Golden Age Club At the beginning of June many members went on a coach trip to Stratford-on-Avon which was considered to be both successful and enjoyable. There were various ways to spend the day and just to wander around Stratford with its history and old buildings proved very interesting. There were numerous small independent shops for the "shopaholics" to visit and a choice of cafes and restaurants for those wanting refreshments. Lunch could also be had at the Garrick Inn, a traditional black and white pub and, dating back to the 15th century, said to be the oldest in Stratford.

There was also the opportunity to ride on the Tour Bus which visited Mary Arden's Farm - Mary being the mother of Shakespeare - Shakespeare's birthplace and Ann Hathaway's Cottage. Some members took a one hour boat trip down the River Avon.

Later in June, Charlotte from Wiltshire Farm Foods brought to our meeting an appe- tising selection of meals for members to taste so that they could choose their favour- ites and place an order if they so wished. Several members took advantage of this.

Deliveries are made to the Quedgeley area every Thursday morning between 8.00 a.m. and 10.00 a.m. Meals include vegetarian, gluten-free and those for special diets. Wiltshire Farm \foods work very closely with the NHS. Dishes can be chosen from a large selection of main meals and desserts - too numerous to mention indi- vidually as there are over 300. Everyone was able to take advantage of the tasters and it was agreed that they were delicious.

For more information W.F.F. can be contacted by telephone on 01793 751 176 or online at www.wiltshirefarmfoods.com.

The Club meets on the first and third Tuesday of each month (except August) at Quedgeley Village Hall. Further details from Laura Tremble on 01452 690976 (mo- bile 07774200191) or Sue Lovell on 01452 724620.

NEWS FROM QUEDGELEY WANDERERS

Excitement is growing at Waterwells as the new football season approaches. The Club has accepted an invitation from the Gloucestershire County Football League to join with immediate effect.

This represents a huge leap forward and is a recognition of the hard work that many people have put in during the first 25 years since Quedgeley Wanderers was found- ed.

The First Team finished the season strongly and look forward to taking their place in Step 7 of the National Football League Pyramid.

The Reserve team will also be looking to build on last season’s success…..pro- motion to Stroud League Division 1 and finalists in the Stroud League Chairman’s Cup…. with more strong performances.

Despite some setbacks along the way, the Third Team finished the season in good spirits and with real hopes of being a force in Division 4.

Space prevents all of the teams getting a mention here but current information and news is always available on the website.

The teams and players that take part for Quedgeley Wanderers are all encouraged to play at the best level possible and enjoy the experience. From the very youngest to the most senior participant we value every single one of Club members and look forward to another season filled with great memories.

Finally, we would like to thank everyone that supports and provides sponsorship throughout the Club. We look forward to seeing you all soon and hope that Quedge- ley Wanderers will make you proud of the Town’s premier Football Club.

Royal British Legion

At the end of May and beginning of June Branch members of Hardwicke RBL along with other Branches went to the Annual 100km walk around the Ypres Salient in Belgium. Despite the very hot three days the managed they walk without too many blisters. The Branch Chairman laid a wreath at the Belgian War Memorial on the Friday evening and Lydbrook Chairman laid a wreath at the Menin Gate. Again the combined efforts of three Branches, we were one of the biggest foreign teams taking part.

At the Branch meeting in June we had a talk about the National Arboretum and the work that goes on there.

The Branch Standard and several members attended the Royal British Legion Re- dedication service at Gloucester Cathedral on 23rd June.

Saturday 29th June Armed Forces Day dawned bright and sunny for the event held in the City. The Docks looked great with most military charities stalls, a Spitfire en- gine and cockpit which was found in France and belonged to the Commander of Polish 303 Squadron based at RAF Northolt, Armoured Personnel Carrier and other military vehicles. The parade from the Cathedral was led by the band of the Royal Marines, members of ARRF from Imjin Barracks, all three cadet services, the Military Preparation College and Veterans of varying Vintage. They were well received by the huge crowds lining Westgate/Southgate Street. Hardwicke were proud to be well represented at the event.

The next Branch meeting will be on August 14th when we will have a talk on "WW1 K Boats" which were steam propelled submarines, so called K Boats by those who served in them because K stood for "Kalamity".

The Tuesday Club in July will be our 13th Birthday! Where have the years gone?

Page 13 Quedgeley News is produced and distributed by volunteers Reverend Canon Fr John F. Ward The New Rectory St. James Close School Lane Quedgeley Gloucester GL2 4PN 01452-720411 07967 636094 [email protected] Dear Parishioners & Friends,

I would like to say a huge thanks to all those who supported us at our Summer Fayre. Whether you volunteered to help on the day, provided raffle prizes or came to buy, you made the fayre a big success. Unfortunately, due to weather conditions we couldn’t hold it in the church yard but never the less we managed to raise £3,000; greatly needed for the church in our parish.

