FREE ANIMAL MAN: VOL. 01 PDF Grant Morrison | 240 pages | 01 May 2001 | DC Comics | 9781563890055 | English | New York, NY, United States Animal Man, Vol. 1 by Grant Morrison Pros: The main storyline is interesting and involves a concept that has a ton of potential. The writing and visuals create a lot of horror that, in turn, creates a number of intense moments. Both concepts are incredibly entertaining and are only just being Animal Man: Vol. 01, meaning there is still plenty of room to grow here. The actual story Animal Man: Vol. 01 is also great and, when paired with the artwork, excels at building suspense and interest. Anyone looking for a unique superhero story, with a twist of horror, should pick this volume up. In this volume, Jeff Lemire tells a terrifying story about the forces of death hunting down an innocent family. The book is filled with hideous monsters, creepy concepts, and tons of moments that are simply packed with suspense. Meanwhile, the events happening here are constantly contributing to a larger narrative that is sure to pay off down the road. This volume is not for the faint of heart but, if you like horror and deep concepts, this is a wonderful read. The book starts out by introducing everyone to Buddy Baker, a family man who occasionally uses his superpowers to help out his local police force. This, on its own, is a fresh concept. Most comics do not focus on characters with any sort of established personal life, so it is nice to see how the world of DC Comics affects a realistic family. These are deep concepts that have plenty of potential for exploration in the future and are already proving Animal Man: Vol. 01 to be interesting. While all of this is fun Animal Man: Vol. 01 compelling, the real highlight of The Hunt is the way horror is utilized. The entire story is filled with monstrous beings set on killing all life, which is a scary enough concept to begin with. However, Lemire takes this further and has the Rot physically inhabit the bodies of people they kill. It is a grotesque spectacle that is sure to elicit the chills that fans of horror enjoy. The entire time they are with the monster is nerve-racking, since you never know if or when he will decide to kill them. Situations like this amplify horror and use it to create all sorts of tension. In a book about beings made from rot and bizarre animal powers, visuals are incredibly important. Travel Foreman Animal Man: Vol. 01 a minimalist style to beautifully and effectively convey these concepts. His depictions of the Baker family look nice and feel like something readers can connect to. Meanwhile, the horrifying monsters, that also inhabit this book, clash with its otherwise peaceful nature and add additional creepiness from the contrast alone. Animal Man aka Buddy Baker was a fairly obscure character until revived by Morrison. His power — he can absorb the abilities of animals that are in close proximity, but for only a short time. He wants to be a full-fledged super-hero, but he also has responsibilities to his family. So we find him using his power to…rescue a cat from a tree. Or meat. The next self-contained issue is prime fuel for Morrison haters. In big-assed lettersthen its fair warning that Morrison is speedballing it. In a nutshell: A Wile E. Coyote wannabe is a stand in for Jesus. The rest of the volume has Animal Man inserted into various DC events. You betcha. Three and a half stars rounded up. View all 7 comments. Apr 18, Sam Quixote rated it it was ok. Me no likee! Buddy Baker is Animal Man, a dude who can temporarily adopt the powers of Animal Man: Vol. 01 animals in his vicinity. In this book, Animal Man: Vol. 01 see him get no respect as a superhero from both his family and the general public. Haw, haw… Most of this volume is made up of stereotypical superhero guff. Oh yeah and animal testing is wrong and hunters are unequivocally evil. Yes, these things are exactly this black and white! I did like the Wile E. Other than that though, Animal Man was as boring as he always is! View all 9 comments. Mar 23, David Schaafsma rated it really liked it Shelves: gn-superhero-scifi-fantasy. Vegetarians assemble! DC: That Alan Moore guy is doing something improbable, but successfully. He is resuscitating older comics readers by reviving early little known comics superheroes and making them cool, interesting, commentaries on contemporary society at the same time harking back to that old love of comics thing. And with retro fifties art! Look at Watchmen and Swamp Thing! Comics about society, comics about comics? Are there any other crazy Brit comics intellectual Vegetarians assemble! Are there any other crazy Brit comics intellectuals over there? Morrison: Uh. I guess I fit the bill. Okay, how about Animal Man, you know, Buddy Baker? DC: Stares, uncomprehending. DC: Okay, obscure, but did you have to go that obscure? That dude is Animal Man: Vol. 01. With a little bit of work I can try to make Buddy Baker hip enough for the comics aficionados! And then to stay with that theme, Morrison asserts later in the series that Animal Man is indeed just a fictional character! Morrison's is inventive and interesting and not as crazy as he can get The FilthAnimal Man: Vol. 01 as conventional and restrained as his Superman stuff. Somewhere in the middle, but I liked that. Animal Man is a really cool Vertigo pairing with Swamp Thing, finally, kind of wacky and admirable at the same time. A superhero with animal powers! The strength of a T-Rex! The speed of an ant! The agility of a snake. Vegetarians unite! Save the dolphins! I liked it quite a bit. View Animal Man: Vol. 01 22 comments. Mar 07, Sud rated it really liked it Shelves: comics.
