www.vp.rs TELFA Fall Conference Belgrade 7-9 November WELCOME TO BELGRADE Belgrade is seriously old city, and it’s seen a few things… Belgrade is the capital and the largest city of Serbia. It is located at the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers, where the Pannonian Plain meets the Balkans. Due to its position it was rightfully named “Gates of the Balkans” and the “Doors of Middle Europe”. Its name translates to White city. It was called Belgrad, Bello Grado, Alba Urbs, Alba Graeca, Griechisch Weissenburg, Nándor Fehérvár, Nándor Alba, Castelbianco. All these names are translations of the Slavic word Beograd. Situated at the historic borders of eastern and western empires, Belgrade has been shaped by its history, each leaving traces as new generations continue to build and fight over this highly prized city. Unraveling the mystery and attraction of Belgrade means looking at this history, while enjoying and getting caught up in its passionate demeanor. 5 THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT BELGRADE and SERBIA HOSPITALITY Serbs are renowned for being intense, passionate, patriotic and above all else, extremely welcoming. FOOD Thanks to its original mix of eastern and western culture, Serbs can only be grateful for their great cuisine. Serbian cuisine is based on meat, but fear not vegetarians, there are plenty of great restaurants in Belgrade for you as well. COFFEE Coffee is a BIG deal here. Whether it’s domaća or turska kafa, espresso or “Nescafe”, Serbs are hooked on coffee! Coffee is for Serbia what tea is for England. The city was put on the drip after the Ottomans brought their brew with them in the 16th century, which explains why ‘domestic’ coffee, or kafa, bears a strong resemblance to what many people know as Turkish.
