ORGAN PRELUDE David Burnham

“Komm, heiliger Geist, Herre Gott” Dietrich Buxtehude “Come Holy Spirit, Lord God” WELCOME

CALL to WORSHIP Blessed be the holy Trinity, ☩ one God, the fountain of living water, the rock who gave us birth, our light and our salvation. Amen. Let us come into the light, the revealing and healing light of God. Silence is kept for reflection. God of grace and glory, you have brought us through the night of sin into the light of Jesus’ resurrection. Yet our lives are still shadowed by sin. Make us alive in Christ, O God. Make us new as you make all things new. Rescue us from evil and the gloom of sin, renew us in grace, and restore us to living in your holiness, through Jesus Christ, our risen Lord. Amen. Rejoice with all creation around God’s throne! The light of the risen Christ puts to flight all evil deeds, washes away sin, restores innocence to the fallen, casts out hate, brings peace, and humbles earthly pride. Jesus Christ loves you and ☩ frees you from your sins by his blood. To him be glory and dominion forever and ever! Amen.

3 HYMN OF PRAISE 395

“Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord” Komm HeiligerGeist, Herre Gott GREETING The grace of our lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

4 PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray: God our creator, the resurrection of your Son offers life to all the peoples of earth. By your Holy Spirit, kindle in us the fire of your love, empowering our lives for service and our tongues for praise, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

THE FIRST READING: ACTS 2: 1-21 1When the day of Pentecost had come, [the apostles] were all together in one place. 2And sudden- ly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. 3Divided tongues, as of fire, appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. 4All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other lan- guages, as the Spirit gave them ability. 5Now there were devout Jews from every nation under heaven living in Jerusalem. 6And at this sound the crowd gathered and was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the na- tive language of each. 7Amazed and astonished, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking Galileans? 8And how is it that we hear, each of us, in our own native language? 9Parthians, Medes, Elamites, and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, 10Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene, and visitors from Rome, both Jews and proselytes, 11Cretans and Arabs—in our own languages we hear them speaking about God’s deeds of power.” 12All were amazed and perplexed, saying to one another, “What does this mean?” 13But others sneered and said, “They are filled with new wine.” 14But Peter, standing with the eleven, raised his voice and addressed them, “Men of Judea and all who live in Jerusalem, let this be known to you, and listen to what I say. 15Indeed, these are not drunk, as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning. 16No, this is what was spo- ken through the prophet Joel: 17‘In the last days it will be, God declares, that I will pour out my Spirit upon all flesh, and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams. 18Even upon my slaves, both men and women, in those days I will pour out my Spirit; and they shall prophesy. 19And I will show portents in the heaven above and signs on the earth below, blood, and fire, and smoky mist. 20The sun shall be turned to darkness and the moon to blood, before the coming of the Lord’s great and glorious day. 21Then everyone who calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.’ ”

The Lesson Ends: Lector: The Word of the Lord Congregation: Thanks be to God

5 THE PSALM: Psalm 104:24-34, 35b Chanted Responsively

24 How manifold are your | works, O LORD! In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full | of your creatures. 25Yonder is the sea, great and wide, with its swarms too man- | y to number, living things both | small and great. 26There go the ships | to and fro, and Leviathan, which you made for the | sport of it. 27All of them | look to you to give them their food | in due season. 28You give it to them; they | gather it; you open your hand, and they are filled | with good things. 29When you hide your face, | they are terrified; when you take away their breath, they die and return | to their dust. 30You send forth your Spirit, and they | are created; and so you renew the face | of the earth. 31 May the glory of the LORD en- | dure forever; O LORD, rejoice in | all your works. 32You look at the earth | and it trembles; you touch the mountains | and they smoke. 33 I will sing to the LORD as long | as I live; I will praise my God while I | have my being. 34May these words of | mine please God. I will rejoice | in the LORD. 35b Bless the LORD, | O my soul. Hal- | lelujah!

