  • SOLAR 6 GRENACHE ROSÉ IGP Cévennes
SOLAR 6 GRENACHE ROSÉ IGP Cévennes Act for planet Winemaker’s note Solar 6 is a wine from organic farming certified "AB" and "Bee Friendly", a label that aims to protect bees and pollinators. In an alarming context of the increasing disappearance of pollinators, beekeepers have initiated the creation of the European "Bee Friendly" label in order to identify agricultural practices that respect the preservation of bees. The name of this range of round and fruity wines, Solar 6, pays homage to the solar terroirs of the South of France where these wines are made. It also evokes the first flight of recognition of bees, the "fireworks sun", and the symbolic number of these pollinators, 6. Winegrower’s note The plots of Solar 6 benefit from a beautiful sunshine and a terroir made of rolled pebbles which gives the grapes a wide aromatic palette. After sorting the harvest and pressing under gas, the grapes are lightly macerated during the pre-fermentation phase before being placed on fine lees in the post-fermentation phase and put into thermo-regulated vats. Tasting notes Grape varieties Endowed with a clear robe with garnet reflections, Grenache this grenache rosé has a charming nose with aromas of red fruits, blackcurrant, strawberry, basket of fruit, with a beautiful freshness. This is followed by a Cévennes supple attack on the palate, with an ample, round and suave mouth. Fresh and fruity, this cuvée of Grenache rosé offers intense floral notes and mouth- watering aromas of red fruits. Narbonne Solar 6 Grenache is a rosé characteristic of the hillsides on stony and warm terroirs.

Krstic et al. Review of smoke taint in wine 537 Review of smoke taint in wine: smoke-derived volatile phenols and their glycosidic metabolites in grapes and vines as biomarkers for smoke exposure and their role in the sensory perception of smoke taint M.P. KRSTIC1, D.L. JOHNSON2 and M.J. HERDERICH2 1 The Australian Wine Research Institute,Victorian Node, Mooroolbark, Vic. 3138, Australia; 2 The Australian Wine Research Institute, Urrbrae, SA 5064, Australia Corresponding author: Dr Mark Krstic, email [email protected] Abstract In recent years, the exposure of vineyards and grapes to smoke from bushfires and controlled burn events has in some instances resulted in wines described as smoke tainted. Such wines are characterised by undesirable sensory characters described as smoky, burnt, ash, smoky bacon, medicinal and ashtray. This review summarises the knowledge about the composition of smoke from forest and grass fires, describes relationships between smoke exposure of vineyards and smoke taint in wine, and outlines strategies for managing and reducing the risk to producing smoke-affected wines. The sensitivity of grapes and vines at different phenological stages to the uptake of contaminants from smoke, especially smoke-derived volatile phenols, is outlined, and the pathways for entry and metabolic transformation of volatile phenols are discussed. The potential for translocation of phenolic contaminants within the grapevine and the differences in uptake of smoke contaminants of different grape cultivars are also discussed, along with preliminary work on dose/response relationships regarding concentration and duration of exposure and subsequent expression of smoke taint in wine. The chemical basis of smoke taint in wine is described, and the relationship between volatile phenols from combustion of wood/lignin and their glycosides, and sensory panel ratings of smoke attributes in affected wines is discussed.

  • How California's Central Coast Winemakers Are Making Grenache Their
How California’s Central Coast Winemakers are Making Grenache Their Own California didn't always produce top-quality Grenache, but these Central Coast growers are changing that by focusing on varietal bottlings to produce terroir-driven wines on par with top-shelf Pinot Noirs—but often at half the price. BY MATT KETTMANN Photo by Meg Baggott Grenache is one of the hardiest and most vigorous wine grapes on the planet. It’s a reliable backbone for traditional blends across the Old World, from France’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape to Spain’s Priorat, where it’s called Garnacha. It’s also long served a similar, if less regal, purpose in California. For decades, Central Valley growers pushed Grenache vines to their limits to produce red and pink jug wines of questionable quality. Today, however, vintners on the state’s Central Coast are shedding that baggage. They’ve optimized viticulture and dialed back the tonnage to produce varietal Grenache as nuanced and delicious as top-shelf Pinot Noir—often at half the price. Winemakers explore both the rich, ripe side of the grape, which retains acidity deep into the harvest season, as well as lighter, fresher expressions that play up oral aromatics and taut textures. But no matter where or how Grenache is grown, it retains the variety’s hallmark traits of red fruit, rose petal and cola-like spice. It offers a consistent lens to analyze the region’s varied terroirs and winemaking styles. “I rmly believe that Grenache should be the staple red of the Central Coast,” says Ian Brand, a Salinas-based winemaker who sources the grape from eight vineyards for his brands, La Marea and Le P’tit Paysan.

Lohr Gean Vineyard GEAN VINEYARD Grenache Rosé is best described as guava and GRENACHE ROSÉ passionfruit overlaid on a Paso Robles, Adelaida District palate of wild strawberry and asian pear. Serve well chilled J. LOHR VINEYARD SERIES to enjoy the crisp texture and vibrant fruit flavors. VINEYARDS This Grenache was grown at the J. Lohr Gean Ranch, which is the westernmost vineyard in the Paso - Steve Peck Robles AVA. Our planting, located in the Adelaida district, was established in 2009. The soils are a mix of DIRECTOR OF WINEMAKING calcareous shale and clay on steep slopes. Grenache clones 362 and 523 produce this aromatic rosé with the balance and intensity demanded for our limited, winery-exclusive Vineyard Series wines. VINTAGE The 2019 vintage benefited from above-average preseason rainfall providing a full soil moisture profile as the vines woke from dormancy in April. Canopy growth surged for the next six weeks, propelled by warm springtime weather, until we saw a two-week cooling period in late May. Summer temperatures rose to normal with enough daytime heat to ripen the fruit, followed by cold nighttime temperatures which preserved flavors and acidity. The vineyard required the first of two irrigations for the year on the 8th day of August, which provided enough moisture to sustain the vines until the fruit was harvested on a chilly morning in early October. With both the mind as they are for the belly and always parcels hand harvested, fermented in traditional open vats, versatile with food. Here we have a homage to and gently basket pressed, we are looking to make a complex the Spanish wines of Priorat, merging very old wine through simple methods. We retained 90% whole-berries bush vine Grenache and spicy dry grown to slow the ferment and to give delicate lift, with the balance as whole-bunch for sappy structure. We worked those ferments Carignan. very gently to preserve freshness, but allowed long maceration to build necessary tannins and complexity. Matured in a mixture of inert tanks and old french oak puncheons to provide maturation but not oak flavour. Composition Fragrant Grenache fruit provides alluring sour cherry and spicy raspberry lift, with a serious lick of dried herbs and amaro bitters from the Carignan. A balance between red scented perfume with a core of wildness, earth, and complexity buried within. The palate is long and lithe, with a depth of fruit intensity and filed nicely back by a line of sandy tannin.
