Tracy Herman Medical, Pharmacy & Health Students’ Officer [email protected] 2 020 7679 7931 DEAN OF THE MEDICAL SCHOOL

Dear Student,

On behalf of UCL’s School of Life and Medical Sciences and our NHS Partners a very warm welcome to UCL Medical School. For you this is the start of a journey that leads to one of the most fulfilling careers. You have worked hard to get here and the medical school programme will require similar commitment. We are here to help you achieve your ambitions whatever branch of medicine you aspire to enter.

Science underpins medical practice and you will be exposed to some of the brightest scientific minds. UCL is arguably the foremost biomedical research centre in Europe assuring you that your studies are informed by cutting edge discoveries. It is also one of the country’s five Academic Health Science Centres (UCL Partners), a powerful alliance between UCL, Queen Mary , our local elite hospitals and the wider health community in North Central and North East London. The medical undergraduate curriculum is closely aligned with the scientifically driven pathways of care that made up UCLP’s research themes.

But science alone is not enough; clinical skills and experience, professional awareness and practice are also crucial, and your course is designed with these requirements in mind. A major advantage of the UCL medical student experience is that you are part of a world-class multi-faculty university providing you with new perspectives and opportunities that also help prepare you for professional life. It also makes for more fun!

I wish you the very best for your time at UCL and look forward to that moment when we can congratulate you on graduating as a doctor!

Professor Sir John Tooke

As students of UCL Medical School you are an automatic member of both RUMS and UCLU. UCLU represents all students to the College and provides welfare, bars, shops, gym, volunteering and much more. See the UCLU Undergraduate Handbook or uclu.org for more details.

RUMS stands for Royal Free, University College and Middlesex Medical Students and is, constitutionally, a society of UCLU. This means RUMS is governed, funded and protected by UCLU. At the same time, however, RUMS is an executive body, which has its own identity and significant autonomy regarding its own matters, meaning it is exceptional in certain areas. As a student belonging to both, your opportunities practically double, and your experience at UCLMS is guaranteed to be an active one.

RUMS, as a society, has five main roles:

1. To represent students to the Medical School and provide feedback about the course. RUMS representatives also have an input into the welfare system provided by the medical school. 2. To represent medical students’ views within UCLU by opportunities of RUMS students holding part time or full time representative positions on the Council of UCLU. 3. To provide a platform for the RUMS clubs and societies, which cater especially to medical students. 4. To organise entertainments and events, such as Welcome Week, 4th Years, the Winter, Summer, Sports, and Finalists’ Balls. 5. To act as a channel of welfare in providing advice and support during the course of the medical degree.

So, if you think a part of the course should be changed, feel you are not being looked after, or want a party to be held, let one of the RUMS officers know and we’ll do something about it. 8 MEET THE NEW RUMS EXECUTIVE

RUMS is overseen by RUMS Executive, a board of elected student representatives, which meets every three weeks to discuss issues that emerge from the Union, Medical School or organisations like the British Medical Association. Projects are managed and plans for campaigns are made. All officers on the executive also report on what they have been doing for you between meetings.

Meet the RUMS Executive for 2013/14:

Swathi Rajagopal – RUMS President Welcome to RUMS! Along with being a part of UCL, you are part of one of the country’s greatest medical schools and all that comes with it, the sports, societies and events. Representing your voice throughout those 6 years are the RUMS Executive, a team of students just like you, so let us know your opinions and we’ll ensure they’re heard and bring in the changes YOU want. To make your experience as memorable and incredible as possible, we’re kicking off with a fabulous freshers fortnight - get involved! Looking forward to seeing you all soon!

Will Southall – RUMS Vice-President Hi Freshers! Firstly, I’d like to say a massive welcome to RUMS and well done on joining such a great Medical School. As Vice President, I will be working alongside the President and the rest of the team to ensure the smooth running of your first year at RUMS. I will also be striving to keep the Union moving forward from strength to strength. I’m certain you will absolutely love your time here; if you do have any problems or concerns, however, please feel free to get in touch with me! I’m looking forward to meeting you all at the ‘Freshers’ Fortnight’ in September.

Tom Hughes - RUMS Vice-President Events Perhaps the best way to have a memorable time at university is to get involved. Fortunately, as a UCL medical student, you have access to probably the best community at UCL – RUMS. Every year we aim to put on bigger and better events to show how strong a community we are, and this year promises to be no different. Hopefully, looking through this handbook, you’ll already have a taste of things to come and we look forward to welcoming you all in ‘appropriate style’ this September! 9 Layth Hanbali - RUMS Vice-President Welfare Welcome to RUMS, your home for the foreseeable future! It is most likely that you will have an amazing time at university, but it’s natural to sometimes feel a lot of pressure, and I will be spending the year trying to make it as smooth as possible for you.