THE SECOND READING: Romans 8:14-17

14For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

The Lesson Ends: Lector: The Word of the Lord Congregation: Thanks be to God

6 GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

GOSPEL: John 14: 8-17 (25-27) The gospel is announced. The holy gospel according to Saint John the fourteenth chapter.

Congregation: Glory to you, O Lord.

8Philip said to [Jesus,] “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” 9Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. 12Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it. 15“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. 17This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. [ 25“I have said these things to you while I am still with you. 26But the Advocate, the Holy Spir- it, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. 27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.”]

The gospel concludes: The gospel of the Lord. Congregation: Praise to you, O Christ. CHILDREN’S SERMON 9 am SERMON Pastor Jeff Johnson

HYMN OF THE DAY 577 “Creator Spirit, Heavenly Dove” Veni Creator Spiritus

7 APOSTLES CREED 7:45 AM I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. AFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM/CONFIRMATION Ashley Burke and Manuel Robinson have been instructed in the Christian faith and Lutheran traditions. They now present themselves to make a public affirmation of their baptism.

Let us pray. Merciful God, we thank you for this sister and brother, whom you have made your own by wa- ter and the Word in baptism. You have called them to yourself, enlightened them with the gifts of your Spirit, and nourished them in the community of faith. Uphold your servants in the gifts and promises of baptism, and unite the hearts of all whom you have brought to new birth. We ask this in the name of Christ. Amen.

The presiding minister addresses those making public affirmation of baptism. The assembly may join in the responses.

People of God, I ask you to profess your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church.

Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God? Response: I renounce them.

8 Do you renounce the powers of this world that rebel against God? Response: I renounce them.

Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God? Response: I renounce them.

The presiding minister addresses the assembly.

Do you believe in God the Father?

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?

I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit?

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen The presiding minister addresses those making public affirmation of baptism.

You have made public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in holy baptism: to live among God's faithful people, to hear the word of God and share in the Lord's supper, to proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed, to serve all people, following the example of Jesus, and to strive for justice and peace in all the earth? Response: (separately) I do, and I ask God to help and guide me. 9 The minister addresses the assembly. People of God, do you promise to support those who are making public affirmation of their baptism, and to pray for them in their life in Christ?

We do, and we ask God to help and guide us.

The presiding minister prays for those making affirmation of baptism.

Let us pray. We give you thanks, O God, that through water and the Holy Spirit you give us new birth, cleanse us from sin, and raise us to eternal life. The presiding minister continues with a reading of a confirmation verse and laying both hands on the head of each person making affirmation of baptism saying:

Father in heaven, for Jesus’ sake, stir up in Ashley the gift of your Holy Spirit; confirm her faith, guide her life, empower her in His serving, give her patience in suffering, and bring her to ever- lasting life. Amen.

Father in heaven, for Jesus’ sake, stir up in Manuel the gift of your Holy Spirit; confirm his faith, guide him life, empower her in His serving, give him patience in suffering, and bring him to everlasting life. Amen.

The congregation stands Let us rejoice with these servants in Christ.

We rejoice with you in the life of baptism. Together we will give thanks and praise to God and proclaim the good news to all the world. (the congregation offers further affirmation with applause)

PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION Rooted in the abundant life and love of Christ Jesus, we pray for the life of the church, the lives of people in need, and the life of all creation. A brief silence. O God, move among your people and send forth your Spirit to make your church a holy place where people find welcome, Christ’s compassion, and new life. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Send forth your Spirit to renew the earth in the wake of storms, earthquakes, or human misuse. Breathe life into every mountain and valley, stream and ocean. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Send forth your Spirit to unite all nations in caring for those who are vulnerable or in need. Help us to put aside our differences and to seek your will. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great.

10 Send forth your Spirit to aid people in distress (especially). Sweep them up in the movement of your Spirit, and fulfill your everlasting promises for all. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Send forth your Spirit to knock down barriers that prevent people from receiving your good news. Guide interpreters and cultural ambassadors who open lines of communication. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. Send forth your Spirit to unite us with the saints of every time and place. By the gifts of your Spirit, rouse us to deeds of mercy and words of kindness. Hear us, O God. Your mercy is great. We deliver all this into your care, O God, trusting in the work of your Holy Spirit to bring all things into the risen life of Christ our Lord. Amen.