Also I’d like to thank to Mr Richard Atkins, BBC Radio Gloucestershire broadcaster for kindly opening the fayre for us.

With all the activities that have been going on in the church over the previous months it is hardly surprising that our volunteers who run the weekly groups Chit Chat and Chatterbox are taking August off for a well-earned break. Both groups will resume in September.

I know many of you will also be taking holidays during August, the schools close and some work places close down for a week or two. It is important that we take holi- days - rest and relaxation help to recharge our batteries and prepare us for the year ahead. In the opening passages of the Genesis in the bible, we are told that God created the world in six days and on the seventh he rested!

Jesus was well aware of the need for rest and there are many occasions in the New Testament when he saw how weary and tired his disciples had become (Mark 6: 31). He himself fell asleep during one of their excursions out in a boat on the lake (Mark 4 35).

Page 14 Quedgeley News : YOUR local FREE community magazine, putting its profits back into the community So I wish you all a very good holiday and even if you aren’t experiencing a change of scenery - perhaps you are doing a spot of decorating or gardening at home? The old saying ‘A change is as good as a rest’ can still apply to you. Enjoy!

With every blessing

Kingsway Primary School Tel: 01452 881800 Email: [email protected] Website: www.kingswayprimary.org.uk

Dear Readers, As we end this academic year, which was full of surprises, Kingsway Primary School Team has strived to progress forwards and upwards taking on the challenges that lay ahead with gusto, in order to provide the best possible learning environment for the children: To encourage them to learn and challenge themselves and to become the best they can be.

But before we say ‘have a great summer’ and wish all the Year 6 children all the very best of luck in secondary school, let’s have a quick look back at what an amazing year 2018/2019 has been at Kingsway Primary School. Here are just a few snippets of what the children have been up to:

October – We celebrated ‘The Mental Health Champions Award for Gloucestershire’. This award was created to acknowledge the high quality provision that some schools make to support the mental health and wellbeing of their school community.

November - Our Remembrance Assembly was led by Peregrine and Eagle class (Year 6). The thoughts, words and prayers plus the songs were a beautiful tribute and a reminder of those Forces families in our community which our school serves.

December – Kingfisher and Swan had a troublesome time when they couldn’t do any colouring. All the crayons had quit! They did, however, make some inspiring colours with natural resources. I heard later that the crayons did come back.

January – Our Young Voices choir brought together friends and families, sharing in wonderful music and celebrating singing culminating in a concert at the NEC.

February - The school became the proud owners of a new building, the Forest School Shelter which has been a fantastic place to learn and enjoy the great outdoors. We thank SoKS for their contribution.

March/April – We celebrated with yet another award, the Gloucestershire Healthy Living & Learning Healthy Schools Award. This is another great achievement for the school. Whole School World Book Day was spent with the children sharing stories with friends and family. It was lovely to see so many parents/carers reading with the children.

May – We saw year 5 mummifying tomatoes, whatever next! Then there were some fantastic sporting achievements from Year 5 who attended the GSSN mountain bik- ing competition and Mr Lane finishing 3rd in the Teachers race!!

Page 20 All the adverts are on our website for a whole year

June – We congratulated Year 3 and two pupils, who were awarded 2 distinctions from the National Primary/ Secondary Engineering Challenge 2019 from nearly 3500 entries in SW alone. The successful candidates were Eloise Maggs and Alfie Hancock, both from Merlin Class. UWE displayed their designs at an open day in June. What a great achievement. So here we are in July – School Development of Writing The children have written great stories in every class which are adorning the walls of the school showing off their creations. Whilst working with the English Lead, twenty children from Years 5 and 6 were chosen to take part in a writing workshop and some brilliant pieces were created which are now on display in the front entrance to the school. It’s lovely to see such success

The Head’s office has been flooded with visitors from across the school: children with beaming smiles sharing their achievements in all areas of the curriculum. On arrival, these children have their photos taken to be shown in assembly on Friday. This week, we were able to celebrate: great independent artwork completed at home; a truly incredible story; an exceptional improvement in attitude to work; two wonderful pieces of geography. I look forward to see the children in September and hearing all about their adventures over the summer.

From all the staff at KPS have a fabulous summer break.

