK, so it wasn't much of a coincidence, was it? I mean, a real coincidence - one of excruciating consequence - occurred at the Polo Grounds in NYC on October 3, 1951 when Ralph Branca of the Blessed Brooklyn Dodgers was called in to pitch in the 9th inning and, by coincidence, Bobby Thomson of the Bestial New York Giants happened to come to bat, and, by coincidence, Mr. Branca happened to throw a pitch that the aforementioned Mr. Thomson happened to swing at, and, by coincidence, made contact with said pitch and drove it a miserable 309 feet into the first row of the left- field seats of the absurdly apportioned Polo Grounds, thus ending the Dodgers' season and causing a certain 12-year-old, watching on TV, in Brooklyn to burst into tears. Now that was a coincidence! But I digress. Tuesday, May 12 to Wednesday, May 13 Rather than leaving our car at the Seattle Airport Parking Garage (cost for three-plus weeks $468) or at an airport hotel (about $335) we decide to try the new Gig Harbor Taxi (at $95 each way, including tip). -

FORESTRY @BANGOR ALUMNI 2020 Newsletter
FORESTRY @BANGOR ALUMNI 2020 Newsletter FORESTRY @BANGOR ALUMNI 2020 Newsletter Welcome from the Vice-Chancellor I am delighted to present to you a fantastic collation of just some of the many highlights relating to forestry at Bangor University over the past two years. In many ways, forestry epitomises the spirit of Bangor University: a bold, traditional, international and dynamic university. Perhaps what strikes me most about this newsletter is the incredible achievements of our students who take such pride in, and responsibility for, their own learning through the Bangor Forestry Students’ Association. It is a very rare student society that has the ambition to successfully take on the hosting a nine-day international meeting of forestry students and professionals! In time, current students will transform into alumni and young professionals with the capacity to make hugely positive contributions to society, to livelihoods, to biodiversity and to the health of our planet. And as measured by the achievements of our many alumni from the forestry and related programmes, the bar has been set very high, providing us all with inspiration and ambition. We are indebted to alumni for their generous and unconditional support. Yours, Professor Iwan R. Davies, President and Vice-Chancellor COVER PHOTO: Nepal 2019. National Landscape Character 31/03/2014 NLCA06 Snowdonia Eryri – Disgrifiad cryno Dyma fro eang, wledig, uchel, sy’n cyd-ffinio’n fras â Pharc Cenedlaethol Eryri. Ei nodwedd bennaf yw ei mynyddoedd, o ba rai yr Wyddfa yw mynydd uchaf Cymru a Lloegr, yn 3560’ (1085m) o uchder. Mae’r mynyddoedd eraill yn cynnwys y Carneddau a’r Glyderau yn y gogledd, a’r Rhinogydd a Chadair Idris yn y de. Yma ceir llawer o fryndir mwyaf trawiadol y wlad, gan gynnwys pob un o gopaon Cymru sy’n uwch na 3,000 o droedfeddi. Mae llawer o nodweddion rhewlifol, gan gynnwys cribau llymion, cymoedd, clogwyni, llynnoedd (gan gynnwys Llyn Tegid, llyn mwyaf Cymru), corsydd, afonydd a rhaeadrau. Mae natur serth y tir yn gwneud teithio’n anodd, a chyfyngir mwyafrif y prif ffyrdd i waelodion dyffrynnoedd a thros fylchau uchel. Yn ddaearegol, mae’n ardal amrywiol, a fu â rhan bwysig yn natblygiad cynnar gwyddor daeareg. Denodd sylw rhai o sylfaenwyr yr wyddor, gan gynnwys Charles Darwin, a archwiliodd yr ardal ym 1831. Y mae ymhell, fodd bynnag, o fod yn ddim ond anialdir uchel. Am ganrifoedd, bu’r ardal yn arwydd ysbryd a rhyddid y wlad a’i phobl. Sefydlwyd bwrdeistrefi Dolgellau a’r Bala yng nghyfnod annibyniaeth Cymru cyn y goresgyniad Eingl-normanaidd. Felly, hefyd, llawer o aneddiadau llai ond hynafol fel Dinas Mawddwy. O’i ganolfan yn y Bala, dechreuodd y diwygiad Methodistaidd ar waith trawsffurfio Cymru a’r ffordd Gymreig o fyw yn y 18fed ganrif a’r 19eg. Y Gymraeg yw iaith mwyafrif y trigolion heddiw. -

'Building Conservation in Practice'
‘Building conservation in practice’ Matt Osmont, RIBA Rowen Memorial Hall 7.30 pm, Thursday 26 September 2019 All welcome…Refreshments available The Conwy Valley is blessed with many ancient buildings of national importance and we are all increasingly aware of their value to our communities, heritage and landscape. However, over the years, indifference and the application of inappropriate conservation methods have sadly degraded many fine buildings. Fortunately there is now a better understanding of appropriate technologies and a wider appreciation of the importance of good practice. In his talk Matt will tell us about modern attitudes, approaches and policy, including planning requirements, and look at some well-known local examples. About Matt:- Matt Osmont is Senior Conservation Architect at Donald Insall Associates, Conwy, a leading conservation architecture practice, where he is responsible for assessing and advising on conservation projects throughout North Wales. He is architect to the Bro Celynnin Ministry Area and has recently assessed all their churches, including the Valley churches of St Mary’s, Caerhun, St Peter’s, Llanbedr y Cennin, the Llangelynnin Old Church and St Benedict’s, Gyffin. Matt is an acccredited RIBA Conservation Architect, a Professional Examiner for the RIBA and holds a master’s degree in Sustainable Building Conservation.
