Ludovicus Blanco In the high mountains of Terra Alta (south of Barcelona) overlooking the Mediterranean Sea at 425 meters (1,394 ft.) elevation, the garnacha blanca grape was born. Today, Terra Alta is home to 30% of the world's garnacha blanca plantings. Garnacha blanca is well known in the Rhone Valley of France for making superb long-lasting white wines full of finesse and rich flavors. In France, its name is grenache blanc. The unknown and obscure territory of Terra Alta is the birthplace of garnacha blanca, and garnacha blanca shows its greatest beauty here. Located 5km south of Priorat, Terra Alta is full of valleys and rolling hills. If Priorat is full of slate, Terra Alta is full of limestone, otherwise known by wine people as "White Gold". Limestone is responsible for the beautiful minerality and delicate bright nerve that brings longevity, tension and finesse to wines made with grapes grown in this type of soil. Offering spice, body, minerality and rich flavors of thyme, fennel and a hint of honey, Ludivocus shows a pure expression of garnacha blanca from estate-owned vineyards, and is a true pleasure for the palate. WHAT MAKES THIS WINE UNIQUE?: Grown in Terra Alta, where garnacha blanca was born. Estate owned vineyards. Full of spice, body and a beautiful layer of minerals that makes the wine extremely complex. Less than 3,000 cases produced. RATING HISTORY: 2012 90IWC; 2011 89IWC; 2010RP GRAPE: 100% garnacha blanca. Vines planted in 1998. Tended in limestone soil at 425 m (1,394 ft) elevation PAIRING SUGGESTIONS: This fresh, mineral-inflected Ludovicus Blanco pairs very well with scallop risotto, swordfish sauteed in butter and wild herbs, and also a host of casual foods such as tapas, pasta with white clam sauce and fried oyster sandwiches. VINIFICATION AND AGEING: Macerated for 6 hours with its own skins and fermented at cool temperatures in stainless steel tanks PRODUCTION: 3,000 cases LOCATION, SOIL, CLIMATE: The vineyards are located a few miles southwest of Priorat, within the Terra Alta DO (Zone 5) in Catalunya's Tarragona province in northeastern Spain. In this remote region, the wine-making tradition dates back to the Romans, around the 2nd or 3rd Century. The winery and vineyards are in the town of Batea, situated at 356 meters (1,168 ft.) elevation. The soils are composed of 95% limestone and 5% clay. For climate, the average temperature from April-October is 67.3F. The hot day and warm-to-moderate night temperatures make Terra Alta a drier and warmer region than Montsant or Priorat. The low average yearly rainfall of 16.3 inches is less than in neighboring regions. TASTING NOTES Pale yellow. Aromas of lemon zest, chalk and white pepper, with a subtle floral nuance emerging with air. Dry and tightly wound, offering brisk, refreshingly bitter citrus fruit and honeysuckle flavors. SOLAR 6 GRENACHE ROSÉ IGP Cévennes Act for planet Winemaker’s note Solar 6 is a wine from organic farming certified "AB" and "Bee Friendly", a label that aims to protect bees and pollinators. In an alarming context of the increasing disappearance of pollinators, beekeepers have initiated the creation of the European "Bee Friendly" label in order to identify agricultural practices that respect the preservation of bees. The name of this range of round and fruity wines, Solar 6, pays homage to the solar terroirs of the South of France where these wines are made. It also evokes the first flight of recognition of bees, the "fireworks sun", and the symbolic number of these pollinators, 6. Winegrower’s note The plots of Solar 6 benefit from a beautiful sunshine and a terroir made of rolled pebbles which gives the grapes a wide aromatic palette. After sorting the harvest and pressing under gas, the grapes are lightly macerated during the pre-fermentation phase before being placed on fine lees in the post-fermentation phase and put into thermo-regulated vats. Tasting notes Grape varieties Endowed with a clear robe with garnet reflections, Grenache this grenache rosé has a charming nose with aromas of red fruits, blackcurrant, strawberry, basket of fruit, with a beautiful freshness. (You can catch up with the story of how Priorat began to change from an almost abandoned corner of Catalunya to a prosperous and well-regarded wine region in Priorat - worth the money and in the Priorat entry in your online Oxford Companion). Five visionaries led by René Barbier (Clos Mogador) started almost from zero, sharing the same facility to produce what can be regarded as the first great contemporary Priorat wine in 1989. They were José Luis Perez (Clos Martinet), Daphne Glorian (Clos Erasmus), Álvaro Palacios (Finca Dofí, L’Ermita) and Carles Pastrana (Clos de l’Obac). Today they are all considered stellar producers worldwide. A commemorative lunch was organised at the outstanding Caelis restaurant in Barcelona. Sadly, just four of the five were present as Carles Pastrana declined to join the festivities. But the four remaining pioneers showed a fascinating miscellaneous tasting of their wines from different vintages and explained the evolution of their wines and the region. Such wines are characterised by undesirable sensory characters described as smoky, burnt, ash, smoky bacon, medicinal and ashtray. This review summarises the knowledge about the composition of smoke from forest and grass ﬁres, describes relationships between smoke exposure of vineyards and smoke taint in wine, and outlines strategies for managing and reducing the risk to producing smoke-affected wines. The sensitivity of grapes and vines at different phenological stages to the uptake of contaminants from smoke, especially smoke-derived volatile phenols, is outlined, and the pathways for entry and metabolic transformation of volatile phenols are discussed. The potential for translocation of phenolic contaminants within the grapevine and the differences in uptake of smoke contaminants of different grape cultivars are also discussed, along with preliminary work on dose/response relationships regarding concentration and duration of exposure and subsequent expression of smoke taint in wine. The chemical basis of smoke taint in wine is described, and the relationship between volatile phenols from combustion of wood/lignin and their glycosides, and sensory panel ratings of smoke attributes in affected wines is discussed.