Beech Green Primary School “Believe Grow Persevere Succeed” Dear Readers,

Beech Green children learn lifesaving skills

We have been working with the organisation CPR4Schools. This organisation was born out of the desire to empower the next generation in the skills needed to save a life. The team trains children in what an emergency is and dependant on their age how to do CPR (Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation.)

The younger children at Beech Green have been taught how to call for help, fun bandaging activities and a simple introduction about what CPR is. KS2 children have been taught how to carry out CPR on mannequins and emergency procedures such as the recovery position, choking and how to call for help.

These sessions are run by registered healthcare professionals who are currently working in the NHS such as doctors, emergency nurse practitioners and paramed- ics, all of whom specialise in life support and give their time free, to provide this life saving training.

We had an amazing day with the CPR4Schools team. The children and staff all learnt vital life saving skills and had fun too. Maria, the team leader, said “I would like to say thank you for having CPRforLife and some of the CPR4School instructors visit your wonderful school on Wednesday. We met such friendly and well-behaved children. They participated in the sessions so well and we were all impressed with their questions, interest and abilities!”

Inspired by this training, we are now fund raising to buy a defibrillator for our school.

Quedgeley Town Council News

GOLD!!! Your local council has been awarded Gold Status for the Local Council Award Scheme. The Quality Gold Award demonstrates that a council is at the forefront of best practice and achieves excellence in governance, community leadership and council devel- opment. Quality Gold councils seek to provide leader- ship for their communities, bring people together, have excellent business planning processes, ensure value for money as well as constantly seeking new innovations and opportunities to improve. They highlight the very best we, as a sector, can achieve for our communities. This award isn't given out lightly and we are proud to have achieved this. The Na- tional Association of Local Councils issue this award and Quedgeley is the 6th coun- cil in Gloucestershire to have received this out of approximately 243 councils. The accreditation day involved a panel of judges visiting Quedgeley and being shown around key venues available to the community, such as the community centres, play parks, sports centres, cemetery, allotments etc. Meeting them were Chair, Graham Smith, Vice Chair, Steve Smith, Cllr Jan McAllan, Cllr Greg Williams and Town Clerk, Jacquie Webster. This award remains valid for 4 years during which time the council must ensure that the level achieved by so much hard work is not only maintained but improved upon. Chair Graham Smith said “I’m proud to be Chair to such a proac- tive council. We all work so hard with our community at the forefront of our minds. Well done to everyone involved”. Town Clerk said “I’m really proud of my council. They’ve really stepped up in trying to be more visible to the community and provide a professional outlook. There is still much to do but the council are proactive and are ready to achieve even more”. The summer months see a flurry of events taking place in Quedgeley which we hope, between all of them you managed to get to one. Thank you to everyone who came along to support our annual dog show, especially as due to previ- ous bad weather we had to very quickly reschedule the venue to the Sports Pavilion in Kingsway. In the end the venue proved better that expected, with high numbers of visitors, fantastic weather and a real feel good factor all round. There were plenty of pooches on show with lots of prizes won. A hard show to judge but managed very well. Well done to Cllr Jan McAllan for organising the event. Plans are already in place for next year and it looks as though it will be held at the Pavilion once again.

Page 30 Visit Quedgeley News on Facebook Also, at the Pavilion recently we had Danter’s Fun Fair which is always a popular event. Held over a long weekend, again with good weather, we hope you enjoyed the central location to this Fair. Now onto something a bit more serious. We have received numerous complaints regarding dogs off leads. Can we please remind you that dogs should always be on leads, not just for the welfare of others but for your dogs too. Help if we Can The 6th Concert organised by Help if we Can was held at Severn Vale School (by kind permission and the superb support of Andy Oldham) and was very well at- tended.

Featuring music by the Gloucester Excelsior Band under the baton of Sam Mills, popular and traditional music was played in both halves. The Spakuleles, the best ukulele band in the county (quote Mayor of ) also played great and comical pieces with their band of 14 players. Angies Community Choir under the leadership of Kay Mason sang several pieces and Kay then accompanied Pam Westwood with her solos. The Susan Tomlins Schools of Dance as always were brilliant with both solo and group dancers. Dad's Army featured with 5 members of Help if we Can doing a rifle drill not very well! The Stroud Valley Guides looked after the refreshments.

The evening which was attended by the Mayors of Cheltenham, Gloucester and the Chairman of Quedgeley Town Council finished with a short Act of Remembrance where 3 stalwarts of the Group who had recently passed on were remembered and the Last Post played. Everyone joined in the singing of Land of Hope and Glory and the National Anthem.

Steve Smith - Chairman Marvellous evening, grateful thanks to all those who attended or helped in some way

Recently our county became one of the very few where all our NHS Trusts are rated good. And the winter pressures were dealt with better than they have been in years.

