Below you will find our event goals, schedule, the evaluation process, meals and lodging, parking, and suggestions for things that parents and guardians might enjoy experiencing while here in Ithaca. Event Goals: • Connect Communication Institute delegates (4-H and FFA youth), to the Cornell University campus • Connect Cornell University Communications faculty and students to 4-H, FFA, and other youth serving organizations • Strengthen local efforts around overall communication through hands-on experiences and workshops • Strengthen peer evaluation and communication skills of participating youth • Build communication skills that will help youth prepare for college and career success Partners: • 4-H Communications Institute Planning team • Cornell University Communications Department • New York State 4-H Foundation Schedule Cornell University Cooperative Extension 35 Thornwood Drive Ithaca, NY 14850 nys4-h.org The first day features workshops in two tracks; informative and persuasive communications. The workshops will be delivered by undergraduate teaching assistants and faculty from Cornell's Department of Communications. The hands-on nature of the workshops will allow youth delegates to begin to think about how to put together either a 5-minute informative or persuasive talk. Each delegate will choose one track. After the series of workshops are held the youth delegates will have time to create their 5-minute presentation and directly apply their skills and knowledge base built in the workshops. Adult chaperones are welcome to join the youth delegates for dinner. CCE Approved chaperones and CCE Staff will have paid for dinner as a part of their registration. If you are not staying in the dorms and would like to stay for dinner, please pay dining directly the $16.80 for the meal. CCE Approved chaperones and CCE Staff will have paid for breakfast as a part of their registration. If you are not staying in the dorms and would like to stay for dinner, please pay dining directly the $8.75 for the meal. During the final workshop sessions youth delegates will have five minutes to offer an informative or persuasive talk. When not presenting youth members will be engaged in a peer evaluation process and will receive comments from the evaluators as well. Finally, the team of workshop facilitators will designate a series of top performers and they will be offered the opportunity to represent Cornell University Cooperative Extension 35 Thornwood Drive Ithaca, NY 14850 nys4-h.org NYS 4-H as a 4-H Communications Ambassador until June of 2020. The Ambassadors will have an array of experiences to choose from including serving as a judge at Cornell’s spring 2020 speaking competitions. Day Two, Saturday, June 2, 2018 7:00 am Breakfast @ Jansen’s Dining Hall / Hans Bethe House 8:00 am Checkout of Carl Becker House 8:15 am Opening @ Warren Hall* 8:30 am Presentation practice* 9:00 am Presentations begin* 1:00 pm Closing presentations, Warren Hall Auditorium 1:30 pm Lunch, Warren Room 173* *Youth delegates only Registration All youth delegates, CCE approved chaperones, and CCE staff can register to attend this event. There is no prior experience required just a willingness to learn and grow. All volunteer chaperones housed in Cornell University dorms must be approved as volunteers by the local County Extension office, including the appropriate background screening conducted by the local Extension/4-H office. All participants will bring their signed code of conduct and permission forms and will be expected to abide by the expectations outlined. Registration will take place on site in Carl Becker house for those staying overnight in the dorms. NYS 4-H Code of Conduct form NYS 4-H Permission form Meals and Lodging All participants will be housed in Carl Becker House on Cornell University’s West campus. Lunch will be served at Warren Hall for youth delegates only. Saturday’s dinner and Sunday’s breakfast is open to all registered and staying in the dorms (all others have to pay the dining hall directly) Cornell University Cooperative Extension 35 Thornwood Drive Ithaca, NY 14850 nys4-h.org and will be held at Jansen’s Dining Hall inside Hans Bethe House. Thanks to the support of the New York State 4-H Foundation we are able to provide this program to youth delegates for only $50, even though the actual costs are closer to $200 per delegate. Costs for volunteer chaperones and 4-H/CCE staff are as follows: If you are an adult chaperone, you can choose to be housed with one other person or to be housed by yourself in a single room. Double occupancy fees include meals: breakfast/dinner only and the total for lodging and meals is $79.55 (Note: our registration system rounds up so you will see an $80 total). Breakdown based on double occupancy Double $54 Dinner 6/1- $16.80 Breakfast 6/2- $8.75 If you are an adult chaperone you can choose a single. Single occupancy fees include meals: breakfast and dinner only and the total is $109.55 (please note our registration system rounds up so you will see a $110 total).