Throughout the year, there will be seminars to address a whole host of issues, including housing, finance, formative exam results (mock exams essentially), exam stress and summative exam results (THE exams) so keep an eye on the RUMS Bulletin in your inbox and the RUMS Facebook group. We will tackle taboos and get talking about the elephant in the room, bringing back Taboo Week. We will also engage with UCL Union’s Save the Health Centre campaign, which is trying to save the doctors’ practice on campus (Gower Place Practice) just round the corner from Huntley - make sure you’re registered there!

Jake Wilson - Sports VP Firstly, congratulations on securing a place and choosing to study at one of the world’s best medical schools! By being a medical student, not only are you part of UCL, you’re also privileged enough to be a member RUMS.

RUMS is the medical students community which you will be apart of for the next 6 years. As a medic, you have a very different life compared to your non-medic counterparts- your hours may be erratic and your teaching is spread around different parts of London. The sports and societies at RUMS are designed so you can take full advantage of them and not miss out due to your unique commitments.

You’ll find that many of the sports and societies offered at UCLU have a parallel in RUMS. You’d think that because the medics have fewer individuals, the standard would be lower, however you’d be very wrong! RUMS team frequently competes against UCL teams and often come out on top, some are even in higher leagues than their respective team. But it’s not just about competing at a high level- whatever your standard, even if you just want to try something new for fun, there’s a team that will be able to accommodate you.

Of course it’s not all about competing, throughout the year there’s numerous social events, tours and of course the best night of the week- sports night.

It’s no lie that medicine requires hard work and determination and, from experience, there’s no better way to have some down time, socialise and most importantly- have fun. My university experience has been shaped by my involvement in sports and societies and I would strongly encourage you to get involved too.

10 POSTS UP FOR ELECTION

RUMS executive has a number of sub-committees, including Education (Years 1 – 3 and Years 4 – 6), Events, and Welfare, chaired by their respective Vice-Presidents. If you would like to be involved in any of these, recruitment will begin soon so keep an eye on your inbox.

A few times a year, all medical students are invited to RUMS forums, which are the governing body of RUMS. We also have a general meeting (AGM) in term 2, where you can find out what your officers have been doing for you, and get important updates on what’s going on in RUMS and the Medical School.

RUMS also has an Honorary President – a member of staff nominated by students and voted on at the RUMS AGM. The aim of the role is to support RUMS students and the RUMS executive in representing the students’ best interests. The current honorary President is Dr Paul Dilworth, a member of Medical School staff and a constant pillar of support to RUMS executive as well as the RUMS sport teams and an invaluable member of RUMS.

11 THE MEDICAL SCHOOL EXPLAINED

It’s best to think of the Medical School as being based over three campuses: (the main UCL campus including University College Hospital), Hampstead (the Royal Free Hospital), and Archway (the ). In your first year, you will spend one morning per week at one of the campuses for Vertical Module (VM). In the second year, you rotate to one of the others. In the Years 4 – 6, you rotate around these and other sites for your various placements. Bloomsbury You spend all of years one and two here having lectures, workshops, tutorials and CALs (Computer Aided Learning sessions). The campus is vast and there are plenty of facilities for students to use. You can get more information on these in your UCLU Welcome pack. Conveniently, however, most of your teaching will occur in the Cruciform and Rockefeller Buildings (which are next to each other on Gower Street).

You’ll be introduced to The Huntley during the Welcome Festival, on the corner of Gower Street and Gower Place. We all look forward to seeing you there a lot of the time. Hampstead (Royal Free) In 1998 the Royal Free and University College medical schools merged to produce RUMS as it is today, and as the Royal Free was a medical school in its own right, there are plenty of facilities at the site. A new student common room is underway and there is also a recreational centre, which has a sports hall, pool and gym for you to use. The facilities offer discounted rates to medical students. The facilities offer discount rates to medical students and provide space for RUMS clubs to train when needed. Some facilities are also found here, like the Royal Free Library, and their 12 very own Squash Courts. Archway (Whittington) Teaching at Archway for Years 1 - 3 is in the Union and Furnival buildings across the road from the Whittington Hospital. “The Whit” is a friendly place and has a great reputation for teaching. If you have a chance to find the Cave, it’s a nice little hangout during VM. Important People in the Medical School The following people are important to you as you settle into your courses first year, so here’s a heads up:

Professor Sir John Tooke Professor Sir John Tooke is the Dean of UCL Medical School and UCL’s Vice-Provost (Health), having taken up the position at the beginning of 2010. He came to us from Peninsula Medical School, for which he was its Inaugural Dean and oversaw its establishment. Most famously, he lead the inquiry into Modernising Medical Careers, the new postgraduate training structures for doctors in the UK – leading to the publication of the Tooke Report. While at UCL, Sir John will be overseeing curriculum changes and the development of the new research facilities in the King’s Cross area. His vision for medical training is widely respected and his plans for UCLMS mean there are exciting times ahead.