So, I was delighted to put forward some of our best NHS teams for the NHS Par- liamentary Awards. Three of them have won regional awards and gone through to the final next week. Many congratulations to Zaheera Nanabawa Primary Care Workforce; Angela Willan Physical Health Facilitator 2gether Trust; Katie Tucker of Treasure Seekers Westgate St. You’re all star teams innovating to improve health outcomes for all.

Also, good news for the many of you who work and would like to achieve the dream of home ownership. New figures show that housebuilding has reached an 11-year high, as the government has committed to helping more families onto the housing ladder. The government has cut stamp duty for 95% of first-time buyers, and is in- vesting £44 billion to deliver on average 300,000 homes per year by mid 2020s.

The announcement of increased funding from the UK’s five major gambling compa- nies is a welcome step towards addressing gambling related harm. In the spirit of my 10 Minute Rule Bill, this will raise money for the desperately needed research on what can and should be done to protect the young and most vulnerable.

THE Howard Hughes v G. J. Working in the London Borough of Sutton Health & Family Service`s in the early 70s setting up a new `Health Promotion Department. My role amongst other things was to produce teaching aids on Health Issues, in the form of Audio Slide programmes, Short Trigger films, Posters and Major Exhibitions. As well as servicing all Audio/ Visual Equipment,it was also my job to run courses for staff from the Health Service, Local Authority and Education on presentation and use of A/V Equipment.

In the early 70`s Doug Cluet Chief Librarian in Sutton came to me, to ask if I would show the film `Hells Angels`at Carshalton Village Hall on a Saturday night, which apparently had references to Croydon Airport where `Amy Johnson` took off. It was produced by the Famous Multi Millionaire Howard Hughes who also featured in it.

I suggested that his staff were trained to show film, but NO Graham this is a very special film the only one in 16mm that is in a condition for projecting. It was being flown from America to an air base in the north of England from which it is being sent down to be available to us for showing on the Saturday to be returned to the air base on the Sunday.

Publicity went out in the local press for a 6pm show, demand followed, so I was asked if I could do another late evening, which I agreed for 8.30pm. Days later Doug came to me and said there was a problem, it had been suggested by the press that `Howard Hughes’ was in London (When he did come to London he and his body guards completely took over one of the top hotels. it had been denied he was in London) but Doug told me that he had received a letter stating the follow- ing. That it had come to notice we were showing this film and it was NOT to be shown but to be returned to him by arrangement and would be destoyed. If the showing went on the projectionist and the authority would be sued for damages. My reply was that I had no money, what did the legal people think. Doug said they had taken advice and with all this publicity could we do a showing on Sunday to fin- ish at 12noon for the film to be picked up by courier.

To packed audiences having set the first three films on three 16 mm projectors side by side focussed on the screen, I had no proper change over system so as the first 20 min reel was coming to the end, with hands on two projectors when a large dot appeared on the right of the screen, time to run the next projector then as a second dot appeared switch on light and turn off the first film and prepare to load the fourth reel. Total of 6 twenty minute reels completed the show and with just a couple of film breaks I had to repair because of the age of the film, I think we did well.

We heard no more from Howard Hughes who died sometime later. But not many people can say they have been threatend to be sued by Howard Hughes. Sadly all my news paper cuttings with several house moves, have been accidently destroyed.

Page 45 Vendors and landlords across the UK have voted for the Estate Agents they feel give the best service and leading local agent, The Property Centre, has won triple Gold.

Not only was the Company voted the UK’s Best Regional Estate Agency, but it won Gold for being the Best Sales and Lettings Agent in Worcestershire too!

“The ESTAS are all about customer service and as a company, we pride ourselves on being the best at what we do,” said Steve Jones, Founding Partner of The Prop- erty Centre. “We listen to our customers, to their individual needs, and we design services which are specifically tailored around them. Our highly experienced teams strive to make the whole process as easy and straight-forward as possible – whether that’s letting and managing an investment property, selling the family home or buy- ing for the first time.”

The Property Centre currently has 8 branches across Gloucester, Cheltenham, Stroud and Worcester, and is expanding this year, with a 2nd Worcester branch due to open in Autumn 2019.

“Winning these awards is testament not just to the hard work all our teams put in, consistently going above and beyond for our customers, but also to the trust our customers have in us.

Any agent can go out there and say that they’re the best, but to be actually rec- ognised by the ESTAS, the leading Estate Agency Awards body in the UK, and to have been proven to be the best, that speaks for itself and gives our customers the sure knowledge they’re getting the best, for their investments, their homes and their families.”
