Sendenb aSpace Dynamics Laboratory, 1695 North Research Park Way, North Logan, UT 84341;bRSP Technology, Metaalpark 2, 9936 BV, Delfzijl, The Netherlands ABSTRACT Aluminum mirrors and telescopes can be built to perform well if the material is processed correctly and can be relatively low cost and short schedule. However, the difficulty of making high quality aluminum telescopes increases as the size increases, starting with uniform heat treatment through the thickness of large mirror substrates. A risk reduction effort was started to build and test a ½ meter diameter super polished aluminum mirror. Material selection, the heat treatment process and stabilization are the first critical steps to building a successful mirror. In this study, large aluminum blanks of both conventional AA-6061 per AMS-A-22771 and RSA AA-6061 were built, heat treated and stress relieved. -

August 04, 2021 Mechanical metalworking: from manual to computer-based processes Just like in an ordinary kitchen, there is more to the steelmaker’s kitchen than just the processes where high temperature plays a crucial role, such as boiling, roasting or baking. Before a dish can be served, it needs additional work to make it more appealing. The same is true of metals. Prior to their use, plates, tubes, rods and complex steel castings are subject to cold forming by special metalworking machines and lathes, which become more and more sophisticated each year. History of mechanical metalworking Let’s look first into the history of mechanical metalworking and its origins. Unlike many other processes that are unique to steelmaking, some ideas related to the mechanical working of metal surfaces came from related areas. The ancient Egyptians had devices for drilling holes in stones. Wood machining equipment that later evolved into turning lathes existed in the sixth and seventh centuries BC. Yet these types of processes were not applied to metals for hundreds of years. For a long time, metal surface treatment had several restricting factors. First, it required harder tools. Second, small-batch production did not need high-precision metalworking. Third, the industrial revolution and mass production of uniform products only became a reality in the 18th-19th centuries. The third reason was a key prerequisite for the appearance of mechanical metalworking. Smiths that made goods for individual orders gave way to large industrial manufacturers and factories that had the capacity to produce large quantities of uniform metal goods. Gunsmiths were among the first to appreciate the importance of standardised metalworking. -

Do a short demo on the basics for moving the metal. Blacksmithing has a long tradition with many ways to reach the same goal. The information I’m sharing here is based on my own journey into blacksmithing and watching many beginners get started and seeing their challenges and frustrations. How do you want to approach blacksmithing? Do you want to gain experience by making your own tools or would you rather get to forging metal? Something in between? It’s good to think about this and form a game plan. It’s super easy to get bogged down in the process of making tools when all you really want to do is move hot metal. On the other hand, tons of great experience can be gained by making one’s own tools. -Outline of the basic starter kit.- •First hammer, selecting for size and shape. Build or buy? With this class we will focus on propane because it is the easiest to get started with. -

Footnotes for ATOMIC ADVENTURES Secret Islands, Forgotten N-Rays, and Isotopic Murder - A Journey into the Wild World of Nuclear Science By James Mahaffey While writing ATOMIC ADVENTURES, I tried to be careful not to venture off into subplots, however interesting they seemed to me, and keep the story flowing and progressing at the right tempo. Some subjects were too fascinating to leave alone, and there were bits of further information that I just could not abandon. The result is many footnotes at the bottom of pages, available to the reader to absorb at his or her discretion. To get the full load of information from this book, one needs to read the footnotes. Some may seem trivia, but some are clarifying and instructive. This scheme works adequately for a printed book, but not so well with an otherwise expertly read audio version. Some footnotes are short enough to be inserted into the audio stream, but some are a rambling half page of dense information. I was very pleased when Blackstone Audio agreed wholeheartedly that we needed to include all of my footnotes in this version of ATOMIC ADVENTURES, and we came up with this added feature: All 231 footnotes in this included text, plus all the photos and explanatory diagrams that were included in the text. Ltd., Chongqing 400013, China; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Received: 12 December 2019; Accepted: 25 January 2020; Published: 31 January 2020 Abstract: The three-dimensional morphologies of inclusions in gear steel 18CrNiMo7-6 forging were investigated by a non-destructive extraction method, and the cleanliness of radial positions was analyzed, mainly including the variation of total oxygen content and the distribution of size and quantity of inclusions. In addition, fatigue performance was tested using an ultrasonic fatigue machine to investigate the fatigue characteristics of the steel. The results show that the quantity density of inclusions per unit volume in gear steel 18CrNiMo7-6 decreases exponentially with increasing size, oxide inclusions with a size less than 8 µm account for more than 90%, while sulfide inclusions account for more than 85%. The average value of the oxygen content can reflect the level of inclusions that were evenly distributed in the molten steel, and the accumulative total oxygen content increases significantly with increasing inclusion size. The fatigue specimen failed after the stress exceeded the critical value, and fatigue failure hardly occurred when the stress was below the critical value. -

Gold Embrittlement of Solder Joints Ed Hare, PhD - SEM Lab, Inc 425.335.4400 [email protected] Introduction Gold embrittlement of solder joints has been written about for at least four decades [1 – 3]. Nevertheless, gold embrittlement related solder joint failures have been analyzed in this laboratory as recently as July 2009. Gold embrittlement can be avoided by careful solder joint design and knowledge of the causes of this condition. The purpose of this paper is to provide a detailed account of material and process parameters that can lead to gold embrittlement in electronic assemblies. There are a variety of reasons that designers might want to solder to gold or gold plating. One reason is that some designs involve wire bonding and soldering operations on the same assembly. Another reason would be to include gold contact pads (e.g. for dome keypad contacts) or card edge contacts (e.g. PC cards). The wire bond pads or contact pads can be selectively gold plated, but the selective plating process can be expensive. The electronics industry currently recognizes a threshold level for gold that can be dissolved into eutectic tin-lead solder above which the solder is likely to become embrittled. This threshold is ~ 3 wt% gold. It will be shown in the paragraphs below that embrittlement of solder joints can develop at significantly lower bulk gold concentrations. Metallurgical Description of Gold Embrittlement The most important soldering alloy in the electronics industry is the eutectic tin-lead alloy, 63%Sn – 37%Pb. This may change in the near future as lead-free soldering takes its hold on the industry.
