WELCOME ADDRESS

Dear Colleagues, Dear Friends and Guests,

We are delighted to invite you to Belgrade and Serbia for the 65th Congress of the ESCVS.

Just 40 years ago, Belgrade was the host of the 25th annual congress of the ESCVS, the oldest society in Europe in the cardiac and vascular surgical field. Belgrade is the capital of Serbia and one of the biggest cities in this part of Europe, well known for its tradition, cultural and social resources, thus becoming increasingly popular touristic destination in the recent peri- od. Charm, night life and hospitality of inhabitants are usually outlined by foreign visitors. As your hosts, we will provide you with interesting scientific program en- riched with educational workshops, scientific lectures related to both clin- ical problems and scientific topics. Some of the most controversial themes will be presented through “pro et contra” sessions by some of the most experienced physicians from the field, respecting new technologies and innovative therapies, while not forgetting conventional open cardiac and vascular surgery. Besides educational workshops, young surgeons will be able to compete for the “best young cardiac / vascular surgeon” prize based on their scientific work. In the name of the fruitful cooperation with other specialties, different joint sessions will be organized. Collaborators in ACST 2 study will endow with interesting lectures and updates from the field of the treatment of asymptomatic carotid disease. Serbian Society for Heart Failure and Working group for pacemaker of the Serbian Society for Cardi- ology will present their most interesting controversies. Different social and cultural activities will be provided to all visitors of our meeting.

The congress venue will be located at the Crowne Plaza hotel, convenient for business and pleasure alike, located in midst of the central business dis- trict, just a short drive away from Old Town and shopping area.

We hope that you will find the 65th Congress of the ESCVS in Belgrade an unforgettable event.

Congress host city - Belgrade

Welcome to Belgrade, capital of Serbia

City of many nations, BELGRADE is a city with a tumultuous, but also frequently tragic past, primarily due to its unique position at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, on the border between the East and the West. Due to its position it was rightfully named “Gates of the Balkans” and the “Doors of Middle Europe”. Belgrade is one of the oldest cities in Europe with a 7000-year history. The space around the large rivers of the Sava and Danube was already populated in the Stone Age. The Celts named the populated fortress SINGIDUNUM, where the first part of the word „Singi“ means round, and „dunum“ fortification or town. In the Byzantine Age, Singidunum became an important city of the vast empire. The Slavic name BEOGRAD (Beli grad – White City – probably because its ramparts were made of white limestone) may first be found in records from the 9th century. Belgrade flourished in 19th and 20th centuries during the reign of the Obrenovic dynasty and Karadjodjevic dynasty. It was then and it still is an important strategic point, the crossroads from the East to the West and one of the most significant cities in the Balkans.

Visitors who come to Belgrade for the first time, never leave indiffer- ent, and always come back to it with joy.

More importantly, Belgraders like everyone, so get to know Belgrade by getting to know Belgraders!
