MLS as a Sports Product – the Prominence of the World’s Game in the U.S. April 8, 2021 Abstract The purpose of this Working Paper is to analyze how soccer at the professional level in the U.S., with Major League Soccer as a focal point, has developed over the span of a quarter of a century. It is worthwhile to examine the growth of MLS from its first game in 1996 to where the league currently stands as a business as it moves past its 25th anniversary. The 1994 World Cup (held in the U.S.) and the subsequent implementation of MLS as a U.S. professional league exerted a major positive influence on soccer participation and fandom in the U.S. Consequently, more importance was placed on soccer in the country’s culture. The research reported here explores the league’s evolution and development through the cohesion existing between its sporting and business development, as well as its performance. -

Educating the next generation of Leaders in Sport Management JOHAN CRUYFF INSTITUTE Academic Proposal “who better to serve the best interests of sport than someone who has the heart of an athlete?” JOHAN CRUYFF Founder 1 THE WORLD OF JOHAN CRUYFF The World of Johan Cruyff includes the following global initiatives: Johan Cruyff Institute, Cruyff Football, Johan Cruyff Foundation, Cruyff Library and Cruyff Classics, created by Johan Cruyff on the basis of his integral vision of sport and the importance to professionalize the sports industry. 2 JOHAN CRUYFF INSTITUTE JOHAN CRUYFF INSTITUTE, JOHAN CRUYFF’S ACADEMIC LEGACY Sport, management and social work are three key words in the world of Johan Cruyff and basic pillars of his legacy. His own experience as a professional football player and later as a coach and advisor led Johan to devise a plan to help athletes to enter the working world at the end of their sports career and to promote the professionalization of management in the world of sport. And thus, Johan Cruyff Institute was born, the academic legacy of Johan Cruyff. Since its founding in 2002, Johan Cruyff Institute has educated athletes, sport managers and other professionals in Sport Management, Sport Marketing, Sponsorship, Football Business and Coaching. Its expansion has been unstoppable, and it currently offers 92 programs. Today, it has 12 offices around the world, with a physical presence in Spain, the Netherlands, Peru, Mexico and Sweden, and international agents in 13 different countries. A total of 5,356 students have been trained in their classrooms in on campus courses and 4,173 in online courses. -

FOOTBALL AGENTS IN THE BIGGEST FIVE EUROPEAN FOOTBALL MARKETS AN EMPIRICAL RESEARCH REPORT FEBRUARY 2012 Raffaele Poli, CIES Football Observatory, University of Neuchâtel Giambattista Rossi, João Havelange Scholarship, Birkbeck University (London) With the collaboration of Roger Besson, CIES Football Observatory, University of Neuchâtel Football agent portrayed by the Ivorian woodcarver Bienwélé Coulibaly Executive summary While intermediaries acting in the transfers of footballers have existed since almost the birth of the professional game, the profession of agent was not officially recognised until 1991 when FIFA established the first official licensing system. In November 2011, there were 6,082 licensed agents worldwide: 41% of them were domiciled within countries hosting the big five European leagues: England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France. This research project firstly investigates shares in the representation market of players in the five major European championships. By presenting the results of a survey questionnaire, it analyses the socio-demographic profile of licensed football agents in the above mentioned countries, the business structure of their activity, the different kinds of services provided, and the way in which they are performed from a relational point of view (network approach). The analysis of shares highlights that the big five league players’ representation market is highly concentrated: half of the footballers are managed by 83 football agents or agencies. Our study reveals the existence of closed relational networks that clearly favors the concentration of players under the control of few agents. Footballers are not equally distributed between intermediaries. Conversely, dominant actors exist alongside dominated agents. One fifth of the agents having answered to our questionnaire manage the career of half of the players represented on the whole. -
