Over the course of three decades most historians familiar with the medium have recognized that American comics, since becoming a mass-cultural product in 1939, have matured beyond their humble beginnings as a monthly publication for children. However, historians are not yet in agreement as to when the medium became mature. This thesis proposes that the medium’s maturity was cemented between 1985 and 2000, a much later point in time than existing texts postulate. The project involves the analysis of how an American mass medium, in this case the comic book, matured in the last two decades of the twentieth century. The goal is to show the interconnected relationships and factors that facilitated the maturation of the American sequential art, specifically a focus on a group of British writers working at DC Comics and Vertigo, an alternative imprint under the financial control of DC. -

The writing and visuals create a lot of horror that, in turn, creates a number of intense moments. Both concepts are incredibly entertaining and are only just being Animal Man: Vol. 01, meaning there is still plenty of room to grow here. The actual story Animal Man: Vol. 01 is also great and, when paired with the artwork, excels at building suspense and interest. Anyone looking for a unique superhero story, with a twist of horror, should pick this volume up. In this volume, Jeff Lemire tells a terrifying story about the forces of death hunting down an innocent family. The book is filled with hideous monsters, creepy concepts, and tons of moments that are simply packed with suspense. Meanwhile, the events happening here are constantly contributing to a larger narrative that is sure to pay off down the road. This volume is not for the faint of heart but, if you like horror and deep concepts, this is a wonderful read. The book starts out by introducing everyone to Buddy Baker, a family man who occasionally uses his superpowers to help out his local police force. This, on its own, is a fresh concept. Most comics do not focus on characters with any sort of established personal life, so it is nice to see how the world of DC Comics affects a realistic family. -

Both are main- stays of adolescence for the past several decades, stalwarts that have survivedC the days of our youth to become mainstream entertainment for people of all ages. However, only in the past several years have their talent pools mingled, allowing for video game creations with the quality and depth of story necessary to convey the comic book experience. The Early Days The earliest comic book-based video game is 1978’s Superman, created by Atari for the Atari 2600, followed four years later by Parker Brothers’ Spider-Man for the same system. Neither games are anything to write home about, as both games feature blocky, nearly indecipherable graphics, but then again, that’s about all that was possible with the processing power of home consoles at the time. The graphics did not bother gamers, as they were happy to imagine themselves in the role of their favorite comic book heroes. -

Vertigo and the Auteur Figure
Ambiguous Authorities: Vertigo and the Auteur Figure ISABELLE LICARI-GUILLAUME Abstract: This article examines authorial performance in the context of DC’s Vertigo line. In the 1990s, Vertigo gained its reputation as an innovative and progressive imprint by promoting the work of British scriptwriters, who were hailed as true author figures, despite the inherently collaborative nature of the mainstream comics industry. In a manner reminiscent of “auteur theory”, writers such as Neil Gaiman, Warren Ellis or Grant Morrison developed attractive authorial personae which they consistently displayed through interviews, letter columns or social media, but also, more importantly, by inserting their avatars within the comics they scripted. Upon closer examination, however, it becomes clear that their work in fact simultaneously asserts and destabilizes writerly authority, in a manner that is consistent with Linda Hutcheon’s view of postmodernity. By multiplying author figures and playfully disseminating authority, Vertigo authors question their own authorial control over the text, asserting instead the crucial role played by the reader. Bio: Isabelle Licari-Guillaume is a Teaching and Research Assistant at the Department of English at Université Bordeaux Montaigne, France. She specializes in contemporary comics studies and has recently defended her PhD, which examined the British Invasion of American comics, its aeshetic evolution over time, and its influence on the editorial history of DC's Vertigo imprint. Her other fields of interest include translation and gender studies, on which she has written several articles. In 2015, she edited a collection of essays on the body in comics (Les Langages du corps dans la bande dessinée, l'Harmattan) and is currently editing another volume, Translators of Comics / Les Traducteurs de bande dessinée. -

He has been recognized as one of the top writers in the comics industry for over two decades and is acknowledged as one of its most imaginative storytellers. In his time in comics, Morrison has contributed ground-breaking and best-selling runs of popular stories for the major companies, including DC Comics – Batman, Superman, Action Comics, JLA, Doom Patrol, Animal Man – and for Marvel Comics the best-selling monthly, New X-Men, as well as Marvel Boy and Fantastic Four 1234. He has created a number of revolutionary original comic series including We3, The Invisibles, The Filth, Zenith, Sebastian O, Marvel Boy and the cult classics Kill Your Boyfriend, The Mystery Play, Sea Guy and Seaguy 2: The Slaves of Mickey Eye.