Professor Professor Jane Dacre is Vice-Dean and Director of Education at UCL Medical School. She came to UCL from Bart’s Medical School having developed the first Clinical Skills Centre in the UK. Her background includes experience in the assessment of both Doctors and Medical Students. She currently works with the Royal College of Physicians on their membership where she previously held position of Academic Vice President. She also runs assessments for the General Medical Council and their Fitness to Practice. She has brought world class assessment methods to UCLMS to ensure you are the best doctors you can be, so while we don’t expect you to appreciate your exams, we are sure you’ll appreciate the end result!

13 Professor Michael Gilbey Professor Gilbey is in charge of Phase teaching (years 1 and 2), and he will also be teaching on the Circulation and Breathing Modules. After carefully reading the website, feel free to e-mail him if you have any questions.

Dr Brenda Cross Dr Cross is head of admissions, and you will probably recognise her from your interviews. She is also in charge of welfare in Phase 1, and is very welcoming to students with any problems. She has welfare surgeries and appointments can also be made to see her, so don’t hesitate to contact her if you need any help.

Carol Farguson Carol is in charge of administration of Years 1 – 3 and you will meet her and hear a lot from her in the introductory week of lectures. She is helpful and friendly, and any questions about admin or the various forms you are given should be directed to her.

14 SURVIVING THE YEAR

Books Don’t rush out and buy books just yet - you will inevitably buy some that you don’t need (and some are very expensive). Whilst one person may swear by one textbook, others may find it impossible to read, so you should borrow some from the library at the beginning (get these early, before the rush), and see if you like them and find them useful. The most popular books can also always be found on short loan (three hours) behind the desk in the library if you need to use them for reference and the other copies have all been taken out.

As a member of UCL and the Medical School you can borrow books from all UCL libraries and the hospital libraries at the Royal Free and the Whittington. When all the books are out in UCL, you can often find them in the hospital libraries. You can also renew books online. Finally, talk to your second-year ‘parents’ and people in the years above to ask their opinion about what is worth buying. They may even have some old books or notes that they are willing to lend you. We also have a regular bulletin with people selling books. You will receive these emails once you have enrolled with UCL.

Lockers You will need to get a locker in the Cruciform to store your lab coat, bag, and jacket when you are in the Dissection Room (DR) or in exams. You will be told how to pick up a locker key in the introductory sessions.

The UCL Health Centre Make sure you register at the Health Centre on Gower Place, just round the corner from The Huntley. Their large catchment area means most students can remain registered for the duration of their course, and international students can remain registered regardless where they live. It’s an invaluable service that you should definitely make use of.

Welfare Many students will need help at some stage during the course with something. If, at any time you want advice, please do not be shy in asking for help. UCLU can play a vital role here, supporting you when you need us. 15 We can offer support on issues such as: • Leaving familiar surroundings for university • Academic issues (study technique, workload etc.) • Personal Issues (social, family, sexual) • Funding

And many others, so please do not hesitate to get in touch. Layth Hanbali, your VP Welfare, is always available via email at [email protected]. It is important for you to know that committee members receive training in confidentiality, and your confidentiality will be maintained at all times.

RUMS Welfare will also be putting on various events during the year, including welfare drop-in sessions, exam de-stress events and post-results drop-ins. Look for details in the RUMS Bulletin in your e-mail, on the RUMS Facebook group and on posters in the Cruciform Building.

The Medical School also provides very valuable welfare and support services. There are daily walk-in surgeries at Drayton House, and the timetables for these are on the notice board there. You can also make appointments with Dr Cross at any time. She is understanding and helpful, so do take advantage of these services if you feel you need to.

Your VM/Personal Tutor is also someone who you can go to if you are having any problems, and they should meet with you individually some time over the year to discuss how things are going. They are another source of confidential advice and support whenever you need it. Other places to seek help include:

The Rights and Advice Centre [email protected] This is a free service for students at UCL, provided by UCLU. The centre can be found on the 1st floor of the Bloomsbury building on Gordon Street, and can be accessed for information and advice on any practical problem that you may be facing. The service is provided by professionally trained staff using up-to-the-minute information resources, and if they cannot give you an answer, they will find someone who can.

Feel free to email them, phone them (020 7679 2998), or visit in person (opening hours: 9.30-5, Monday to Friday).

Nightline An independent telephone service is available from 6pm-8am. Tel: 020 7631 0101

Quiet Contemplation Room A Quiet Room is available on the main UCL Campus, “Hut 34”, for individual prayer or reflection.

16 Chaplain to the Medical School An Anglican chaplain, the Reverend Charlotte Ballinger, is available to offer pastoral care to all students at the Medical School, regardless of religious belief.

The Chaplain’s office is located in the basement of the Medical School building, Room B31, which can be accessed through the Rockefeller building or via the entrance on Huntley Street.