Montsant (Designation of Origin or wine appellation), despite being a recently created wine appellation, has years of wine-making history to its name. Wine experts and press consider it to be an up and coming region and prestigious magazines such as “The Wine Spectator” have declared it to be “a great discovery”. The quality of Montsant wines is key to their success, as too is their great value for money. The prestigious Spanish wine guide, “Guia Peñin” agrees that “the quality of Montsant wines and their great prices make this region an excellent alternative.” In the United States, “Wine & Spirits” magazine have stated that “Montsant should be watched with interest”. Montsant wines appear in some of the most prestigious wine rankings in the World and they always tend to be the best priced amongst their rivals at the top of the list. Catalunya Variety: 100% White Garnacha Vine Training: Goblet Vine Age: 50 Years Vineyard Info: The Vineyards located in the Terra Alta region in the far southwest of the Catalunya DO, west of the province of Tarragona, near the town of Gandesa. The region is perched high above the coast where the climate is an extreme Mediterranean with very low rainfall, approximately 14” per year, but with the peculiarity of a near constant presence of either the "Cers wind" (from the interior land to the sea) or the "Garbí wind" (offshore breeze). The area has a very high diurnal temperature variation. Soils are compact calcerourous clay with a very alkaline pH. Combined with very cold winters and very hot summers, all of these factors produce very special fruit. 90% of the entire world production of white Grenache is situated in the Terra Alta region, and is therefore considered an authentic and native grape variety that has a long history in the region. Vintage Info: 2012 was a dry growing season. Low rain during the year and very high temperatures turned made both harvest and vinification very complicated. It was made difficult by low acidity, over‐ripeness, and high pH. We are very proud of our Grenache blanc vineyard as this vintage really proves only the best old vineyards can make good wines even in the worst conditions. Our low production per vineyard and resistant soils allow this wine to keep full flavor and still be fresh and fruity. White fruit aromas mix with tropical fruit and floral notes to make this wine elegant and structured.

Plantings later spread throughout the rest of Spain, Europe and into the Mediterranean, including what is modern day Sardinia. After the phylloxera epidemic in the late 19th century, SU STAI NABIL I ITY many vineyards in Rioja and France were replanted to Grenache, N PRA CTICE as well as some to Grenache Blanc. Grenache Blanc is commonly used as a blender in the Old World. It is a major component in the white wines of the Châteauneuf- du-Pape and Côtes du Rhône AOCs, and is often blended with Roussanne, and even some red wines. In fact, up to 10% Grenache Blanc is permitted to be blended into the red wines of the Côtes du Rhône Villages AOC. Almost half of all Grenache Blanc plantings are in the Roussillon region; here it is blended with Roussanne, Marsanne, Viognier and Rolle. In Châteauneuf- du-Pape, Grenache Blanc is most often blended with Roussanne, Picpoul, and Clairette. It is known as Garnacha Blanca in Spain, where it is widely planted in regions including Navarra, Terra Alta, Alella, Aragon, and the Priorat. It is legally permitted in the white wines of Rioja. It is often used along with Marsanne, Roussanne, Viognier and other varietals in white wine blends in the Rhone. It is also finding increasing popularity in the south of France, in Provence / Languedoc, as a stand-alone varietal. Very little is planted in California. THE PLACE The Monterey appellation extends almost the entire length of Monterey County. Vineyards within the AVA are planted and farmed in relationship to the their distance from the cold waters of Monterey Bay. The fruit for this Morgan release is sourced from the Scheid San Lucas vineyard in central Monterey County. Here daytime temperatures reach the mid to upper 80’s but are mitigated by fog and wind drawn south from Monterey Bay. The warm days and cool evenings extend the growing season, resulting in fruit of superior flavor and balance. Budbreak at the beginning of the 2016 growing season was about 10 days earlier than normal, which also meant a somewhat early harvest at the end of the cycle. The winter/spring rainfall totals were better than 2015, but not near what the forecasters predicted. The spring and summer was mild with no extreme cool or warm periods; mildew control was a challenge throughout the season.
