  • Divers Things: Collecting the World Under Water
Hist. Sci., xlix (2011) DIVERS THINGS: COLLECTING THE WORLD UNDER WATER James Delbourgo Rutgers University I do not pretend to have been to the bottom of the sea. Robert Boyle, 1670 matter out of place Consider the following object as shown in an early eighteenth-century engraving (Figure 1). It is a piece of wood — not a highly worked thing, not ingeniously wrought, though it is an artefact of human labour rather than a natural body. Or is it? In the engraving, the piece of wood disappears: it is visible towards the bottom of the image, a sober pointed stump, but it is quickly subsumed by a second, enveloping entity that swirls about it in an embroidering corkscrew. What elements are here intertwin- ing? The legend beneath the engraving identifies the artefact thus: “Navis, prope Hispaniolam ann Dom 1659. Naufragium passae, asser, a clavo ferreo transfixus, corallio aspero candicante I. B. Obsitus, & a fundo maris anno 1687 expiscatus.” It describes a stake or spar from a ship wrecked off Hispaniola in 1659, which is transfixed by both an iron bolt and rough whitish coral, fished out of the depths in 1687. This collector’s item is neither the cliché of exemplarily beautiful coral nor straightforwardly a historical relic, but an intertwining of the two: the “transfixing” of a remnant of maritime technology by an aquatic agent. It exhibits the very proc- ess of encrustation. The spar is juxtaposed with the image of a jellyfish, and more proximately, engravings of Spanish silver coins, also encrusted with coral: “Nummus argenteus Hispanicus … incrustatus”, one of the labels reads.1 Still another illustra- tion, in a separate engraving, bears the legend “Frustum ligni e mari atlantico erutum cui adhaerescunt conchae anatiferae margine muricata” — a piece of “drift wood beset with bernecle [sic] shells”.

In England, the mood was bellicose: the country hoped to frustrate Dutch trade to such an extent that they would be able to become the dominant trading nation. The Netherlands were attacked on land and at sea. The First War — took place during the Interregnum in England, the period after the Civil War when England did not have a king or queen. There are not enough superlatives to describe Michiel De Ruyter. Anglo-Dutch Wars series of wars during the 17th and 18 century. After negotiations broke down, St John drafted the provocative Navigation Act of October , which greatly increased tensions between the two nations. Book Description Pearson Education, During the winter and spring of , large numbers of Dutch vessels were intercepted and searched by English ships. His sister-in-law, Queen Anne would also die of Smallpox. It ended with the English Navy gaining control of these seas and a monopoly over trade with the English colonies. The bad thing about the regime change in the Netherlands was that Jan De Witt had achieved an understanding of naval warfare, while William III was totally ignorant, and remained so for the rest of his life.

  • Monitoring and Incompatible Incentives in the Age of Fighting Sail
Explorations in Economic History 39, 204–231 (2002) doi:10.1006/exeh.2002.0783, available online at http://www.idealibrary.com on The British Navy Rules: Monitoring and Incompatible Incentives in the Age of Fighting Sail Douglas W. Allen1 Simon Fraser University The British Navy during the age of sail was systematically successful against its opponents, most notably the French. This paper documents this success, shows that it cannot be explained by superior ships, training, or other naval capital, and puts forth the hypothesis that the British Navy governance structure provided better incentives to fight than those of their opponents. The hypothesis is tested by examining the structure of the rules and then contrasting them with the rules governing privateers, the army, and the navy over time. The paper concludes with a discussion of why the French did not copy the British strategy. © 2002 Elsevier Science (USA) He asked who the stout man was who had just been so ceremoniously disposed of. “He was an admiral,” they told him. “But why execute this admiral?” he enquired. “Because he had not enough dead men to his credit,” was the reply; “he joined battle with a French admiral, and it has been established that their ships were not close enough to engage.” “But surely,” exclaimed Candide, “the French admiral must have been just as far from the English as the English admiral was from the French!” “True enough,” was the answer; “but in this country we find it pays to shoot an admiral from time to time to encourage the others.” Voltaire,p.

  • Dutch Revolt
Dutch Revolt Dutch Revolt Prince Maurice at the Battle of Nieuwpoort by Pauwels van Hillegaert. Oil on canvas. Date 1566–1648 Location The Low Countries (present-day Belgium, Luxembourg, and the Netherlands) Present-day Germany (Worldwide colonial warfare) Result Treaty of Münster Independence of the Dutch Republic Recognition of Spanish sovereignty of Southern Netherlands by the Dutch Republic Belligerents United Provinces Spanish Empire Supported by: Supported by: England (1585– Holy Roman 1648) Empire France (1635– 1648) Commanders and leaders William the Silent Philip II of Spain Maurice of Duke of Alba Nassau John of Austria Frederick Henry Duke of Parma Elizabeth I James VI and I Archduke Albert Robert Dudley Ambrogio Spinola The Dutch Revolt (1566–1648)[note 1] was the revolt in the Low Countries against the rule of the Habsburg King Philip II of Spain, hereditary ruler of the provinces. The northern provinces (the Netherlands) eventually separated from the southern provinces (present-day Belgium and Luxembourg), which continued under Habsburg Spain until 1714. The northern provinces adopted Calvinism and Republicanism whereas the southern provinces became wholly Catholic again due to the expulsion of Protestants and the efforts of the Counter-Reformation and remained under absolutist rule. The Dutch Revolt has been viewed as the seedbed of the great democratic revolutions from England, to America to France.[1] The religious "clash of cultures" built up gradually but inexorably into outbursts of violence against the perceived repression of the Habsburg Crown. These tensions led to the formation of the independent Dutch Republic, whose first leader was William the Silent, followed by several of his descendants and relations.

  • Stamreeks Van Het Zeeheldengeslacht Tromp
STAMREEKS VAN HET ZEEHELDENGESLACHT TROMP door H.K. Nagtegaal en H.M. Morien Gepubliceerd in ‘Ons Voorgeslacht’ jrg. 67 (2012), blz. 41-63, jrg. 68 (2013), blz.
