FOREWORD Gaudeamus igitur, Iuvenes dum sumus. “Let us rejoice, therefore, While we are young." (Academic Song) AUDEAMUS, the Journal of the Association of Young Researchers on Anglophone Studies (ASYRAS), is the culmination of the Association’s work. Since its G foundation twelve years ago, the publication of a journal had been a pending task in order to fulfil its goal as a means to promote the work of young scholars in English Studies. We are now happy to present this Volume 0, hopefully the first of many to come. GAUDEAMUS is named after the academic song and university anthem, Gaudeamus Igitur, representing the will of young postgraduate students to enjoy their first steps in academia while they start making a difference in a growingly demanding academic world. We are aware of how challenging the beginning of the academic career can be, just as challenging as seeing one’s early work published. That is why GAUDEAMUS appears as a journal where our young scholars can submit their work, helping them to get acquainted with the relevant process while maintaining the higher standards. Numerous thanks are in order. First, to the authors whose overwhelming response made the publication of this volume possible. Not only did we receive enough material to begin this project, but we even decided to launch it as a semi-annual journal, reserving some of the proposals for the upcoming Volume 1. The quality of the manuscripts was outstanding, demonstrating the 5 6 Foreword exceptional depth of the research carried out by our young scholars. We hope that they have learned and grown after experiencing the revising and publishing process, which is ultimately meant to highlight our best accomplishments and to improve and correct our possible mistakes. We cannot forget about the Editorial Team and their selfless effort. As soon as this project started, they tirelessly started working to make it a reality, providing valuable ideas and diligently carrying out their duties so that we could see this journal published in good time and in an appropriate manner. We must also thank both the members of the current Executive Board of ASYRAS and those of the previous one, with Sara, our former President, providing the starting push for this journal. Finally, we need to thank the members of our Scientific Committee, who kindly agreed to be of assistance in the revision of the original manuscripts, belonging to the different areas of English Studies. MAKING HERSTORY: A READING OF MILLER’S CIRCE AND ATWOOD’S PENELOPIAD Ester Díaz Morillo Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) his article is concerned with herstories and the retelling of myths. For the purpose of the present research, we will analyse Madeline Miller’s Circe and compare it to Margaret T Atwood’s The Penelopiad. North-American author Madeline Miller gives voice to goddess and sorceress Circe, protagonist of this book inhabited by other Homeric characters. For its part, The Penelopiad is a novella written by Canadian author Margaret Atwood in a series of rewritings of myths. In this book, based on the Homeric Odyssey, the focus is turned to Penelope, wife of Odysseus, who tells us her story from the Hades, as well as to her maids, hanged by Telemachus after Odysseus’s return. Both books are, therefore, related to Greek mythology and, more precisely, to Homer’s Odyssey. Both authors aim at retelling those myths through a female perspective, making use of herstory in order to do so. Analysing the novels from the perspective of feminism, we will see how the authors make their revisions of a canonical work in order to give voice to previously silenced voices in history how they present their female characters by calling myths into question, and, therefore, by challenging male authority and patriarchal society. Keywords: herstory; myths; women; Odyssey; feminism 9 10 Ester Díaz Morillo 1. Introduction A quick look at new book releases will let us see the allure mythology still has on us. In that sense, many are the writers who are nowadays aiming at rendering myths more inclusive by changing the perspective from which they are told. Among them we find two works, which are the subJect matter of the present research. Madeline Miller’s novel Circe and Margaret Atwood’s novella The Penelopiad are both focused on the rewriting of myths from the herstory perspective, which is the principal notion behind this research. By analysing the novels from the perspective of feminism, this paper seeks to examine the way in which these authors revise a canonical work with the primary purpose of allowing those who have been silenced throughout history to find their own voice by challenging the patriarchal society that gagged them for so long. After a theoretical introduction into the topic, we will examine how myths and, hence, patriarchal society are called into question by both authors and we will draw comparisons between the main characters in both writings, as well as between other female characters important to their respective plots. This analysis will allow us to see the many similarities found in these works, but also their points of divergence. 2. Theoretical Framework: Feminism and Herstory Women’s Studies and the notion of herstory have gained momentum especially since the 1970s, with the rise of feminist literary theory. Feminism has made the case for the importance of revisionism in literature and history. In the words of Adrienne Rich (1972, 19), “[w]e [females] need to know the writing of the past, and know it differently than we have ever known it; not to pass on a tradition but to break its hold over us.” As such, concepts as herstory have become paramount in this respect, since it is an “act of survival” (Rich 1972, 18) and “[w]oman must write her self:

Both are distinguished by using feminine features as political tools, and both have been an issue of interest for audiovisual productions. Each one is the main subject of two documentaries: Ukraine is not a Brothel, that concerns Femen movement; and Pray the Devil Back to Hell, that concerns Women of Liberia movement. I shall use this material in order to present each. After presenting them I will analyze them in light of the definition and division of feminism that Karen Offen, scholar of the University of California, does. I will then conclude that Femen is an example of what she calls ‘individualistic feminism’, and Women of Liberia an example of what she named ‘relational feminism’. I will also conclude that the political position they achieve is also due to the branch of feminism they represent. Alyokhina and Tolokonnikova had been in the slammer for almost two years for slamming President Putin in song at a Moscow cathedral and posting it online. Since their release by Putin, just before the Winter Olympics held in Sochi, they have spoken out about their experiences to journalists, appeared on television and were introduced onstage by Madonna in New York at Amnesty International’s Bring Human Rights Home concert. They topped it off by performing in protest just outside Olympic Park during the games. The band was in town to protest what they said was lack of freedom of speech and to record a new music video called "Putin Will Teach You To Love Your Country." And as they have become well accustomed, Pussy Riot members were attacked by security officials and beaten. www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivT-I-yxtdY Donning their traditional colorful ski masks, Pussy Riot was performing when they were pepper-sprayed by a Russian Cossack before other Cossacks jumped in, publicly flogging and unmasking them. One of the band's posse said that the Cossacks shouted at them, “You sold yourselves to the Americans!" A day earlier, band members had been detained and held for several hours at a police station nearby.