Fulfilling the promise of the resurrection, you pour out the fire of your Spirit, uniting in one body people of every nation and tongue. And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection, with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn: HOLY, HOLY, HOLY

12 THANKSGIVING AT THE TABLE Blessed are you, O God of the universe. Your mercy is everlasting and your faithfulness endures from age to age.

Praise to you for creating the heavens and the earth. Praise to you for saving the earth from the waters of the flood. Praise to you for bringing the Israelites safely through the sea. Praise to you for leading your people through the wilderness to the land of milk and honey. Praise to you for the words and deeds of Jesus, your anointed one. Praise to you for the death and resurrection of Christ. Praise to you for your Spirit poured out on all nations.

In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

With this bread and cup we remember our Lord's passover from death to life as we proclaim the mystery of faith: MEMORIAL ACCLAMATION

Small private Christian non-profit preschool search- ing for a preschool teacher to work Monday through Friday mornings 8:30-1:30. We are a school year program running a half-day preschool and lunch program from September through June serving Brockton and surrounding communities. We offer Professional Development, personal and sick days and paid school vacations. We an equal opportunity employer. If you are interested in applying for the position please send a resume to [email protected] or call 508-587-8032 and leave a message.

COFFEE & DONUTS: On the table in the Hallway is a sponsorship form for the weekly coffee and donuts. We need sponsors to cover the cost of coffee, cream and donuts on a weekly basis. The proceeds that you put in the basket each week goes to camperships for our youth to attend Camp Calumet and not to pay for the coffee and donuts. Your generosity is appreciated.

Church Library: For many years we have had a church library that has from time to time been located in various parts of the building, most recently in the Youth Room on the lower level. As times have changed the library has not and most of the books are seriously outdated many dating from the 1940s thru the early 1970s. At its April meeting the Council voted unanimously on the recommendation of Pastor Jeff and Jim Benson that we dispose of the library at this time due to its out datedness and resources being available through new technology. We invite members of the congregation to look through the collection and take whatever books may be of interest to them. Emmanuel House Residence will be invited to take any they wish to have, we will have others available for food pantry clients to take and the remainder will be donated to a book recycling program.

This coming Saturday more than a dozen of our young people will travel to Boston with pastor Jeff to participate in the Episcopal Diocese Aco- lyte Festival. At the festival acolyte teams of all ages will participate in workshops, a shared meal and a festival Eucharist. They will meet other acolytes and worship leaders from around eastern Massachusetts, grow deeper into the role of acolyte and take in a festive procession featuring crosses, banners, torches, flags and streamers from the many participating parishes. This should be a wonderful experience at one of Boston’s most historic church buildings. Many are familiar with the bells of the church as they ring as part of the Boston Pops performance of the 1812 Overture on the fourth of July.

This organization publishes an online newspaper and provides broadcast- ing services as well on internet radio and via podcasts. On Tuesday night Pastor Jeff and Jim Benson presented the information to Council and Council after discussion, including a phone conversation with one of the partners unanimously approved a “pilot” broadcast of today’s service. Further, the Witness Commission will review the recording at their meeting on Monday night and if happy with the results have the permis- sion of the Council to move ahead with regular broadcasts. The council chose the time of the broadcast to be each Sunday afternoon at 4 pm, after this the recording will be kept and availa- ble as a podcast thru the Spark Networks website. This is totally internet based and will not be on traditional AM/FM radio. If the decision is made to move forward we will provide you through bulletins, Tidings, our website and Facebook page how to access the broadcast.

One change to our service that will in all likelihood change is that only first names of people on our prayer list will be read to protect their privacy due to the worldwide access to our worship service. The names in the bulletin will not be affected.

As they say in broadcasting “stay tuned”!