Sophie Payne i Representations of Contemporary Feminist Protest Abstract This thesis is situated within the increasing visibility of feminism in the public sphere in Germany and the UK. Case studies of three contemporary feminist groups, representing two forms of protest, comprise this study: FEMEN, an exclusive group who perform topless public protests across Europe; #aufschrei, an online anti-sexism campaign in Germany; and the Everyday Sexism Project, another online anti-sexism campaign in the UK which was a precursor to #aufschrei. I have selected texts from three different locations from the year 2013: self-representation online, including FEMEN’s reporting on their protests and the stories of sexism shared on the hashtag feminist groups’ websites; mainstream news media representation via online articles from four major newspapers per country, with a range of left and right-leaning and tabloid and broadsheet newspapers; and the discussion forum comments from these online news articles, which provide a view into more ‘general public’ discourse. The aim of this study is not to provide a comparison across countries or media types, but to explore the ways that feminist protest is represented in different locations: how is it constructed and legitimated by the groups themselves? How is it negotiated, supported or rejected in the news media and discussion forum comments? I work with a theoretical framework provided by Discourse Theory and linguistic analytical tools from CDA, namely, social actor theory and contextually constructed opposition.

  • Performing Protest: Femen, Nation, and the Marketing of Resistance
    PERFORMING PROTEST: FEMEN, NATION, AND THE MARKETING OF RESISTANCE Jessica Zychowicz Abstract The politics of the women’s protest group Femen, viewed as a media protest performance, reveal how the group has adapted the pop cultural staging of the Orange Revolution to their brand. Femen’s controversial topless methods have instantiated widespread debates around the diverse meanings of feminism both in Ukraine and among global audiences after the group’s move abroad in 2012. The findings in this article represent three years of ongoing research including original interviews, extensive analyses of blogs, news reports, photographs, and firsthand observations of activities by Femen and other feminist groups in Ukraine. By putting on display the dialectics of the commodification of female stereotypes, Femen’s performances expose the mechanisms in the mass media branding and marketing of protest. The controversial aesthetics of the group’s parodies illustrate the rhetorical limits at the intersection of local and global forms of civic expression. Femen has since gained notoriety worldwide for their controversial topless protests that once featured mostly street theatre, but now primarily consist of flash-mob performances circulated online. Members are mostly women in their twenties and thirties, the group lists twelve active members, and over four hundred non-active members on their website. Femen originally aimed to bring greater awareness to sex-tourism in Ukraine, though their performances now target a broad range of issues they define as patriarchal.

Abstract It is common knowledge that Trump admires dictators and lavishes praise on Putin who, as journalists counted, “he has discussed approvingly more than 80 times since 2013.” This includes gems such as “You have to give [Putin] credit that what he’s doing for that country in terms of their world prestige is very strong” and praising the Russian dictator’s “very strong control over [his] country.”1 This article offers a brief introduction into Trump’s dream – the authoritarian oppressive regime with a quasi-religious foundation, a hybrid of Communism and Christianity, that is ready to sacralise the leader and demon- ise his enemies, approve of any aggressions abroad or repressions within the country. Zusammenfassung Es ist allgemein bekannt, dass Trump Diktatoren bewundert und Putin so überschwäng- lich mit Lob bedenkt, so dass Journalisten zählen, „seit 2013 wurde er [Trump] mehr als 80 Mal anerkennend diskutiert.“ Dazu gehören Bonmots wie: „Man muss anerken- nen, dass das, was er [Putin] für dieses, sein Land tut in Bezug auf das Prestige in der Welt, ist sehr stark“ und das Lob auf den russischen Diktator angesichts der „sehr starken Kontrolle über [sein] Land.“ Dieser Artikel bietet eine kurze Einführung in Trumps Traum über das autoritäre, andere unterdrückenden Regime mit einer quasi- religiösen Grundlage, mit einer Mischung aus Kommunismus und Christentum, bereit, den Führer zu sakralisieren und seine Feinde zu dämonisieren, und jegliche Attacken im Ausland wie die Unterdrückung im Land zu billigen.

Men who’ve traveled abroad to find feminine women in traditional societies have also sometimes discovered the slow influx of feminism, and sometimes the appalling rise of feminist activism in those societies. One such example of feminist activism is that of FEMEN. Background FEMEN is a feminist protest group whose slogan is Sextremism. It was founded in Ukraine in 2008, and is now based in Paris. The organization became internationally known for organizing controversial topless protests (ranging from from public group urination to softcore street theatre) against “sex tourism,” religious institutions, sexism, homophobia and other social, national, and international topics. In October 2013 FEMEN had its largest membership in France, with international branches in Poland, Turkey, Israel, Brazil, Germany, the U.S., Canada, Switzerland, Italy, Bulgaria, and Tunisia. A Quebec- based FEMEN is also active, founded by Ukraine-born Xenia Chernyshova. In October 2012 the organization claimed it had about 40 activists in Ukraine, and another 100 who had joined their protests abroad, as well as twenty thousand supporters via the social network Vkontakte. It’s founder is supposedly Anna Hutsol, who was born in Russia but moved to Ukraine with her parents in 1991.
